Book excerpt: Brazil and China constituted the economic and political bloc of the Brics (which also brings together India, Russia and South Africa), defending a new world order based on solidarity, inclusive economic development, in the search for environmentally sustainable growth alternatives, in respect for the self-determination of peoples and in the construction of Democracy. This effort will be more solid if it is accompanied by cultural, social and academic integration between these emerging nations, and the debate cycle and its product, this book, are part of this effort to bring researchers closer to ours universities and research centers.

Book excerpt: The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) project is research funded by the United States Air Force, the Navy and the University of Alaska with the official purpose of understanding, simulating and controlling ionospheric processes that could change the operation of communications and surveillance systems. It started in 1993 with a series of experiments over twenty years. It is similar to numerous existing ionospheric heaters around the world, and has a large number of diagnostic instruments with the aim of improving the scientific knowledge of ionospheric dynamics. There is speculation that the HAARP project is a US weapon capable of controlling the climate by causing floods and other catastrophes. In 1999, the European Parliament issued a resolution stating that HAARP was manipulating the environment for military purposes, calling for an assessment of the project by Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA), the European Union body responsible for studying and assessing new technologies. In 2002, the Russian Parliament presented President Vladimir Putinwith a report signed by 90 deputies from the International Relations and Defence committees, claiming that HAARP was a new geophysical weapon capable of manipulating the earth s lower atmosphere. In May 2014 it was announced by the US Air Force that the project would be terminated. The project was created by US Senator Ted Stevens, when he exercised great control over the US defense budget.

From Indonesia to the Spokane Reservation and El Salvador to Estonia, these chapters reveal a striking diversity of approaches to political socialization in varying cultural and institutional contexts. By bringing to bear the methodological, conceptual and theoretical perspectives of qualitative research, this book adds important new voices to one of educationOs most critical debates: how to form democratic citizens in a changing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the involvement of nineteen women in an emancipatory literacy program conducted under the administration of Paulo Freire in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The study presents the classroom experiences of these women and the psychological, cognitive, and behavioral changes they undergo over a three-year period. Their low limited acquisition of literacy and their limited reading and writing practices are explored in the context of their circumscribed environment of poverty, living in families and societies that place definite boundaries and expectations regarding the everyday tasks they must perform. The analysis of the women's individual experiences is linked to a political and structural inquiry into the grassroots groups and the political party implementing the literacy program. In this way, contradictions, ambiguities, and antagonisms within and among social forces regarding literacy for social change are made transparent. Literacy acquisition is shown to be a process fraught with multiple exogenous demands that distance these women from the constant exposure to print required for literacy competence.

Book excerpt: This document was published by Alpha, a research program specializing in alternative, experimental approaches to adult basic education. It is an attempt to widen the field and examine the relationship between the micro and macro levels, between the diversity of different practices and the major policy orientations that foster or limit this diversity. Section 1 contains "A Political Review of International Literacy Meetings in Industrialized Countries, 1981-94" (Jean-Paul Hautecoeur). Section 2 presents six contributions from Central and Eastern Europe: "The Gypsy Minority in Bulgaria: Literacy Policy and Community Development (1985-95)" (Elena Marushiakova, Vesselin Popov); "Basic Education in Romania" (Florentina Anghel); "Adult Basic Education in Albania" (Andon Dede);"Andragogic Summer School: Towards Improving Literacy and Local Development" (Dusana Findeisen); "Basic Education and Community Development in Poland" (Ewa Solarczyk-Ambrokik); and "Adult Basic Education Environments from Discursive Interplay among Legislature, Economics, and Institutions" (Stanislav Hubik). Section 3 consists of five contributions from the European Union: "Keeping Alive Alternative Visions" (Mary Hamilton); "The Institutional Environment of the Struggle against Illiteracy in France" (Pierre Freynet); "30 Years of Literacy Work in Belgium: Where Has It Got Us?" (Catherine Stercq); "Skills, Schools, and Social Practices: Limits to the Basic Skills Approach in Adult Basic Education in Flanders" (Nathalie Druine, Danny Wildemeersch); and "Role of the State in Basic Adult Education: The Portuguese Example" (Maria Jose Bruno Esteves). Section 4 presents five chapters from North America: "Getting Clear about Where We Are Going: Results-Oriented Accountability as a Tool for System Reform" (Sondra G. Stein); "This is a School. 'We Want to Go to School.' Institutional Social Responsibility and Worker Education" (Sheryl Greenwood Gowen); "Facing Training and Basic Education: One Unionized Workplace Experience" (Jorge Garcia-Orgales); "Literacy, the Institutional Environment, and Democracy" (Serge Wagner); and "Making Up for Lost Time: Rescuing the Basics of Adult Education" (Enrique Pieck). The final chapter in Section 5, "Basic Education: Defending What Has Been Achieved and Opening Up Prospects" (Jean-Paul Hautecoeur) is a synopsis of the main propositions presented in the document. Book excerpt: This book proposes a method to evaluate the work of teachers acting in a very specific educational context: graduate programs at higher education institutions. There are many publications on the field of measurement and evaluation of teaching practices, but these studies are usually conducted at the undergraduate level and ignore the nuances of teaching practices at the graduate level. Should professors demonstrate the same skills when they teach in undergraduate programs as they do when they teach in graduate programs? Is it appropriate to use the same assessment tools both at the undergraduate and the graduate levels? Do the teaching practices evolve the same way at the graduate and undergraduate levels? The book intends to answer these questions by introducing a methodological approach to find the relevant variables that are the foundation of professional practices at the graduate level as determined by the scientific community and through the analysis of the stakeholders’ perceptions. The proposed methodological approach combines quantitative and qualitative research techniques to identify and explain, within a mixed-method framework, the most important factors that lead to teaching quality at graduate level. Therefore, How to Evaluate Teaching Practices in Graduate Practices will be a valuable resource for students, university professors and educational administrators interested in quality assurance processes in higher education institutions.

This book was released on 2010-10-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, illiteracy and its elimination were political issues important enough to figure in the fall of governments (as in Brazil in 1964), the building of nations (in newly independent African countries in the 1970s), and the construction of a revolutionary order (Nicaragua in 1980). This political biography of Paulo Freire (1921-97), who played a crucial role in shaping international literacy education, also presents a thoughtful examination of the volatile politics of literacy during the Cold War. A native of Brazil's impoverished northeast, Freire developed adult literacy training techniques that involved consciousness-raising, encouraging peasants and newly urban peoples to see themselves as active citizens who could transform their own lives. Freire's work for state and national government agencies in Brazil in the early 1960s eventually aroused the suspicion of the Brazilian military, as well as of U.S. government aid programs. Political pressures led to Freire's brief imprisonment, following the military coup of 1964, and then to more than a decade and a half in exile. During this period, Freire continued his work in Chile, Nicaragua, and postindependence African countries, as well as in Geneva with the World Council of Churches and in the United States at Harvard University. Andrew J. Kirkendall's evenhanded appraisal of Freire's pioneering life and work, which remains influential today, gives new perspectives on the history of the Cold War, the meanings of radicalism, and the evolution of the Left in Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new reality of teaching and learning through technology is continually on the rise creating the need for governments, organizations, teachers, students, and families to adapt. Students are realizing the need to become more autonomous, parents are having to become more present, and teachers are assuming new roles in virtual education. Although this new era of education is marked by innovation at all levels, most of these changes have not been thoroughly planned or structured, thus creating a difficult experience for all the educational stakeholders. Impact of Digital Transformation in Teacher Training Models conducts a critical discussion on teacher preparedness in the digital transformation of teaching practices. It promotes practitioner reflections on the role of institutional policies, teacher digital literacy, the digital divide, and how the ongoing digital transformation of society will induce the need for a paradigm shift in teacher training models. Covering topics such as emergency remote education, emerging pedagogies, and massive open online courses, this book is an essential resource for policymakers, government officials, education administration, pre-service teachers, educators, researchers, and academicians.
