Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, at a time of high unemployment, this book provides a critical analysis of the role played by education in solving unemployment. It examines the practical, social and psychological effects of unemployment on adults and argues that formal institutional responses are inadequate within any long term perspective, and that it is rather community, informal and often unofficial initiatives that will provide learning experiences for unemployed people.

Book excerpt: Young adulthood - ages approximately 18 to 26 - is a critical period of development with long-lasting implications for a person's economic security, health and well-being. Young adults are key contributors to the nation's workforce and military services and, since many are parents, to the healthy development of the next generation. Although 'millennials' have received attention in the popular media in recent years, young adults are too rarely treated as a distinct population in policy, programs, and research. Instead, they are often grouped with adolescents or, more often, with all adults. Currently, the nation is experiencing economic restructuring, widening inequality, a rapidly rising ratio of older adults, and an increasingly diverse population. The possible transformative effects of these features make focus on young adults especially important. A systematic approach to understanding and responding to the unique circumstances and needs of today's young adults can help to pave the way to a more productive and equitable tomorrow for young adults in particular and our society at large. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults describes what is meant by the term young adulthood, who young adults are, what they are doing, and what they need. This study recommends actions that nonprofit programs and federal, state, and local agencies can take to help young adults make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. According to this report, young adults should be considered as a separate group from adolescents and older adults. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults makes the case that increased efforts to improve high school and college graduate rates and education and workforce development systems that are more closely tied to high-demand economic sectors will help this age group achieve greater opportunity and success. The report also discusses the health status of young adults and makes recommendations to develop evidence-based practices for young adults for medical and behavioral health, including preventions. What happens during the young adult years has profound implications for the rest of the life course, and the stability and progress of society at large depends on how any cohort of young adults fares as a whole. Investing in The Health and Well-Being of Young Adults will provide a roadmap to improving outcomes for this age group as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, economic and demographic changes have brought into question the adequacy of initial education programmes for continuous employment. While the primary focus of debate has been on creating structures of continuous education and training linked to the economic needs of Britain, arguments and movements for wider access to all forms of learning have continued to be made. Drawing on the experience of other European countries as well as Britain, this book addresses the three major themes of the ongoing debates: who participates in what forms of education and training and how can access be widened and increased: the relationship between economic development, education and training; the education and training developed by social movements, and the changes sought in the formal sector of provision.

This is a valuable paper as a statement of some of the key issues facing those who seek to develop provision for the unemployed and as a stimulus to discussion among providers and practitioners as to ways and means of tackling those issues.

Book excerpt: Twenty-two local development projects for unemployed adults in England and Wales are described. Each was conducted during the first three years' operation of the REPLAN program funded by the Department of Education and Science, the Welsh Office, and the Manpower Services Commission. REPLAN aims to improve the quality, variety, and relevance of educational opportunities open to unemployed adults. The project descriptions are organized by geographic region. Each description states the project's global goal, specific objectives, monetary and educational staffing resources, activities, and outcomes, including "lessons learned" by those administering the project. Some of the projects' goals differed, but very often sought to help the unemployed (1) cope with unemployment; (2) improve their confidence and ability to seek employment; (3) consider getting more education; and (4) develop or preserve vocational skills. The methods/activities used to deliver project services often included informal education, community involvement, self-paced learning, and participant involvement in planning and running the projects' activities.
