Book excerpt: This book puts forward a new model of acculturation combining psychological, sociolinguistic and identity theories to study Turkish immigrants across the globe. The authors argue that such a multidisciplinary perspective is very important in understanding acculturation processes in migrants, particularly for pivotal aspects such as language and identity. Studying one group or several groups within a country is the most common methodological approach in acculturation studies. The authors argue on the basis of their extensive ethnographic work that focusing on one immigrant ethnic group across countries instead provides deeper insights into interactive acculturation orientations of both the receiving societies and immigrant groups. They therefore synthesize findings from their work on Turkish immigrants in Australia and several countries in Europe. Moreover, they include extensive accounts of acculturation across several generations of Turkish migrants, thereby giving readers insights into the long-term acculturation process. The book critically discusses language maintenance and shift, child-rearing practices and socialization beliefs, and educational achievement in Turkish immigrants, and uses a mixed-methods approach. It is meant for researchers and policy makers interested in acculturation and the role of the acculturation context. In a nutshell, the book stresses the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of linguistic habits and cultural integration tendencies and convinces the reader about the complexity of the background factors that play a role in shaping the behaviour of immigrant minorities. Anyone who reads the book will be equipped with the skills to critically assess research on immigrant language maintenance.

From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity, Education and Belonging examines the social and educational experiences of Arab and Muslim Australian youth against a wider political backdrop. Arab and Muslim Australian youth have long faced considerable social obstacles in their journey towards full integration, but as the discourse of insecurity surrounding these conflicts intensifies, so too do the difficulties they face in Australian society. Events such as the war in Iraq, Australia's presence in Afghanistan and perceptions of Iran as a nuclear threat—together with domestic events such as the Cronulla riots—place Arabs and Muslims at the centre of global instability and exacerbate feelings of tension and anxiety. At a time when fear and confusion permeate their experiences, Identity, Education and Belonging is an all-important study of the lives of Muslim and Arab youth in Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kalwant Bhopal and Patrick Danaher examine 'race', identity and gender within education and explore the difficulties of relating these concepts to the experience of students in higher education. In drawing together the experience of local and international students in the UK and in Australia, they examine the ways identities are understood and conceptualized within higher education in local contexts and on a global level. They consider the complexity of 'race', gender and identity in relation to education within the context that education continues to be dominated by predominantly white, middle class values and perspectives. Identity and Pedagogy in Higher Education examines the extent to which education as a vehicle for change in the light of the controversial debates surrounding race and gender inequalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated between two continents, the Turkish Republic emerged in 1923 as the successor to the multinational Ottoman Empire. A young secular Republic with an old history, Turkey is a diverse and complex country in terms of social composition, politics, culture and economy, where cultures and races coexist. This dynamism is apparent in Turkey's economy, with its rapidly developing financial markets, an energetic entrepreneurial class, a thriving industrial base, and fast-growing communications. Today Turkey is striving to consolidate its democracy but it also faces other challenges. On the one hand it wishes to maintain its Islamic tradition but on the other it desires to be part of the West. In addition, it seeks to find a balance between its traditional role in Western defence strategy and its new regional role in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. This bibliography fully updates the original volume, published in 1982.
