Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to the report. Chapter 2 addresses political and socioeconomic developments in post-independence Tanzania. Chapter 3 considers education, training, and youth problems and maps the pathways that exist between educational provision, vocational training, and employment in the formal and informal sectors. It includes results of a small survey of primary school pupils and informal sector youth that considers their aspirations, expectations, and opinions about education, training, and employment. Chapter 4 describes the provision of assistance and vocational training by governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Chapter 5 focuses on the informal sector. It examines the government's acknowledgment of the socioeconomic importance of the informal sector and its proposals to provide for and encourage its future development. Examples of informal sector enterprises are examined. Chapter 6 presents each type of training provision operating in the country as a case study. Chapter 7 considers such factors as the following: function of primary and secondary education, suggestions to enhance current training provision and future recurrent training needs, improvement of the profile of women operators, and models to introduce innovation in rural and urban enterprises. Appendixes include interview schedules and questionnaires. (Contains approximately 125 references. (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can democracy only survive if it is participatory? Is participatory democracy a prerequisite for sustainable development? Are trade unions the most appropriate body through which such aims can be implemented? These critical questions are tackled in Gérard Kester's book, Trade Unions and Workplace Democracy in Africa, which applies an unparalleled depth of research to these issues as they impact African nations, including: Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Rigorously structured, it sets the background of the research and the underlying theory, before presenting the learning experiences within different countries and the the broad implications of the research findings for policy making on democratic participation.

Book excerpt: In today’s world, globalization bears intense interdependencies between countries, and the impact global business transactions have on society and economics is more palpable than ever. Despite this, many developing countries in the global market find themselves struggling to support perpetual population growth. These countries must find ways to attain sustainable development in the economic, social, and environmental sectors. International Perspectives on Socio-Economic Development in the Era of Globalization seeks to examine the existing variability of development in the global marketplace and to identify the catalysts responsible for this disparity of success. This title analyzes the economic frontiers, social norms, and infrastructural capabilities that factor into the socio-economic growth of the developing and under-developed world. This book will become a definitive text for policy makers, academics, students, and business executives.
