Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Administration of Education in a Democracy This book was projected with the idea that the time is here for such a preliminary treatment, as an organic whole, of the field of educational administration. In seeking for a unifying principle the inevitable choice fell to our national ideals as expressed in democracy as we Americans have conceived it. The aim has been to deal with principles, giving just enough space to history and description to furnish a suitable background and to account for sequences. In this way only did it seem possible to deal with the prob lems presented in such a constructively critical manner as the situation seemed to demand. The book makes its appeal (1) to teachers and stu dents of education, (2) to school boards and all school officials, and (3) to public men and legislators interested in a comprehensive survey of the problems of public education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for Democracy Indeed, With its present organization, aim, and equipment of teachers, the school system would be extremely defective even though every indi vidual child enjoyed the advantages Which the smallest number now possess. In organization, the public school system follows the military and industrial plan With its various grades of super visory officials. In aim, there is lack of vision, and an imperfect understanding of purpose. Thehaphazard equipment of teachers is too glaring to need comment. Our educational system there fore must be characterized as unprogressive, antiquated, fundamentally undemocratic, and inadequate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture, Discipline and Democracy IF I had been writing wholly from the standpoint of edu cational tradition, the title of this book would have been Democracy through Culture and Discipline. For the first step taken toward democratic education was to ensure in telligent citizenship by making the culture and discipline, which in the past had been reserved for privileged social classes, accessible to the whole people through a system of free schools. Writing as I have done, wholly as an investi gator who records In as logical order as he can the results of his Inquiry, a truer title for my work as it reaches its comple tion would be Culture and Discipline through Direct Prep aration for Democracy. For from the standpoint of cul ture and discipline as distinct from democracy, I have been forced to see that for the majority of individuals who do not continue to lead the life of academic Specialists, no discipline can be lasting or culture continuing which is not closely related to every-day life. And to an education which is democratic only in its Opportunity, I have gradually come to add education which is democratic, on the one hand, in its ideals, its subject matter, its organization and its method, and on the other, in compulsion which demands not only that each individual Shall have through compulsory school at tendance the rudiments of academic knowledge, but, through the compulsion Of repetition, every detail of culture and dis cipline essential to usefulness to the community and the state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Democracy The present world situation compels a serious reexamination of the foundations of democracy. Especially does it necessitate a consideration of educational processes and materials. In the haste to achieve efficiency may it not be that some indispensable values have been sacrificed? The words of Jesus sound again with a new emphasis: "What shall it profit a man. if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" The same applies to a nation as well as to the individual. "Has democracy failed?" men are asking to-day. Has Christianity failed? These have not failed, but, as one recent writer has said, they have been found difficult and have not yet been fairly tried. Under the conviction that a fresh study of the relation of religious education to democracy would just now be especially timely, the present writer prepared for the Commission on Christian Education of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America a Survey of Week-day Religious Instruction. In this task many valuable suggestions and criticisms were made by the members of the Commission. The writer would express his peculiar obligation to the chairman, Dean W. F. Tillett, D.D.; the secretary, the Rev. H. H. Meyer, D.D.; and to the chairman of the special subcommittee appointed for this purpose, Professor W. J. Thompson, D.D. This Survey, which appeared as a part of the Quadrennial Report of the Commission, has been carefully revised and is now contained in Part I of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching Democracy in the North Carolina Public Schools If the North Carolina public schools are to do their share in defending and improving American Democracy, we must continue with unabated zeal our program of curriculum construction. Democracy more than any other form of government demands a school curriculum that effectively meets the needs of the individual and the society in which he lives. The most. Effective curriculum emerges from locally recognized needs. In this critical period I trust that every teacher and administrator will be especially alert to the problems peculiar to their specific localities. In planning the next steps in our educational program for the defense and improvement of democracy let us continue with renewed vigor our efforts to secure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of to-Morrow: The Adaptation of School Curricula to Economic Democracy One in touch with educational thought to-day in any progressive country realises that there is great diversity of opinion regarding the value of the work now being done in the schools. During the past ten years the present writer, in the discharge of certain special duties, has found it necessary to read many hundreds of editorials in the leading newspapers at home and abroad regarding contemporary educational practices. While in many cases there has been hearty praise of both the curriculum and the methods in the schools of to-day, yet the deepest impression made by the reading of these editorials has been that there is widespread popular discontent with educational institutions as they are now conducted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education The following pages embody an endeavor to detect and state the ideas implied in a democratic society and to apply these ideas to the problems of the enterprise of education. The discussion includes an indication of the constructive aims and methods of public education as seen from this point of view, and a critical estimate of the theories of knowing and moral development which were formulated in earlier social condi tions, but which still operate, in societies nominally democratic, to hamper the adequate realization of the democratic ideal. As will appear from the book itself, the philosophy stated in this book connects the growth of democracy with the development of the experimental method in the sciences, evolutionary ideas in the biological sciences, and the industrial reorganization, and is concerned to point out the changes in subject matter and method of education indicated by these developments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of a Democratic School System It is probable that at the close of the great emergency in which we now find ourselves this nation will undergo a notable reappraisal and a considerable reconstruction. A nation seldom makes large sacrifices for the maintenance of its ideals without becoming sensitive to practices which fall far short of them. Already we are deeply concerned to know just what qualities of personal character and precisely what kinds of human relationships are fundamental to the realization of a truly democratic life. We are asking whether or not we possess these in adequate degree, and how we are to overcome our discrepancies. The American cannot long ask himself these questions without ultimately looking to the public school system for ways and means of rebuilding our national character and life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy in Education: A Social Interpretation of the History of Education Educational experiment and reconstruction no longer need an excuse; all that they need is illumination. This will come from a number of sources, one of which must be history. It is said that "history proves nothing," which may be true; it is certainly true that history leaves many things to disprove. And history does reveal many phases of the educational problem which must be made the subject of critical investigation. History digs up the problems and shows their roots grown deep in old soils. But history has been too freely presented as mere transpiring of events; or, if any lessons are to be learned from history, those are usually along the line of the "vanity of human wishes." None the less, either from history or from the clear sky, we have become possessed of certain ideals, ideals which run counter to some of the assumptions of the past, and of certain traditional survivals of the past that still remain with us. The modern, Western world professes to have taken democracy as its political goal; certain of the peoples of this Western world profess to have taken it also as their social goal; and all of them, or nearly all, feel the profound urge of that same ideal as an economic and industrial goal. Nowhere, however, has democracy been taken as the educational goal. It has been, indeed, professed in America; but it has never been professed seriously enough to cause us to transform our traditional and therefore autocratically-inspired educational instrumentalities into actual democratic institutions.
