Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Agriculture Ordinarily, in the development Of a subject it is necessary to have regard for a linear sequence only, though the work may be cumulative and the later stages assume a knowledge of all that has preceded, or at most the change of attitude is gradual. In this subject it seems necessary for the delimitation of the different phases that these changes of aspect be abrupt and at right angles. While it is possible to develop either of these subjects without regard to either of the others, the ideal of an agri cultural Or scientific education which has regard for a child as a future citizen rather than as a poet, money-maker or scientist must consider the necessity of all three factors. And the educator who is presenting any phase of the subject cannot deal justly with his pupils if he have not an instinctive regard for the previous aspects of his pupils toward the materials with which he is working. Graphic representation of three dimensions - When a product is made from three factors it may be graphically represented by a rectangular solid, the three dimensions of the solid standing for the three factors. In the nature group the common mass of subject matter may be represented by the solid, its three dimensions being the cultural, the economic and the scientific factors. This figure implies the essential relationship of the three subjects, nature study, agriculture and science, namely, that they are aspects at right angles to each other of a common mass of materials, that taking them in a fixed sequence does not relieve the student or teacher from the necessity of carrying all three factors in mind, or such of them as have been previous Objects of study (an Obligation that the teacher especially should regard), and that proficiency in one does not imply any degree of proficiency in the others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Its Educational Needs We are trying very hard in New York to bring the work of our schools to the support of our industries. A year ago when I discussed the relations of public schools to the mechanical industries, I observed that the reasoning would be different as to the agricultural industries because the situations are unlike, and that I would take up that theme at some future time. I turn to it now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the High School There must be a philosophy of secondary agricultural education. Conscious aims must be set up and their desirability established, and means and methods worked out that shall be effective in securing the realization of these aims. Clearer ideas are needed of the peda gogical principles involved, and the aims in view need to be more clearly defined. In this day of special methods for the teaching of the various school subjects, there should also be one for the teaching of agriculture. So far as our knowledge goes, there is not a book that treats of the methods of teaching this subject in the high school. A consider able amount has been written on the methods of teaching nature study in the elementary school, and the agricultural colleges have their own peculiar methods adaptable to the needs of the college student, but the field embracing school methods in secondary agri culture is still a virgin one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education for Teachers Prejudice, inertia, and misgivings are everywhere gradually yielding place to the new rural education. Country communities are demanding that their schools educate in terms of rural life; normal schools are rapidly instituting and perfecting departments for the training of rural teachers; and the colleges are offering courses in rural leadership, and in the teach ing of agriculture, home economics, and farm manual training. Tens of thousands of teachers have sud denly become conscious of the new demands that are being made on them. Not all may take advantage of the facilities offered by the higher institutions of learning, while many who take brief courses in sum mer sessions feel the need of keeping in constant touch with the new ideas in agricultural education along its fundamental lines of development. Dr. T rue's paper is a clear presentation of the claims of agricultural science and is worthy of a thoughtful reading by teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Next Step in Agricultural Education or the Place of Agriculture in Our, American System of Education an Address Nor would I put all the so-called industries in one class of schools and the professions in another. In a large sense all study is professional, and in a very large sense, indeed, it is also industrial. Some portion of the training of every indi vidual should be industrial, even manual, and another portion of the training of every individual should be distinctly mental, until habits of thought are formed quite independent of material activity. For these reasons, which are fundamental, I would not separate industry from any of our schools. I would make it an integral part of every curriculum, its proportion and character depending upon the prospective profession of the individual; but above all I would have the essence of all occupations, or at least of as many as possible, represented in the same school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Agriculture The order of the main topics as given in the text is logical. But it may be varied to suit special conditions. A very ele mentary agricultural chemistry is given first, because the names of the elements directly concerned in plant life, and somewhat of a familiarity with them, serve as a basis for all agricultural teaching. It also renders possible the use for reference of a larger number of more advanced textbooks and articles by sci entists than would otherwise be available. Familiarity with the elements and with selected compounds is the purpose rather than adherence to applications that are directly related to agri culture. If chemical laboratories are accessible for use, some of the experiments given and others to be dictated by the teacher may well be performed by the student, but excellent results for the purpose here intended may be secured if the experiments are performed by the teacher before the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education in the Public Schools: A Study of Its Development With Particular Reference to the Agencies Concerned This work comprises a series of studies, carried on since the fall of 1909, on agricultural education in the elementary and secondary schools of the United States with special reference to the various agencies promoting it. Much care has been taken to make the bibliography representative of the literature of the different phases of the subject, and to annotate each title so as to give the reader a brief account of the original article or book. This seemed more essential than to undertake to give even an approximately complete summary of the literature of the subject, especially since such a summary would include many times the number of titles cited. The writer has attempted, as the subtitle indicates, to bring i together the work of the various agencies promoting agricultural reeducation in the public schools, and to show the contribution each has made or is making to its development. In this new and rapidly developing subject of education it is important for all who are interested to know the methods used and results obtained in different parts of the country, and to recognize the extent of public interest as expressed in federal, state, and private activities in its behalf. The demands for instruction in agriculture in elementary and secondary schools have grown so rapidly as to present a serious problem to teachers, both as to readjustment of their school work and as to their own preparation to teach the subject. If this account of the development of agricultural education, such as is actually taking place in different parts of the country, with illustrations of types of instruction, and with sources of further information, may be of some service to the teachers of our rural schools, or to others interested in rural education, the writer will feel well repaid for all his efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Country Life Education Success had hardly been attained in collegiate courses in agriculture when secondary schools for agricultural education began successfully to develop. In 1888 the University of Minnesota began an experiment at developing an agricultural high-school course. This experiment is of none the less value anal of all the greater interest because it was an outgrowth of the failure of agricultural courses of collegiate grade to gain a foothold in a State university. Just as Congress by its landgrant act forced colleges of agriculture upon the State, this agricultural high-school movement was injected into the school system upon the initiative of farmers and business men. At present between thirty and forty agricultural high schools have been established in the United States. In one line of country-lit'e education school men and nonschool men have together taken up the practical in school work. Farmers and educators together have entered upon the development of rural schools so as to have them cover agriculture and home economics as well as the Three R's. Thus the school people are especially championing the consolidation of rural schools, and the farmers are laying stress upon the introduction of agriculture into all rural schools. Both classes are rap idly coming to favor both propositions. The farmers are coming to see that agriculture can not be successfully introduced into the one-room rural schools, and the teachers are coming to see that agriculture and home economies are to have very strong positions in the primary country school curriculum alongside the Three R's. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Education in Agriculture in the United States The county agricultural schools were first established in Wisconsin in 1902. These schools have been equipped at the expense of the counties where they are located, but the State aids each school to the extent of a year, to be applied to the running expenses. The course of study in each school extends over two years and is of quite a practical character, including agriculture, wood working, iron work ing, and domestic science, besides local United States history, civil government, and commercial arithmetic. County agricultural schools are also found in Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi. The statistics for the normal schools have already been given, show ing that over 100 normal schools in the country are giving instruction in agriculture. This instruction is quite different in character in different schools. In some cases there is a regular course by a special instructor who is a graduate of an agricultural college. In other cases the teaching of agriculture has been taken up by the science teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture Elementary Agriculture is an attempt to utilize the social values of farm life as educative material; it aims to make country boys and girls love farm life, not only because this life is worthy and wholesome, but because farming, if directed by a trained mind, is a most interesting and profitable calling. This book places the emphasis on doing something as a home exercise or project, both for its educational and for its material value; it aims to correlate with farm life, when possible, such related subjects as arithmetic, history, literature, geography and the sciences generally; and it gives pointed suggestions at the end of each chapter for practical and productive work.
