Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education by Doing, or Occupations and Busy Work, for Primary Classes In observing the results achieved by the Kinder garten, educators have felt that Froebel's great discovery of education by occupations must have something for the public school - that a further ap plication of the putting of experience and action in the place of books and abstract thinking, could be made beyond the fifth or sixth year of the child's life. This book is an outgrt of this idea, con ceived in the Spirit of the New Education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plans for Busy Work: Prepared by the Boston Primary Teachers' Association The primary teacher must solve a double problem. She must not only teach the children how to read, write, and Cipher under her guidance, but she must also teach them how to study independently, so that they may be prepared to use books for themselves. While the teacher of higher grades may content her self with explaining and assigning the lessons, leaving the pupil to perform his tasks unaided, the primary teacher must direct the period of study as well as the recitation and the teaching exercises. In an ordinary school of from forty to sixty pupils, not more than fifteen or twenty should be reciting at once; the others must busy themselves at the desk, table, or blackboard. Our problem is to devise suitable and profitable occupation for these pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year of Primary Occupation Work In all life we find the strong and the weak, the fit and the unfit. Those who are strong and fitted for life's work will succeed in spite of difficulties; but what is to become of those whom Nature has not so richly endowed? They, too, must be reached, not by forcing development to the plane of the strong, but by meeting them on their own plane and helping them along lines which their strength and ability allow them to take. Thus we may find, even in an unpromis-i ing life, an unsuspected worth. To the teacher's care is given the strong and the weak, the fit and the unfit. It is easy to aid the development of the quick, alert-minded children, but she must study the problem of the best ways in which to help the slowest and least matured. These children usually fall into the third division. The wisest way to solve the problem is to consider this division a Step between the kindergarten (if there is one preceding) and the regular first grade. To combine the foundation of primary work with advanced kindergarten work, and to carry the children on as fast as they can easily go toward regular first grade work the following year. They will then form an advanced first division with the mature children coming from the kindergarten. Children of five years who are eligible to enter the primary, but are as yet too immature, or possibly defective. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beat burnout with time-saving best practices for feedback For ELA teachers, the danger of burnout is all too real. Inundated with seemingly insurmountable piles of papers to read, respond to, and grade, many teachers often find themselves struggling to balance differentiated, individualized feedback with the one resource they are already overextended on—time. Matthew Johnson offers classroom-tested solutions that not only alleviate the feedback-burnout cycle, but also lead to significant growth for students. These time-saving strategies built on best practices for feedback help to improve relationships, ignite motivation, and increase student ownership of learning. Flash Feedback also takes teachers to the next level of strategic feedback by sharing: How to craft effective, efficient, and more memorable feedback Strategies for scaffolding students through the meta-cognitive work necessary for real revision A plan for how to create a culture of feedback, including lessons for how to train students in meaningful peer response Downloadable online tools for teacher and student use Moving beyond the theory of working smarter, not harder, Flash Feedback works deeper by developing practices for teacher efficiency that also boost effectiveness by increasing students’ self-efficacy, improving the clarity of our messages, and ultimately creating a classroom centered around meaningful feedback.

Book excerpt: From bestselling writer David Graeber—“a master of opening up thought and stimulating debate” (Slate)—a powerful argument against the rise of meaningless, unfulfilling jobs…and their consequences. Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.” It went viral. After one million online views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. There are hordes of people—HR consultants, communication coordinators, telemarketing researchers, corporate lawyers—whose jobs are useless, and, tragically, they know it. These people are caught in bullshit jobs. Graeber explores one of society’s most vexing and deeply felt concerns, indicting among other villains a particular strain of finance capitalism that betrays ideals shared by thinkers ranging from Keynes to Lincoln. “Clever and charismatic” (The New Yorker), Bullshit Jobs gives individuals, corporations, and societies permission to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture. This book is for everyone who wants to turn their vocation back into an avocation and “a thought-provoking examination of our working lives” (Financial Times).
