Engaging with ELMA through the work of Hannah Arendt enables these issues of power to be directly confronted. Arendt produced texts that challenged notions of freedom and politics, and notably examined the lives of people, ideas and historical events in ways that are pertinent to the purposes and practices of education. Book excerpt: This book gathers some of Hannah Arendt’s core themes and focuses them on the question, ‘What is education for?’ For Arendt, as for Aristotle, education is the means whereby we achieve personal autonomy through the exercise of independent judgement, attain adulthood through the recognition of others as equal but different, gain a sense of citizenship through the assumption of our civic rights and responsibilities, and realize our full potential as sentient beings with the capacity for human ‘flourishing’ and ‘happiness’ (eudaimonia). In order to appreciate the pivotal role that education plays in Arendt’s analysis of the human condition, we have to understand the emphasis she placed on ‘thoughtfulness’, as the measure of our humanity and on ‘thoughtlessness’, as the measure of our inhumanity. Education sustains and develops the human capacity: to think together (phronesis), to think for oneself (what Arendt called ‘the two-in-one’ of thinking), and to think from the point of view of others (what she termed ‘representative thinking’). From the developing constellation of ideas embedded in her vast and varied body of work, the author infers a notion of education as a necessary preparation for personal fulfillment, social engagement, and civic participation.

In An Education in Judgment, philosopher D. N. Rodowick makes the definitive case for a philosophical humanistic education aimed at the cultivation of a life guided by both self-reflection and interpersonal exchange. Such a life is an education in judgment, the moral capacity to draw conclusions alone and with others, and letting one’s own judgments be answerable to the potentially contrasting judgments of others. Thinking, for Rodowick, is an art we practice with and learn from each other on a daily basis. In taking this approach, Rodowick follows the lead of Hannah Arendt, who made judgment the cornerstone of her conception of community. Book excerpt: Appearing for the first time in English, this book by Jacques Taminiaux is a systematic investigation into Hannah Arendt's intellectual relationship to Heidegger, the implications of which are indispensable to understanding the philosophical choices of our times. Beginning his investigation with Heidegger's 1924-25 lecture course on Plato's Sophist, wherein Heidegger originally formulated his fundamental ontology, Taminiaux focuses on the student Hannah Arendt's first encountering "a set of problems of immediate importance and urgency." The author shows that Arendt's The Human Condition may be read both in its structure and in its themes—action, the world, the principle of individuation, the public realm—as a veritable retort and reply to Heidegger. Arendt is likened to the Maid from Thrace, a reference to Plato's Theaetetus wherein the Maid laughs at the philosopher who, while walking with his gaze to the stars above, falls into a well. But Arendt's critique of Heidegger cuts much deeper than this. While the political import of Arendt's work has long been recognized, Taminiaux's book systematically develops the philosophical framework which helps give shape to those political views. Thus one of the functions of The Life of the Mind, Taminiaux argues, is to reject the rigid division between the speculative thinker and the "common man", or the vita contemplativa and the vita activa. Contrary to other recent studies on these two figures, Taminiaux claims "that Arendt's two major works...reveal at every page not at all a dependency upon Heidegger...but rather a constant, and increasingly ironic, debate with him." In the process, Heidegger's philosophical work is interpreted in terms of its own political significance.
