Book excerpt: Nestled by rows of luscious grapevines, wineries evoke images of fine living few other places can rival. The spirit of each winery is as distinctive as the wines it produces. With a multitude of unique design touches, each one creates a sense of place, and a charming invitation to slow down and savor a way of life deeply rooted in growing cycles and the seasons. This lavishly illustrated compendium showcases the new wave of winery buildings. This school of design takes its lead from architect Herzog de Meuron's 1997 design for Dominus Winery, setting a trend away from the rustic and embracing the sleekest contemporary ethos. Since then leading wineries have commissioned chic tasting rooms and spectacular facilities by architectural luminaries such as Santiago Calatrava, Rafael Moneo, Zaha Hadid, Frank O. Gehry and Norman Foster. ? A unique gift for the wine connoisseur and design devotee alike ? A compelling look at all the design elements that make up the world's most beautiful wineries

Book Synopsis Mediating the Past by : Alyssa A. Lonner

Book excerpt: As one of the most widely read German authors of the nineteenth century, Gustav Freytag (1816-1895) continues to be associated with the middle class and the progress it enjoyed. Yet while his best-selling novel Soll und Haben (1855) and its lesser-known successor Die verlorene Handschrift (1864) owed their vast commercial success largely to their buoyant message of bourgeois advancement, they simultaneously devote significant attention to elements of traditional German society. In exploring Freytag's dual roles as both a novelist of contemporary middle-class life and a cultural historian, this book uncovers the author's divergent - and ostensibly conflicting - desire both to embrace progress and commemorate the past. Investigating his literary engagement with three central elements of Germany's historical identity - the pervasiveness of folk beliefs, a strong identification with rural life, and the continued presence of the aristocracy - this study shows how Freytag attempts to locate these constituents of pre-industrial Germany in a modern, industrial nation, and in doing so contributes to a historically anchored national identity in which material and political progress coexist with a rich heritage and ancient traditions.

Book Synopsis Eurythmy, Its Birth and Development by : Rudolf Steiner
Download or read book Eurythmy, Its Birth and Development written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2019-10-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘This gave my mother the opportunity of mentioning to Dr Steiner an idea… Could one affect the physical body in a healing, strengthening and regulating way through certain rhythmical movements of the etheric body – which after all was the centre of all that was rhythmical – as well as of health and illness? Dr Steiner not only enthusiastically affirmed this possibility, but spontaneously declared himself ready to give the necessary directions which I could then work out with my mother’s help.’ – Lory Maier-Smits Alongside original material by Rudolf and Marie Steiner, this volume features unique first-hand accounts of the birth of the art of eurythmy by a number of its early students and practitioners. The practical and artistic stages of its development are chronicled in detail, alongside reports from the first public performance onwards. Rudolf Steiner offers inspiration to the original eurythmists to make their own discoveries – to perceive and fashion in movement their creative ‘inner voice’. The artistic principles are established for later development and elaboration, to reveal and foster human creativity in many poetic and musical contexts. Through the text, links between eurythmy and temple-dances, that accompanied ancient initiations, gradually emerge. The impulse to dance is rediscovered as inherent in the ‘lost Word’, or the primordial root language still available in ‘genetic etymology’– the sounds of speech used in all languages. Music eurythmy, we learn, did not start from dancing, but from the archetypal structure of the musical system. Consequently, we can witness directly how an eloquent performing art can properly develop when technique and inspiration meet. The text is supported by extensive supplementary material, including eurythmy forms, a chronological survey, notes and indexes.

Book excerpt: This volume fills an important gap in research on the refugees from Nazism who settled in Britain, by giving a full and wide-ranging account of the organisations that they established. The contributions cover these organisations chronologically, from those that did not outlast the war to those still active today, and in terms of their function, as cultural or religious institutions, as historical resources for the study of Nazism and the refugees, or as all-purpose representative refugee associations. Any scholar or student working in this field needs to have an understanding of the organisations that were and are so characteristic of the refugee community.
