Download or read book ISS 2 Identity, Education and Belonging written by Fethi Mansouri and published by Academic Monographs. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity, Education and Belonging examines the social and educational experiences of Arab and Muslim Australian youth against a wider political backdrop. Arab and Muslim Australian youth have long faced considerable social obstacles in their journey towards full integration, but as the discourse of insecurity surrounding these conflicts intensifies, so too do the difficulties they face in Australian society. Events such as the war in Iraq, Australia's presence in Afghanistan and perceptions of Iran as a nuclear threat—together with domestic events such as the Cronulla riots—place Arabs and Muslims at the centre of global instability and exacerbate feelings of tension and anxiety. At a time when fear and confusion permeate their experiences, Identity, Education and Belonging is an all-important study of the lives of Muslim and Arab youth in Australia.

Chapter 2 describes the background of the Ethnic Liaison Officer Working Party No.2, the government-appointed body that prepared the report. Chapter 3 reviews Australian literature on schooling and the adolescent immigrant. The review points to a need for research on the English language, education, and training needs of immigrants and refugees who arrive in Australia as young adults. Chapter 4 provides an overview of educational choices available to the immigrant student, including English as a Second Language and bilingual education programs. Chapter 5 assesses the educational needs of immigrants who are beyond the age of compulsory schooling. Problems of unemployment and acculturation are given special focus. The appendices list the Working Party's terms of reference and membership, and outline the information needs identified by the Working Party. (KH)
Book Synopsis Teenagers, Literacy and School by : Ken Cruickshank
Download or read book Teenagers, Literacy and School written by Ken Cruickshank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and timely book follows the experiences of four Arabic teenagers, their families and their community, focusing on the role of literacy in their daily lives and the differences between home and school. The author looks at the conflict between expectations and practices at school and in the home, arguing that problems are inevitable where class and cultural differences exist. Emerging themes include: how literacy practices in the community are undergoing rapid change due to global developments in technology how the patterns of written and spoken language in English and Arabic in the home are linked with social practices in logical and coherent ways how many of the family practices that differ from school culture and language become marginalised. Built around these insightful case studies yet grounded in theory, this book is of immediate relevance to teachers working in multicultural contexts and students and lecturers in language/literacy or on TESOL courses.
Book Synopsis Cultures of Schooling (RLE Edu L Sociology of Education) by : Mary Kalantzis
Download or read book Cultures of Schooling (RLE Edu L Sociology of Education) written by Mary Kalantzis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the ways schools respond to cultural and linguistic diversity. A richness of accumulated experience is portrayed in this study of six Australian secondary schools; partial success, near success or instructive failure as the culture of the school itself was transformed in an attempt to meet the educational needs of its students. Set in the context of a general historical background to the development of multicultural education in Australia, a theoretical framework is developed with which to analyze the move from the traditional curriculum of cultural assimilation to the progressivist curriculum of cultural pluralism. The book analyzes the limitations of the progressivist model of multicultural education and suggests a new ‘post-progressivist’ model, in evidence already in an incipient and as yet tentative ‘self-corrective’ trend in the case-study schools.

This work provides insight into comparative and international education work in Australia and New Zealand, where an emerging local style may be developing into a full blown national approach. The 14 essays address issues such as education in third-world Asia, sexism, and culture and power.
