Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Educational Sociology As sociologists have succeeded in delimiting their own field of labor they have reached a fair consensus of opinion concerning the basis of all sociological study. The point of departure in such study is the social group, whether the group be large or small, temporary or permanent, simple or complex. It is therefore the social group as an educational unit upon which we must build an educational sociology. The books that have hitherto appeared, however, have regarded rather the organization and betterment of. School and college through a study of the applications of sociology to edu cation than the information and training of the students themselves who read the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Sociology With Educational Applications In my class every student works on some group or institution with which he is familiar his practice class, if he has one, or his boarding Club, literary society, church, family, neighborhood. As we advance through the principles Of sociology he applies them to his own special group and writes a sociological analysis Of it by instalments. In this way sociological theory comes to him as an instrument for practical use rather than as a body Of doctrine for the delectation of scholars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Heredity: A Study in Sociology In this posthumous work I have taken the liberty of inserting many marks of quotation, which no doubt would have been added upon revision if the untimely death of the lamented author had not intervened. I must express my obligations to all who have assisted me while engaged upon this translation. I am glad of this opportunity of expressing my indebtedness to M. Alfred Fouillee for his extreme courtesy to a complete stranger, and for the trouble he has taken to explain such difficulties as I have from time to time referred to him for solution. In particular, I have to acknowledge the advice and unfailing sympathy received from my friend Mr. G. F. Stout, whose ungrudging assistance has been invaluable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in Recent Sociology: A Series of Seven Reprints From Education, March to December, 1921, Indicating the Contributions of Sociologists to the Science of Education Chapter III. A search for the means of social progress is the task undertaken by Todd. In a lengthy definition, progress is seen to be a complex of many factors, all centering about human well-being as their aim. A prerequisite consideration in any program of progress is the character of human nature, that is, of the self. Fortunately, human nature is found to be plastic and adaptable, rich in variety and possi bility. One has many possible selves; which of them shall dominate is mainly a matter of the social environment. A type of personality which is not exploitive, nor even adaptive, but contributive, is essential to progress. It will be secured only by a comprehensive system of social education, which is therefore the means to progress. Page 21. Chapter IV. Ellwood writes from the viewpoint of social psychology. The social life is essentially psychic and sociology is essentially a psychic science. Social life is therefore to be interpreted in such terms as instinct, acquired habit, mental attitude, suggestion, values, senti ment, ideas, emotion, intelligence. It is likewise such psychic data with which education is concerned. In fact, the human social process itself is essentially an educative process, a consideration which is basal to the construction of an educational sociology. Education is found to be the ultimate method of social organization and of social progress. Good citizenship requires that the social studies be central in the school. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1932 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. What this book tells is what every teacher knows, that the world of school is a social world. Those human beings who live together in the school, though deeply severed in one sense, nevertheless spin a tangled web of interrelationships; that web and the people in it make up the social world of school. It is not a wide world, but, for those who know it, it is a world compact with meaning. It is a unique world. It is the purpose of this book to explore it. This work is a study of the life of human beings in the school. The point of view of the analysis is primarily sociological. The work is, in one sense, a systematic application of the concepts of sociology and social psychology to the social phenomena of school life. The chief utility of the book, probably, will be as a textbook in Educational Sociology, but I hope that it may have some general interest as well. I have tried, indeed, to write such a book as would appeal to every teacher everywhere. The method that has been employed in gathering and interpreting material is empirical and observational. The style is as non-technical as it was possible to make it without the loss of essential meanings. The purpose of the book, however it is used, is to give insight into concrete situations typical of the typical school. I have hewed to this line, and to no other. Whatever seemed likely to give insight has been included, and all else, however worth while in other respects, has been excluded. This classic work on the sociology of school life remains a much cited work to this day.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civic Education: Sociological Foundations and Courses Hundreds, probably thousands, of the teachers and others interested in schools are now wrestling with the problems of civic education. They believe that our country' needs more and better education for citizenship than it is now getting. It appears to them that our public and private schools, both higher and lower, have thus far made but partial and insufficient contributions toward the civic knowledge and idealism that our country, with its complex economic and political life, certainly needs. These schools do achieve much in general education; but of purposive civic education they give little, and that little is too often made futile by its formalism or wasted by its puerility. America needs more and better education for citizenship - to that proposition all will give ready assent. Many commissions are studying ways and means of civic and other forms of social education. Special efforts are being made everywhere in teacher-training institutions to inspire and equip regular or special teachers for this difficult work. Philanthropy finances the "scouting education" of the Boy Scout movement in large part because of its promising contributions to good citizenship. The exactions of the war and the economic perturbations consequent on the war have forced us to see that our political institutions, serviceable as they have become, are not fully equal to the social loads they must carry. Hence the current varied and intense aspirations for more extended and more scientific civic education in schools, especially those that claim our children from their twelfth to their eighteenth years. Statesmen and other students of social life are insistent in their demands. Progressive educators are generally awake to the need. The historical and practical questions which are there sketched arise whenever an endeavour is made to relate education to social life. There are many people for whom social betterment has a powerful fascination. They respond to its claims with conspicuous enthusiasm. But if account be taken of the time and energy which social benefactors spend, and also of the net results of their labours, it must be frankly confessed that disappointment is often experienced by most of them. They attempt much, but little is accomplished. Why is the rate of social progress so slow? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
