Book excerpt: This book uses belief information as an organizing center for the church's teaching ministry. It offers five detailed models of teaching expressed in terms of how each contributes to the development of faith: information-processing, group interaction, indirect communication, personal development, and action/reflection. Each model includes concrete examples of how the method might be used in a church's educational program to further belief development. To Set One's Heart provides both theory and practice, combining the insights of theology, education, and socialization. The result: an in depth examination of religious belief, teaching, and intentionality.

Book excerpt: God's Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness You are never beyond the reach of God's grace. Neither are you ever beyond the need of God's grace. Without grace we'd never come to Christ. But being a Christian is more than just coming to Christ, it's about growing and becoming more like Jesus. This pursuit of holiness is hard work, and as we enter into this discipline, we sometimes lose sight of grace. Jerry Bridges helps us steer clear of this disastrous distraction, offering a clear and thorough explanation of the gospel and what it means to the believer. Explore how the same grace that brings us to Christ also grows us in Christ. Includes full study guide (which was previously sold as a stand-alone discussion guide, ISBN 9781576839904).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Evangelism: A Discourse, Delivered at the Seventh Anniversary of the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West, in the First Congregational Church of Norwalk, Conn., October 30th, 1850The apostle had spoken of the character of his ministry in Corinth. As to its theme, it could not have been better; for he had known nothing in his preaching to the Corinthians but Christ and him crucified: but the tenor and style of his discourses to them had been comparatively inferior. The dif ference was to be ascribed in part to a defect of capacity in the Corinthians themselves. I could not, he says to them, speak to you as unto Spir itua], but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat, for ye were not able to bear it. He inti mates in the text, that his ministry would have been of higher excellence if the capability of the people had not been so imperfect. He did not speak to all in the same elementary strain which he had used in discoursing to the Corinthians. He sometimes had hearers who could profit by a more elevated mode of instruction, and then his manner rose in accommodation to their superior abilities.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Profiling five distinct paradigms of education through different eras in history, this book casts a vision for a renewal of Christian education—essential for bringing hope to our postmodern world. Understanding the role of education in the reformation of societies will enable churches, families, and schools to reclaim their task for the spread of the gospel in our world today.
