Book excerpt: This book consists of twenty-one empirical studies in the field of education conducted in the Belizean context by Belizean educators. It covers a variety of topics across various levels of education across the six districts in Belize. Each research study article consists of a background that introduces the topic of the study. A brief literature review informs the reader of the conceptual or theoretical framework of the study. The methodology presents the approach, research design, sample, and data collection procedures. The results section shares the raw data collected from the participants. The findings are discussed to bring the study together and it incorporates content from the literature review in the discussion. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made as a result of the conclusions. Each study suggests implications for best practices across the different topic areas. The conclusions of each research study can aid in the development of education policies to enhance the Belize education system.

Book excerpt: This volume describes a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project involving educators from Belize and the U.S. to illustrate the critical role of shared dialogue in transnational teacher education. First identifying issues which inhibited the success of formerly didactic training delivered to Belizean teachers by U.S. educators, this volume documents the transformational impact of a shift to collaborative training approaches and uses first-person accounts from Belizean and U.S. stakeholders to illustrate their successes. Chapters powerfully illustrate that by engaging in Freirean-like dialogue and building relationships based on a mutual understanding of the cultural and historical context, as well as the identity of educators involved, partners are better able to engage in effective transnational pedagogical collaboration. Particular attention is paid to the importance of acknowledging the post-colonial setting and unique positionality of teachers in Belize. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in action research and teacher research, multicultural education, and continued professional development in particular. Those interested in teacher training, education research, and international and comparative education will also benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: "This study examines the evolution of preschool, primary and secondary education in Belize for the period 1816 to 1994 in relation to access, quality, effectiveness and efficiency in the use of available resources. Qualitative analysis of documentary evidence and interviews with 40 Belizean educators was combined with quantitative analysis of enrollment and other statistics. The data collected identified the major development milestones including compulsory attendance for primary students, the Primary School Leaving Certificate, the Belize National Selection examination for primary students, the Caribbean Examination Council examinations for secondary students and local teacher training. Major continuing issues include: lack of proper planning, inadequate human and financial resources, shortages of qualified teachers, high dropout rates, irrelevant curricula, and imbalance between rural and urban educational opportunity. This study concludes that although preschool, primary and secondary education has expanded, much still remains to be done to provide equal access, and improve its quality, effectiveness and efficiency." --

This case study describes the everyday life of two contrasting schools in Belize, a private school and a public school. Modern day school issues affecting the lives of students and families are discussed. In addition, short interviews are conducted with former students of the Belizean school system between the ages of 17 and 26 and explore the changing face of education in Belize. Comparisons and contrasts to United States educational issues are explored. High stakes testing, parental involvement and social issues affecting education are highlighted.
