Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Collection of Wisconsin Rocks Purpose of the collection. The Educational Collection of Wisconsin Rocks and Ores is designed for use in high schools and other institutions in which general science, elementary geology, physical geography, or geography of Wisconsin is taught. The collection was made by a cooperative agreement between the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and the Department of Geology of the University of Wisconsin. Although it alone will not give students a complete knowledge of rocks, it is hoped that it will stimulate interest in the study of rocks and geology. Rocks lie all about us and are the ultimate source of the soil from which we derive our living. From the ores we derive the metals without which our civilization would be impossible. The treatment of the subject has been made so simple that students should be able to get something out of its study even if no preliminary work has been done on minerals and rocks. Teachers who wish to give such work can secure copies of the laboratory exercises used in the University elementary classes by writing to the Department of Geology. Thorough work in the laboratory cannot be undertaken without having one specimen of each rock or mineral for every three to five students. It is only by drill in the laboratory that students learn to distinguish rocks in a systematic manner. This collection cannot be used for a complete laboratory course since only one set can be furnished to each institution. Either the Geological Survey or the Department of Geology will be glad to determine any specimens of rocks or minerals provided the transportation charges are paid both ways by the sender. Small broken chips of fresh rock are best. Badly weathered specimens cannot be determined readily. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Copper-Bearing Rocks of Douglas County, Wisconsin The method followed in the season's field work was to visit all parts of the two areas above mentioned which were known to have rock outcrops, or in which outcrops might be reasonably expected. In. Such parts north and south traverses were made at intervals of one-half mile, or more frequently when occasion demanded. Thus, in the region where outcrops occur fre quently, the north and south section lines, the north and south quarter section lines and some of the east and west section lines were followed. The larger streams, and in fact all the streams which might be expected to cut down to the bed rock, were also followed. The outcrops seen were located carefully by pacing, and the position of each was indicated as so many paces north and so many paces west of the southeast corner of the given section. In this manner of locating paces equals one mile. Rock samples were taken from most of these outcrops. In all about 775 rock numbers and a considerably greater num ber of specimens were collected. Because of the active interest which is being manifested in the copper deposits of northern Wisconsin, it was deemed best to publish a report on the district without unnecessary delay. Accordingly this report is presented with the hope that it will be of service to those who are at present engaged in exploration for copper, or who are interested in the material development of this part of the state. It should be borne in mind, however, that this report was written before it was possible to make a care ful study of the whole district underlain by the copper-bearing rocks, and even before it was possible to make an exhaustive study of the facts and specimens collected in those areas in which the work was concentrated. Thus this report is necessarily of the nature of a preliminary rather than. Of a final report. At the same timeit should be stated that the essential facts concern mg the geological structure of the areas examined, the geograph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Lakes of Southeastern Wisconsin The scientific aspect of the lakes is no less important. Basins capable of containing water are so numerous and so diverse in character as to form a constant allurement to the study of the geological history of the state, especially of that part of its his tory when most of the state was covered with ice. The immediate purpose of this report is educational. It is in accordance with this purpose that the report is issued as the second in a series of educational bulletins. That lakes form a. Large part of the natural scenery of Wisconsin is sufficient rea son why they should be utilized in the work of teaching. In addition to their own importance as lakes, they Show valuable analogies to the work of the ocean. The same forces and pro cesses are at work here with the exception of those involved in tides. The same forms are produced and their relations are more clearly seen because their dimensions are smaller. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections, Vol. 5 The fourth volume of the Wisconsin Historical Collections was published in 1859; nine years elapsed, however, before its successor appeared. The outbreak of the War of Secession, with its enormous State expenditures, led to retrenchment in every possible direction. Among the publications issued under the patronage of the young Commonwealth were the Collections; but this being one of the enterprises not essential to the life of the State, very naturally it was in 1860 suspended by special act. Six years later, the war being concluded, the legislature authorized (chapter 135, Laws of 1866) a new volume, to be issued in three successive parts of a hundred and fifty pages each, during the years 1867, 1868, and 1869. Dr. Draper found it inconvenient to commence publication in 1867, but in the latter part of the following year published the three parts simultaneously. These were, however, bound separately, and in paper covers - part I, comprising pp. 1-160; part II, pp. 161-320; and part III, pp. 321-416, besides a general index to all. Issued in that ephemeral form, these parts were easily separated from each other, so that after a few years only persons accustomed to book collecting or having the library habit, possessed the three intact. The result was, that a complete set of volume v soon became known the country over as a rarity. The Society's own stock, although carefully husbanded, was quite exhausted as early as 1888, twenty years after publication; and collectors of Wisconsiniana have at any time within the past fifteen years often paid second-hand dealers for this volume as much as ten and twelve dollars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisconsin Archeologist, Vol. 3: Stone Pestles and Mortars The New York pestles are largely Algonkian, a few are said to have been found on Iroquois sites. Of the large stone pestles some are known to have been used in wooden mortars. The writer was not impressed with the stone mortars found in New York collections: Their number was small and they were but crude affairs. In the' American Museum of Natural History, New York, there were on exhibition a series of large stone pestles from Pennsylvania. These were similar in form to those found in New York. None were, however, of as large a size, as the larger specimens seen at Albany. There were here also some large stone-pestles from Maine. The United States National Museum has in its' great collections numerous large stone pestles from different parts of the eastern United States.
