Book Synopsis John Dee's Five Books of Mystery by : John Dee
Download or read book John Dee's Five Books of Mystery written by John Dee and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in a hidden compartment of an old chest long after his death, the secret writings of John Dee, one of the leading scientists and occultists of Elizabethan England, record in minute detail his research into the occult. Dee concealed his treatises on the nature of humankind's contact with angelic realms and languages throughout his life, and they were nearly lost forever. In his brief biography of John Dee, Joseph Peterson calls him a "true Renaissance man"? detailing his work in astronomy, mathematics, navigation, the arts, astrology, and the occult sciences. He was even thought to be the model for Shakespeare's Prospero. All this was preparation for Dee's main achievement: five books, revealed and transcribed between March 1582 and May 1583, bringing to light mysteries and truths that scholars and adepts have been struggling to understand and use ever since. These books detail his system for communicating with the angels, and reveal that the angels were interested in and involved with the exploration and colonization of the New World, and in heralding in a new age or new world order. While Dee's influence was certainly felt in his lifetime, his popularity has grown tremendously since. His system was used and adapted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and subsequently by Aleister Crowley. This new edition of John Dee's Five Books of Mystery is by far the most accessible and complete published to date. Peterson has translated Latin terms and added copious footnotes, putting the instructions and references into context for the modern reader.

Book Synopsis Christian Origins by : Richard Horsley
Download or read book Christian Origins written by Richard Horsley and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with a time when "Christians" were moving towards separation from the movement's Jewish origins, this inaugural volume of A People's History of Christianity tells "the people's story" by gathering together evidence from the New Testament texts, archaeology, and other contemporary sources. Of particular interest to the distinguished group of scholar-contributors are the often overlooked aspects of the earliest "Christian" consciousness: How, for example, did they manage to negotiate allegiances to two social groups? How did they deal with crucial issues of wealth and poverty? What about the participation of slaves and women in these communities? How did living in the shadow of the Roman Empire color their religious experience and economic values?

Book excerpt: Urbanization is a fact of Canadian life. With approximately 80 per cent of Canadians residing in cities, it is imperative that students understand the issues associated with urban living. Urban Canada approaches the study of city life in two ways. A demographic approach examines the movements of people to cities, while a socio-cultural one emphasizes the pervasiveness of urban-oriented thinking, culture, and organization within society . Urban Canada provides a succinct discussion of urban issues from a uniquely Canadian perspective.

Book Synopsis Investigating Classroom Discourse by : Steve Walsh
Download or read book Investigating Classroom Discourse written by Steve Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing language use and interaction as the basis of good teaching and learning, this invaluable book equips teachers and researchers with the tools to analyze classroom discourse and move towards more effective instruction. Presenting an overview of existing approaches to describing and analyzing classroom discourse, Steve Walsh identifies the principal characteristics of classroom language in the contexts of second language classrooms, primary and secondary classrooms, and higher education settings. A distinct feature of the book are the classroom recordings and reflective feedback interviews from a sample group of teachers that Walsh uses to put forward SETT (Self Evaluation of Teacher Talk) as a framework for examining discourse within the classroom. This framework is used to identify different modes of discourse, which are employed by teachers and students, to increase awareness of the importance of interaction, and to maximize learning opportunities. This book will appeal to applied linguists, teachers and researchers of TESOL, as well as practitioners on MEd or taught doctorate programmes.
Book Synopsis The Lost Art of Enochian Magic by : John DeSalvo
Download or read book The Lost Art of Enochian Magic written by John DeSalvo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to Dr. John Dee’s angelic magic • Contains instructions for performing Enochian magic meditations • Examines John Dee’s original diaries from the British Library Enochian magic is a powerful, ancient system for opening portals to heavenly realms and enabling the ascent to God. The basis for many of the modern systems of magic, including the Golden Dawn, Enochian magic is named after the biblical prophet Enoch, who received the same knowledge and wisdom that was later conveyed to the astrologer to the court of Queen Elizabeth I, Dr. John Dee, by angels in the 16th century. In The Lost Art of Enochian Magic John DeSalvo traces the history of magic--from the earliest civilizations of the Akadians and Egyptians through the Greco-Roman period and up to the present time--to reveal how magic has penetrated and influenced our religious beliefs and practices today. Through his unprecedented investigation into the angelic magic of Dr. John Dee, during which time he deciphered Dee’s original phonetic notations in the margins of Dee’s 16th-century diaries, DeSalvo learned to properly reproduce the “Enochian calls,” which act like mantras in opening higher realms and invoking angels, key to this type of magical practice. DeSalvo shows how to use Enochian magic for personal spiritual development and also as protection from negative energies.

Book Synopsis John Dee's Library Catalogue by : Richard Julian Roberts
Download or read book John Dee's Library Catalogue written by Richard Julian Roberts and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dee (1527-1609) has emerged as one of the most influential figures in the intellectual history of Tudor England. Though best known in his own time as a mathematician, he had a host of other interests (including navigation, astrology and astronomy, cabbala, alchemy, paracelsian medicine, and Welsh history) and was one of the first scholars to advocate collecting manuscripts from the dissolved monastic libraries. Indeed his own library was perhaps the largest assembled in England by one man before 1600. This study, which includes a facsimile of the detailed catalogue of 1583, recounts for the first time the growth of Dee's library, the raid made upon it during his absence in Poland, and its dispersal after his death. The book also describes the location of his surviving books and manuscripts.

Book Synopsis De Septem Secundeis by : Johannes Trithemius
Download or read book De Septem Secundeis written by Johannes Trithemius and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johannes Trithemius is best known for his steganographia, but his less notorious works are no less interesting. Here, in de septem secundeis, we have a fusion of history and occultism, regarding celestial and angelic categorizations, used to predict the future as well as correspond past events to the different characteristics of the secondary causes- the seven angels with their seven planets. Trithemius, in his age, thus delivered this knowledge to then-emperor Maximilian of the Holy Roman Empire, and this same system can be expanded infinitely into the past or future.
