O introdutor do termo foi John Locke, o qual, ao pensar sobre o corpo e o movimento conduzido no processo de estruturação equilibrada do ser humano, introduziu a expressão educação física, isto é, da educação através do corpo humano em acção. Logo foi seguido por médicos atentos aos problemas da saúde e da sociedade, pedagogos interessados no processo da educação de crianças e jovens e, pouco depois, por militares cuja preparação e actividade exigiam aprumo e disciplina. Uns e outros aventuraram-se na criação e recriação de encadeamentos sistemáticos de movimentos livres ou de sistemas de ginástica que preencheram o território das questões formativas. Os finais da década de oitenta do século vinte confrontaram a educação física, os seus princípios e fins, com o desporto de competição, os seus métodos de treino e as suas finalidades em função de um rendimento exigente. E, de facto, abriram à educação física outras vias de desenvolvimento até aí impensadas e, portanto, inexploradas. Neste trabalho que publicamos, apresenta-se um conjunto de abordagens inovadoras e destemidas que revelam a capacidade da educação física, na terceira década do século vinte um, de repensar a si própria, oferecer formas de se recrear, maneiras de actuar originais que correspondem às preocupações, necessidades e aos complexos meios científicos e técnicos da sociedade actual.
