Book excerpt: Comprehensive and authoritative, this Handbook provides a nuanced description and analysis of educational systems, practices, and policies in Asian countries and explains and interprets these practices from cultural, social, historical, and economic perspectives. Using a culture-based framework, the volume is organized in five sections, each devoted to educational practices in one civilization in Asia: Sinic, Japanese, Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu. Culture and culture identities essentially are civilization identities; the major differences among civilizations are rooted in their different cultures. This framework offers a novel approach to capturing the essence of the diverse educational systems and practices in Asia. Uniquely combining description and interpretation of educational practices in Asia, this Handbook is a must-have resource for education researchers and graduate students in international and comparative education, globalization and education, multicultural education, sociocultural foundations of education, and Asian studies, and for educational administrators and education policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume comprises papers presented at an international symposium on 'Transmissions and Transformations: Learning through the Arts in Asia' organized by the IIC-Asia Project. The essays, by educationists from different Asian countries, highlight the diverse as also the distinctive ways of transmitting knowledge through the arts and the crafts. The essays are a significant contribution to the recent focus on evolving alternative pedagogical tools in the formal and non-formal systems of education. The international symposium, held in 2005, gathered on one platform people from different parts of Asia -- Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Australia, besides India -- to explore the Asian methodologies of transmission of knowledge. The participants shared the fund of their experience on innovative projects to use the arts as a tool in the educational system for sensitizing the younger generation towards their cultural heritage. The conference stressed the need for identifying the characteristic features of the numerous strategies for transmitting information, knowledge and techniques that existed in the Asian continent, not only through the written word but also through the oral, the visual and the performative mediums. The IIC-Asia Project was launched in 1997. In the first phase, seminars were organized, each focusing on a particular region of Asia and covering its social, economic and political dimensions. In the second phase, a thematic approach was adopted. A number of themes were thus covered: India and Asia: Aesthetic Discourses; Transmissions and Transformations: Learning through the Arts in Asia; Embroidery in Asia: Sui-Dhaga; Crossing Boundaries through Needle and Thread; and Culture of Indigo: Exploring the Asian Panorama - Plant, Product, Power. The IIC-Asia Project has also compiled an anthology of Asian Women's Writing. Four festivals of documentary films made by Asian women filmmakers were also organized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media education in Asia is a relatively young, but rapidly developing part of the curriculum. Research has been conducted and papers have been written on various issues concerning media education in Asia. The dominant models of media education in the world are broadly Western and most are drawn from English-speaking countries. The question is whether a similar pattern exists in Asia, where there may be differences in culture, heritage, beliefs, values, education policy, as well as curriculum and pedagogy. Are educators in Asia following the Western model in developing and implementing media education, or are they devising their own models? With this question in mind, this book sets out to understand the prevailing perspectives regarding media education in various Asian societies. While most debates about media education are carried out in Western contexts, this book hopes to provide a platform for readers to examine this issue in an Asian context.

Book excerpt: Providing a window on educational leadership from an Asian cultural perspective, Liu and Thien’s edited collection describes how educational leadership is linked with national culture in the context of different Asian countries. While much of the scholarship on this topic has been built on Western paradigms, this book examines the measurement of school leadership from a diverse lens by taking cultural context into account while examining educational leadership. Drawing on cross-cultural perspectives, the authors investigate the relationship between leadership for learning and societal culture, in addition to the relationship between leadership style and culture. The text provides a theoretical basis for understanding leadership in the context of Asian countries, and offers practical suggestions for identifying effective, and culturally sensitive leadership practices in similar cultural contexts. An excellent resource for graduate students, researchers in comparative education, educational practitioners looking to improve their education practices, and anyone interested in cultural leadership practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume explores the remarkable expansion of higher education systems and institutions in Asia in recent decades, alongside changing forms of consumerism, mobility and global economic conditions. It demonstrates how recent changes in training, education and employment have sparked new aspirations for possible and desirable livelihoods among the younger generation, while also generating fresh problems and tensions. The authors in this volume critically interrogate the links between education and employment; normative understandings about youth and adulthood; as well as personal, national and regional level aspirations for economic ‘success’. Comparative chapters on Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Nepal, Singapore and Taiwan illustrate how young people are having to forge innovative pathways into the future, while being confronted with ever increasing insecurities. Offering important insights into the kinds of education and employment landscapes that Asian youth are navigating, reworking or trying to avoid, this collection is an essential reference for students and scholars of Asian Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Development Studies, Human Geography and Youth Studies. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Children’s Geographies.
