Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Jo Maynes looks to school reform in early modern Europe to show the relevance of early ideas about schooling for understanding contemporary society. She presents the competing perspectives on issues such as the identity and motivations of school reformers, the broad societal changes that made educational reform seem imperative toward the end of the eighteenth century all over the West, the connections between educational change and economic development, the role of schools in the evolution of class relations, the impact of reform on family strategies in the context of early industrialization. The work concludes by assessing historical data on the social impact of school reform and addressing the social meaning of schooling in the past and in the present.

Book excerpt: The volume presents the contributions to a scientific symposium on the development of comprehensive schools in the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Great Britain, and Sweden, convened by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education, West Berlin in December 1987. While the German case is summarized in one contribution, there are two papers for each of the other countries, presented by experts reporting on the basis of their own empirical research on internal and external consequences of the comprehensive school reform efforts. The issue of social selectivity received special attention.

Book excerpt: This book examines both the development of tutoring as a form of education and its influence on 'schooling.' It offers a review of what past educators wrote on their work, the lives of their students, and the wider socio-cultural ramifications during centuries of tutoring. The role of the tutor and the tutor-governess is reviewed as education at home and the corollary use of tutors in the school. The nineteenth century in Europe and America witnessed the widespread use of tutors, and the gradual adoption of mandatory tax-supported public schooling. The study concludes with a brief review of the contemporary uses of tutoring and an analysis of its historical contributions to Western education.

The book provides a differentiated analytical data base, and offers suggestions for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of the state of the art of research on the politics of higher education policy in Canada, the US, and Western Europe. Each thematic chapter combines an extensive literature review with original empirical work that further advances our understanding of policymaking dynamics in higher education. The book covers five key aspects of policymaking, namely the politics of governance as well as funding reforms, the role of interest groups, policy diffusion, and policy framing. These aspects are explored using a unique comparative design that combines comparisons within as well as between regions, and among the five key aspects of policymaking. The conceptual framework is anchored in approaches from institutional theory, namely sociological and historical institutionalism. “This rare book coherently focuses on the same critical challenges that higher education faces in a changing global and national environment. These include vital governance and finance issues and how these are framed and contested by different organizations and interest groups as well as state actors. Within a broad institutionalist framework that reflects the tensions between historical university and national legacies on the one hand and regional and global influences on the other, the authors focus on policymaking in Western Europe, Canada, and the US. This is an engaging and creative endeavor, a must-read for scholars and policymakers alike.” Francisco O. Ramirez, Graduate School of Education Stanford University “This is a real achievement that will contribute to the development of research in politics of higher education policy, finance, and economic development. It is timely in an era when higher learning is increasingly salient to national policy, interest groups, and supranational bodies such as the EU. The focus on Canada, the US, and Europe frames a comparative approach to a competitive higher educational policy arena that has not received systematic study." Sheila Slaughter, Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education, University of Georgia “This fills a gaping hole in research on the politics of higher education. In bringing together research perspectives from governance studies with comparative public policy as well as scholars from Europe and Northern America, this volume will serve as an important reference point for a rapidly growing research field. The exceptionally high quality of editorship is documented by the fact that the chapters are convincingly subsumed under five sub-themes. In short: A must-read for any researcher and student interested in understanding the political foundations of higher education.” Marius R. Busemeyer, Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Konstanz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bologna Reform has been implemented in a large part of the European Union and it is time to take a short pause to reflect over some of the lessons learned up to now. The aim of this book is to share experiences and reflections on English for Specific Purposes pedagogy in Western European higher education. Taking as a starting point the development of the EU policies during the past couple of decades and their national implementations, the chapters in this book provide various perspectives, both theoretical and practical, on the ways in which the reform has been implemented and its effects on the teaching of ESP. Experiences of developing programmes and courses incorporating Content and Language Integrated Learning and Autonomous and Lifelong Learning are described, as well as Problem-Based Learning and Process-Genre Pedagogies. The book also includes chapters on the crucial, but often neglected issue of teacher support in meeting the challenges of teaching content through the medium of English.

This book was released on 2008-12-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most Western European countries, higher education has to an increasing extent been developing outside universities, partly through the establishment of new ins- tutions, and partly through the upgrading of professional and vocational schools into higher education colleges. The main trend in countries with a binary system has been that student numbers have increased more in the college sector than in the university sector. Yet, there is a shortage of in-depth studies on the changes that have taken place in this part of the educational system, and on the processes that have driven this development. The aim of this book is to improve our understanding of these processes, through developing concepts and theoretical perspectives which might offer new insights of complex phenomena. This book is based upon a large number of studies on college education in Norway and in other Western European countries. I have studied change processes in this field over a period stretching back to the late 1970s (Kyvik 1981), and this book synthesises my former publications, as well as updates the development until August 2008, and presents new analyses based on my gradual attainment of deeper insight into the processes that have taken place.
