Student–veterans are the least engaged group on campuses (McNair & Stielow, 2012). Integration methods and rational choice methods of student–veteran engagement, used together, lead to academic progress during and after military tours of duty. The research question guiding this study asked which factors of engagement impact academic progress for student–veterans. This was a correlational study designed to examine which aspects of rational choice (Downs, 1957) and integration (Tinto, 1975) predict academic progress for students who are also veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, or Operation New Dawn. A correlational design was used to analyze the relationship between engagement and academic progress in a self-selected sample of 40 undergraduate students who were veterans of these operations. Engagement was operationally defined as a student’s quality of satisfaction, socialization, goals, persistence, and acceptance with school and school-related activities that enhance academic progress (Alrashidi et al., 2016). There were moderate positive relationships between educational engagement and the variables of goals, persistence, social environment, acceptance, and satisfaction. The findings were that there were no relationships between the variables of goals, persistence, social environment, acceptance, and satisfaction and accumulated academic credits. However, there were significant relationships linking persistence and acceptance to GPA. -- From abstract.

Book excerpt: The major purpose of this study was to investigate whether the level of engagement, as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) correlates with veterans' academic success as measured by cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). Participants were senior college students, at a four-year urban public university who completed the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The design compared two years that the survey was administered, 2011 and 2013. The NSSE was also used to examine differences in perception among veterans, nontraditional and traditional students. Based on the quantitative analysis it was determined that the more engaged veterans are the better their GPA. While there was no statistical significance, there were positive correlations for veterans between GPA and their relationships with students, faculty, and administrative personnel in the 2011 sample; the 2013 sample showed a negative correlation. The analysis also determined that perceptions in quality of interaction with faculty, advisors, and administration changed from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, perceptions of veterans showed they felt the campus was supportive in 2011, however did not feel the same in 2013. The results of this quantitative study provide higher education institutions and researchers additional insight into which areas of their university services need attention in order to assist in the academic success of student veterans.

The purpose of this research study was to explore the college experience of student veterans and identify ways to help them succeed academically. More specifically, this study sought to identify factors that predict the academic success of veterans in their first year of college. The researcher examined veterans’ experiences in college, inside and outside the classroom, in order to identify which engagement activities, if any, influenced their first-term cumulative GPA. The researcher found the following seven variables to be statistically significant predictors of student veterans’ first-term GPA: (a) race, (b) the number of credit hours taken, (c) talking to faculty members about career aspirations, (d) receiving oral feedback from a faculty member about academic performance, (e) attending events on campus, (f) exercising or participating in physical activities, and (g) time spent commuting to class. Increased veteran enrollment has merited examination of the challenges student veterans have encountered at higher education institutions. This study adds to the limited body of knowledge on this topic and contributes to a future plan for the successful education of veterans who attend college.

There are a few existing studies on the skills and abilities soldiers gain while in the military, and even fewer studies on how student veterans can translate their acquired military skills into the academic realm. The purpose of this mixed methods study is to advance the research on student veterans in the community college and the perceptions of their college faculty and staff. Because the existing literature primarily focuses on student veterans' needs, this study aims to challenge the existing deficit models and employ a strengths-based model to provide a new framework for veteran serving institutions. This study provides a new lens, for a deeper understanding of the skills veterans, possess and the ways in which those skills can be capitalized upon and transferred to the academic realm to ensure student veteran success. A closed voluntary and anonymous 55-item survey was distributed to student veterans who volunteered to participate in the study, using Qualtrics, to ensure confidentiality and anonymity. Also, student veterans, English faculty members, and Veteran Resource Center directors were given the opportunity to participate in a one-on-one approximate 30-minute interview with the researcher. The goal was to elicit candid responses about the skills and abilities these students possess, how they transfer them into the academic realm and their perceptions of faculty members' and Veteran Resource Center Directors' attitudes towards student veterans. Results of this study indicate that English faculty and Veteran Resource Center directors' perceptions about student veterans and their acquired skills and abilities are positive, yet, preconceived notions and stereotypes continue to cloud their understanding of student veterans. Findings also indicate that student veterans gained multiple skills in the military and currently use those skills and abilities to succeed academically. An examination of the quantitative and qualitative data suggests there is a great need for the implementation and use of a new model which employs a strengths-based perspective. The researcher proposes the Boots to Books Strengths Model, which uses a strength based lens that informs and impacts the incorporation of military experience and socialization of veterans and their military-acquired skills and abilities in the academic setting; resulting in student veterans' overall academic success, self-efficacy, and sense of belonging.

Book excerpt: As more veterans and service members enroll in higher education, institutions are investing greater resources in the establishment and enhancement of centers to support them. However, little is known about the outcomes associated with utilization of the centers. Furthermore, researchers have consistently aggregated veterans and service members under "student veterans" with little regard for potential differences. Using regression analyses and analysis of variance, this case study explored the effect of visits to a veterans center on grade point average (GPA), the effect of academic need on frequency of visits, and differences in academic achievement for different types of military-affiliated students. Results did not reveal a significant effect of visits on GPA; however, academic need was associated with an increased likelihood of visits. Additionally, differences in academic achievement were found between veterans and those still serving in the military, with the latter students achieving lower cumulative GPAs. Further research to better understand the relationship between utilization of a center and academic achievement is discussed, recommendations for future practice are made, and critical quantitative research approaches are considered to further understand within-group differences for military-affiliated students in higher education.
