Book Synopsis The Research Mission of Higher Education Institutions outside the University Sector by : Svein Kyvik
Download or read book The Research Mission of Higher Education Institutions outside the University Sector written by Svein Kyvik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if in most countries non-university higher education institutions did not have originally a research mandate, it is well known that in most cases these institutions have progressively developed research activities and, at least in some countries, the State now has recognized the research role of these institutions and provided support and funding. Moreover, in many countries the role of research in polytechnics, ‘fachhochschulen’, ‘hogescholen’, university colleges, etc is on the political agenda. Despite the importance of the issue, there are very few in-depth studies of research in the non-university sector. These studies show that the development of research in these institutions leads to quite complex interactions with universities, both in the sense of convergence (academic drift) and/or of differentiation of a specific research mandate oriented towards the regional economy. Therefore, this book aims to fill this gap by first analysing a number of transversal issues related to the research mission of these institutions. In its second part it gives an overview of the state of the art in eight European countries.
Book Synopsis Doctoral Education: Research-Based Strategies for Doctoral Students, Supervisors and Administrators by : Lynn McAlpine
Download or read book Doctoral Education: Research-Based Strategies for Doctoral Students, Supervisors and Administrators written by Lynn McAlpine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of the academics who undertake the work of teaching and research is critical to the significance, status and relevance of our universities. There is widespread evidence that doctoral students are not being properly prepared for the changing face of higher education and that once they take up academic positions, they often experience many frustrations and tensions. This book, based on a four-year-long research program conducted by four academics and four graduate students, investigates the experiences of doctoral students, new academics and senior academics as they engage in their work related to doctoral education. Doctoral Education: Research-Based Strategies for Doctoral Students, Supervisors and Administrators offers research-based strategies for improving doctoral education in a non-technical and conversational way. Those strategies include learning to be a new supervisor alongside other academic work, developing an intellectual network during the doctoral journey, giving and receiving feedback on scholarly writing, and preparing for the oral defence. Also, based on research evidence, the book challenges taken-for-granted practices and policies surrounding doctoral education, including the gendered nature of disciplinary practices, the paradox of writing in doctoral education and the public oversight of more and more aspects of academic work. Intended for doctoral students, academics, staff and administrators, this book provides several perspectives on the topic of doctoral education and contains the actual voices of doctoral students and new academics to illustrate its discussion.
Book Synopsis The Rise of the Research University by : Louis Menand
Download or read book The Rise of the Research University written by Louis Menand and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern research university is a global institution with a rich history that stretches into an ivy-laden past, but for as much as we think we know about that past, most of the writings that have recorded it are scattered across many archives and, in many cases, have yet to be translated into English. With this book, Paul Reitter, Chad Wellmon, and Louis Menand bring a wealth of these important texts together, assembling a fascinating collection of primary sources—many translated into English for the first time—that outline what would become the university as we know it. The editors focus on the development of American universities such as Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and the Universities of Chicago, California, and Michigan. Looking to Germany, they translate a number of seminal sources that formulate the shape and purpose of the university and place them next to hard-to-find English-language texts that took the German university as their inspiration, one that they creatively adapted, often against stiff resistance. Enriching these texts with short but insightful essays that contextualize their importance, the editors offer an accessible portrait of the early research university, one that provides invaluable insights not only into the historical development of higher learning but also its role in modern society.

This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the numerous and competing demands that face America's public research universities and considers how institutions and their leaders can best navigate this challenge to ensure longevity, relevance, and success on the local, national, and global stage. Today's public research universities have the unique challenge of responding to new societal pressures and policies, while remaining true to their core educational missions and values. Highlighting the multiple roles that universities must now fulfil - as institutions of higher learning, as research bodies, as institutions with global reputations, and as organizations that serve the public - the volume asks how they can best evolve in the rapidly changing education landscape. Tackling subjects such as faculty culture, the role of technology, financial sustainability, institutional identity, diversity, and organizational development, chapters identify innovative and transformative mechanisms for acclimatizing the public research university to current educational, academic, and societal needs. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in higher education, educational reform and policy, and the sociology of education more broadly.
Book Synopsis Research and Development in University Mathematics Education by : Viviane Durand-Guerrier
Download or read book Research and Development in University Mathematics Education written by Viviane Durand-Guerrier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last thirty years or so, the need to address the challenges of teaching and learning mathematics at university level has become increasingly appreciated by university mathematics teachers, and beyond, by educational institutions around the world. Indeed, mathematics is both a condition and an obstacle to success for students in many educational programmes vital to the 21st century knowledge society, for example in pure and applied mathematics, engineering, natural sciences, technology, economics, finance, management and so on. This breadth of impact of mathematics implies the urgency of developing research in university mathematics education, and of sharing results of this research widely. This book provides a bespoke opportunity for an international audience of researchers in didactics of mathematics, mathematicians and any teacher or researcher with an interest in this area to be informed about state-of-the-art developments and to heed future research agendas. This book emerged from the activities of the research project INDRUM (acronym for International Network for Didactic Research in University Mathematics), which aims to contribute to the development of research in didactics of mathematics at all levels of tertiary education, with a particular concern for the development of early-career researchers in the field and for dialogue with university mathematicians. The aim of the book is to provide a deep synthesis of the research field as it appears through two INDRUM conferences organised in 2016 and 2018. It is an original contribution which highlights key research perspectives, addresses seminal theoretical and methodological issues and reports substantial results concerning the teaching and learning of mathematics at university level, including the teaching and learning of specific topics in advanced mathematics across a wide range of university programmes.
Book Synopsis Gender and the Modern Research University by : Patricia M. Mazón
Download or read book Gender and the Modern Research University written by Patricia M. Mazón and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1890s, German feminists fighting for female higher education envied American women their small colleges. Yet by 1910, German women could study at any German university, a level of educational access not reached by American women until the 1960s. This book investigates this development as well as the cultural significance of the tremendous debate generated by aspiring female students. Central to Mazón's analysis is the concept of academic citizenship, a complex discourse permeating German student life. Shaped by this ideal, the student years were a crucial stage in the formation of masculine identity in the educated middle class, and a female student was unthinkable. Only by emphasizing the need for female gynecologists and teachers did the women's movement carve out a niche for academic women. Because the nineteenth-century German university was the model for the modern research university, the controversy resonates with contemporary American debates surrounding multiculturalism and higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the implications of an increasingly competitive global system of higher education research? In what ways have policy changes to the evaluation and funding of university research impacted on higher education institutions in the UK and in other countries? How do institutional and departmental managers and individual academics organise and manage research to best maximise the gains of being successful in research? The Research Game in Academic Life turns a spotlight on the importance of research in determining the reputation and success of universities and the academics who work within them. It provides an overview of the changing policies of funding and evaluating university research during the last twenty years and analyses how this has impacted on the status and hierarchical positioning of universities in the United Kingdom. Comparisons of research policies in other national systems of higher education are also made, with examples from Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Australia. Empirical data is drawn from qualitative case studies of two UK universities and focuses on the way in which the management and organisation of research within these institutions has responded to the demands of economic and accountability pressures and successive rounds of the Research Assessment Exercise. More particularly, the book reflects the human stories and accounts from the individuals who serve to maintain the important research and teaching work of these institutions. The Research Game in Academic Life offers a thoughtful analysis and will make essential reading for researchers, department leaders, policy makers and managers in higher education.

Book Synopsis What does Good Education Research Look Like? by : Lyn Yates
Download or read book What does Good Education Research Look Like? written by Lyn Yates and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “a powerful, well informed argument for the importance of pluralism… This book will tell young researchers what they need to know about doing educational research; it will encourage experienced researchers to see their own practice in context. It is a profound book that everyone should read." – Professor Jane Gaskell, Dean, OISE, University of Toronto “This brilliant guide to judging educational research examines the most basic questions about research practice that most people think are settled, and reveals them as problematic… Humorous, sharp, and thoughtful, this readable inquisition explores from differing perspectives ‘what does good education research look like’ in multiple forms including dissertations, journal articles, and grant proposals.” – Sari Knopp Biklen, Laura and Douglas Meredith Professor, Syracuse University, USA This book explains and critically examines some key debates about the quality and value of education research, and shows how it must meet different demands in different places, times and conditions. A major part of the book provides detailed analyses and guidance to different areas in which education research is judged: from academic theses to the press; from highest level competition for prestigious grants to collaborative work with practitioners. Lyn Yates asks probing questions in six education research arenas – the thesis, the research grant application, the journal article, the consultancy application, book publishing, and the press: Who are the judges here? What expectations and networks do they bring to the task? What are the explicit and implicit criteria for good research in that area? What are the common failings? What does good research look like? The book is an indispensable companion to existing textbooks on research methodology. It provides a clear and provocative discourse about the banalities and disorderliness in which education researchers have to operate.
