Book excerpt: This volume presents a project of empirical research on issues of theology, sexuality, and reproductive health and rights. It was carried out by researchers from two theological institutions in Brazil and Colombia in close contact with the grassroots in various civil-society organizations. Numerous studies at twenty-six Latin American institutions on the relation between theology and HIV/AIDS prepared the way for this project. It promotes and applies methodologies for Latin American popular education and participatory action research (PAR). While the project was finalized long before the COVID-19 pandemic hit Latin America and the world, the pandemic gave fresh evidence of the relevance of the project. The present volume is the English translation of the initial Portuguese and Spanish reports about the project, enriched with a new preface. The editors are delighted that this translation will help spread the vital insights from this research to a wider and global readership.

Book excerpt: This book discusses LGBTI+ childhood from a critical, interdisciplinary perspective with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the complex relationship between sexuality, gender and childhood. Placing adultcentrism at the centre of the analytical inquiry, the international range of contributors consider experiences and subjectivities of children, their families and significant contexts. Topics covered include public policies, professional practices and care provision, as well as the tensions and contradictions stemming from the logics of otherness and exceptionality which populate dominant discourses, representations and practices around sex and gender in childhood. This book is intended for researchers and students in gender studies, sexuality studies, education, health, childhood studies and sociology.

This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and culture are the foundations of individual and social identity, which influence the environment at all levels of health care. According to historical and cultural patterns, people learn to relate to their bodies. This situation reveals contrasts in the way bodily functions, and thus health and illness, are conceptualized, used, and valued. In fact, a person's sexuality covers a particularly conflictive field, as it focuses on aspects defined as basic, constructed according to sociocultural concepts, and, therefore, modifiable. Therefore, health promotion understood as a proposal for empowering individuals, families, and communities about their perception of their life and health within their cultural, ethnic, religious, and care context, and influenced by their state of health, becomes important. To this end, we propose the adoption of transdisciplinary approaches that prioritize relational analysis studies in the context of health scenarios for the development of public policies framed in the culture of care, its evolution, economy, and management, highlighting the gender perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of inequalities. Every day, people are born to intensely degrading realities that curb their opportunities of success and perpetrate a vicious cycle of poverty. "The Role of Institutions: Devising Mechanisms for an Inclusive World" explores how the institutional framework contributes to the maintenance or reduction of such inequalities, analyzing the impacts – both positive and negative – of existing institutions in specific scenarios. Each of the eight articles approaches a pressing theme of the international agenda – including rule of law; fiscal responsibility; health conditions in refugees' camps; disaster risk management; labor standards; gender-based structural violence; nuclear weapons control; and state failure –, analyzing the role institutions play on the definition of the fate of countries and their citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative, state-of-the-art Handbook provides an authoritative overview of issues within sexuality education, coupled with ground-breaking discussion of emerging and unconventional insights in the field. With 32 contributions from 12 countries it definitively traces the landscape of issues, theories and practices in sexuality education globally. These rich and multidisciplinary essays are written by renowned critical sexualities studies experts and rising stars in this area and grouped under four main areas: Global Assemblages of Sexuality Education Sexualities Education in Schools Sexual Cultures, Entertainment Media and Communication Technologies Re-animating What Else Sexuality Education Research Can Do, Be and Become Importantly, this Handbook does not equate sexuality education with safer sex education nor understand this subject as confined to school based programmes. Instead, sexuality education is understood more broadly and to occur in spaces as diverse as community settings and entertainment media, and via communication technologies. It is an essential and comprehensive reference resource for academics, students and researchers of sexuality education that both demarcates the field and stimulates critical discussion of its edges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did far-right, hateful and anti-democratic ideologies become so successful in many societies in Europe? This volume analyses the paradoxical roles sexual politics have played in this process and reveals that the incoherence and untruthfulness in right-wing populist, ultraconservative and far-right rhetorics of fear are not necessarily signs of weakness. Instead, the authors show how the far right can profit from its own incoherence by generating fear and creating discourses of crisis for which they are ready to offer simple solutions. In studies on Poland, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Austria, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, France, Sweden and Russia, the ways far-right ideologies travel and take root are analysed from a multi-disciplinary perspective, including feminist and LGBTQI reactions. Understanding how hateful and antidemocratic ideologies enter the very centre of European societies is a necessary premise for developing successful counterstrategies.
