Download or read book Ed and the Shirtmakers written by Andy Seed and published by Badger Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed needs to make some money quickly! He has run out of t-shirt design ideas and needs to think up some new ones. Where on Earth is he going to come up with these new ideas? This series is based around famous fairy tales, but not in the form the reader might expect. These tales have been tweaked to enchant and amuse a modern audience, including a princess who prefers frogs to princes, an intergalactic Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks the vandal, a ragtag band of characters forming a superhero league and more. The balanced combination of low word count with imaginative plots ensures that reluctant readers are stimulated and drawn in to stories that they can realistically comprehend, providing much needed confidence going forwards.

Download or read book Murakami T written by Haruki Murakami and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international literary icon opens his eclectic closet: Here are photographs of Murakami’s extensive and personal T-shirt collection, accompanied by essays that reveal a side of the writer rarely seen by the public. Many of Haruki Murakami's fans know about his massive vinyl record collection (10,000 albums!) and his obsession with running, but few have heard about a more intimate passion: his T-shirt collecting. In Murakami T, the famously reclusive novelist shows us his T-shirts—from concert shirts to never-worn whiskey-themed Ts, and from beloved bookstore swag to the shirt that inspired the iconic short story "Tony Takitani." These photographs are paired with short, frank essays that include Murakami's musings on the joy of drinking Guinness in local pubs across Ireland, the pleasure of eating a burger upon arrival in the United States, and Hawaiian surf culture in the 1980s. Together, these photographs and reflections reveal much about Murakami's multifaceted and wonderfully eccentric persona.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for THE TRAVELS OF A T-SHIRT IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY "Engrossing . . . (Rivoli) goes wherever the T-shirt goes, and there are surprises around every corner . . . full of memorable characters and vivid scenes." —Time "An engaging and illuminating saga. . . . Rivoli follows her T-shirt along its route, but that is like saying that Melville follows his whale. . . . Her nuanced and fair-minded approach is all the more powerful for eschewing the pretense of ideological absolutism, and her telescopic look through a single industry has all the makings of an economics classic." —The New York Times "Rarely is a business book so well written that one would gladly stay up all night to finish it. Pietra Rivoli's The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is just such a page-turner." —CIO magazine "Succeeds admirably . . . T-shirts may not have changed the world, but their story is a useful account of how free trade and protectionism certainly have." —Financial Times "[A] fascinating exploration of the history, economics, and politics of world trade . . . The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is a thought-provoking yarn that exhibits the ugly, the bad, and the good of globalization, and points to the unintended positive consequences of the clash between proponents and opponents of free trade." —Star-Telegram (Fort Worth) "Part travelogue, part history, and part economics, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy is ALL storytelling, and in the grand style. A must-read." —Peter J. Dougherty, Senior Economics Editor, Princeton University Press author of Who's Afraid of Adam Smith? "A readable and evenhanded treatment of the complexities of free trade . . . As Rivoli repeatedly makes clear, there is absolutely nothing free about free trade except the slogan." —San Francisco Chronicle
Download or read book Sweet and Clean? written by Susan North and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sweet and Clean? challenges the widely held beliefs on bathing and cleanliness in the past. For over thirty years, the work of the French historian, George Vigarello, has been hugely influential on early modern European social history, describing an aversion to water and bathing, and the use of linen underwear as the sole cleaning agent for the body. However, these concepts do not apply to early modern England. Sweet and Clean? analyses etiquette and medical literature, revealing repeated recommendations to wash or bathe in order to clean the skin. Clean linen was essential for propriety but advice from medical experts was contradictory. Many doctors were convinced that it prevented the spread of contagious diseases, but others recommended flannel for undergarments, and a few thought changing a fever patient's linens was dangerous. The methodology of material culture helps determine if and how this advice was practiced. Evidence from inventories, household accounts and manuals, and surviving linen garments tracks underwear through its life-cycle of production, making, wearing, laundering, and final recycling. Although the material culture of washing bodies is much sparser, other sources, such as the Old Bailey records, paint a more accurate picture of cleanliness in early modern England than has been previously described. The contrasting analyses of linen and bodies reveal what histories material culture best serves. Finally, what of the diseases-plague, smallpox, and typhus-that cleanliness of body and clothes were thought to prevent? Did following early modern medical advice protect people from these illnesses?

Download or read book Immortal written by Diana Hewson and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A personal account of one woman's experiences and revelations of an afterlife following her husband's sudden death ... an expression of the depth of love that bound two people together even beyond death." Kirkus Reviews **************** Diana Hewsons husband, Ed, passed away suddenly of a heart attack in May of 2003. They were extremely close and had somewhat isolated themselves from friends since they mainly enjoyed just being together. They had no children and no close relatives. Diana was alone except for some good friends. Initially, she had a hard time comprehending what had happened, but she knew that it was up to her to proceed with life. Diana and Ed had been married for thirty-four years. They were not religious and they did not believe in life after death. When Ed did die, several close friends suggested that Ed would be communicating since they were so close. Diana was appreciative of their words and thoughts but did not believe them. Then unexplainable things began to happen. And about four months after his passing, Ed managed to make Diana realize they were right. Ed was still there and communicating. This is Dianas amazing story of how she learned that when someone close dies, it is not an end to the relationship. The relationship merely changes form. She now knows there is life after death. Diana wrote this book to help others work through the grief from losing a loved one by understanding there is life after death and we are all truly immortal.
