Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy and Leadership: On Pragmatism and Virtue presents a theory of leadership drawing on insights from Plato’s Republic, while abandoning his authoritarianism in favor of John Dewey’s democratic thought. The book continues the democratic turn for the study of leadership beyond the incorporation of democratic values into old-fashioned views about leading. The completed democratic turn leaves behind the traditional focus on a class of special people. Instead, leadership is understood as a process of judicious yet courageous guidance, infused with democratic values and open to all people. The book proceeds in three parts, beginning with definitions and an understanding of the nature of leadership in general and of democratic leadership in particular. Then, Part II examines four challenges for a democratic theory of leadership. Finally, in Part III, the theory of democratic leadership is put to the test of addressing problems of poverty, educational frustration, and racial divides, particularly aggravated in Mississippi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Still Education? will appeal to researchers of education – scholars and students alike – in the fields of philosophy, sociology, pedagogy, andragogy, psychology, political theory, anthropology, and history, as well as experts in education management and educational practitioners, such as teachers and textbook authors. The question posed by the title is separated in the book into three more specific questions; the first of which, titled “Education for What?”, investigates the eternal issue the purpose of education. The second section, which examines the most appropriate approaches and expected outcomes for a child-centred perspective, is called “Education for Whom?”; and the third part, “Whose Education?”, takes national, gender and other subtle or self-explanatory characteristics of education and looks at them from the standpoint of discrimination. The volume offers nine different chapters, which provide illuminating and interesting answers to these questions, and, thus, allow them to be more thoroughly resolved and enable rational discourse about them.

The objective is to give the readers multiple blueprints of success providing a varied range of perspectives and solutions. The underlying thought remains that inclusion can truly happen in one way or another but first starts with the singular belief that it can be done. The contributions have been arranged in the following sections: Section A - Inclusive Education: A Global Perspective Section B - Stories of Resilience: Pre-School to University Section C - Healing Touch: Perspectives from Specialists Section D - Creating Inclusive Communities: A Blueprint At the end of each story the editors have included key takeaways, additional pathways and reflective questions for the reader's reference.

Book excerpt: “Semiotics Education Experience” is a collection of fifteen essays edited by Inna Semetsky that explores semiotic approaches to education: semiotics of teaching, learning, and curriculum; educational theory and philosophies of Dewey, Peirce, and Deleuze; education as political semiosis; logic and mathematics; visual signs; semiotics and complexity; semiotics and ethics of the self. This is a landmark collection of cross-disciplinary chapters by international scholars that mark out the appeal and significance of a semiotic approach to education. As Marcel Danesi reminds us in the Foreword, Vygotsky construed learning theory as the science of signs. Semetsky’'-s collection should be widely read by students and scholars in education, philosophy, futures studies, cultural studies, and related disciplines. It deserves the widest dissemination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In East Asian economies such as China, recent mass rural-urban migration has created a new urban underclass, as have their children. However, their inclusion in urban public schools is a surprisingly slow process, and youth identities in newly industrialized countries remain largely neglected. Faced with monetary and institutional barriers, the majority of migrant youth attend low-quality or underperforming migrant schools, without access to the free compulsory education enjoyed by their urban counterparts. As a result, China’s citizen-building scheme and the sustainability of its labor-intensive economy have greatly impacted global economic restructuring. Using thorough ethnographic research, this volume examines the consequences of urban schooling and citizenship education through which school and social processes contribute to the production of unequal class relations. It explores the nexus of citizenship education and identity-forming practices of poor migrant youth in an attempt to foresee the new class formation in Chinese society. This volume opens up the "black box" of citizenship education in China and examines the effect of school and societal forces on social mobility and life trajectories.
