Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were to re-examine sediment toxicity at sites sampled previously on the Athabasca River, including sites in the oil sands area, and to conduct toxicity testing on a number of additional sites on the Athabasca, Smoky, and Peace rivers. Investigators tested suspended and bottom sediment samples using four species of freshwater benthic invertebrates in chronic exposure studies. Endpoints measured included survival, growth (amphipod, chironomid, and mayfly) and reproduction (oligochaete worm). Test results were compared with those using standard reference sediment samples for biological quality assurance.

Reviews the characteristics of the northern river basins and their peoples, the organisation of the Study, and major findings in the areas of environmental overview, use of aquatic resources, traditional knowledge, flow regulation, fish distribution and habitat, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, contaminants, drinking water, ecosystem health, modelling, human health, and cumulative effects. Recommendations by the Study Board, First Nations, and scientific advisors regarding such issues as basin management, monitoring, research, public participation, and a successor organisation are then presented. Also includes a summary of opinions, suggestions, and recommendations expressed at 17 community workshops held throughout the northern river basins area.

Book excerpt: Examines the mechanisms of natural riverine sediment production in the Northern River Basins Study area, together with the routine data for suspended sediment in the area's rivers, as background for the examination of sediment-associated contaminants. Topics examined include: the causative mechanisms and boundary conditions affecting the sediment regime, including area topography, geology, and hydrology; availability and adequacy of data on suspended sediments in the area; time trends of fluvial suspended sediment dynamics on a seasonal (open water and ice regime) and annual basis, over the long term, and in critical events; sediment sources, pathways, and fates, and sediment dynamics at basin-wide, reach, and site levels; sediment quality, including sediment-associated characteristics of pulp mill effluents and sediment-contaminant relationships; and implications for sediment-associated contaminants. Recommendations are made for monitoring and assessment of the sediment component of the area's ecosystem.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the analytical results and spatial trends for the following contaminants in bottom sediment samples collected from northern Alberta rivers in 1994-95: polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, resin acids, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated phenolics, polychlorinated biphenyls, extractable organic halides, toxaphene, and mercury. Sampling locations were chosen to provide broad coverage of both the Athabasca and Peace river basins, coverage of key mixing zones downstream from four pulp mills, and replication with locations sampled previously. The 1994-95 survey objectives included: determination of within-site variability in bottom sediment contamination; testing of the assumption that the sand fraction is not an important repository of contaminants; and providing a data set for comparison with earlier bottom sediment collections in 1988-89 and 1992.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book intends to be an alert to the fact that the curve measuring environmental costs against the economic benefits of capitalism has irreversibly entered into a negative phase. The prospect of an environmental collapse has been evidenced by the sciences and the humanities since the 1960s. Today, it imposes its urgency. This collapse differs from past civilizations in that it is neither local nor just civilizational. It is global and occurs at the broadest level of the biosphere, accelerated by the convergence of different socio-environmental crises, such as: Earth energy imbalance, climate change and global warming Sea-level rise Decrease and degradation of forests Collapse of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity Floods, droughts, wildfires, and extreme weather events Degradation of soils and water resources Increase in pollution caused by fossil fuels and coal Increase in waste production and industrial intoxication The book is divided in two parts. In the first part it presents a comprehensive review of scientific data to show the already visible effects of each of the different environmental crises and its consequences to human life on Earth. In the second part, Luiz Marques critically discusses what he calls the three concentric illusions that prevent us from realizing the gravity of the current socio-environmental crises: the illusion of a sustainable capitalism, the illusion that economic growth is still capable of providing more well-being and the anthropocentric illusion. Finally, Marques argues that "fitting" back into the biosphere will only be possible if we dismantle the expansive socioeconomic gear that has shaped our societies since the 16th century by moving from a Social Contract to a Natural Contract, which takes into account the whole biosphere. According to him, the future society will be post-capitalist or it will not be a complex society, and even perhaps, we must fear, no society at all. “This book is backed up with the latest and best science and has made the complexities understandable for the average reader, all in a context of hope for the future.” - William J. Ripple, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Ecology, Director of the Alliance of World Scientists, Oregon State University

Book excerpt: Describes field and analytical methods, and presents results, from a reach-specific study of 200 kilometres of the Athabasca River between Hinton and Whitecourt. This section of the river receives municipal effluent from Hinton in addition to pulp mill effluent. Results are presented for water, suspended sediment, and bottom sediment samples collected in 1992. Contaminants studied include dioxins, furans, chlorinated phenolics, resin acids, organochlorine pesticides, and metals. The data presented will be incorporated into a synthesis report addressing the distribution of contaminants within northern Alberta rivers.

It presents an integrated ecosystem approach by detailing effective assessment methods, considerations, and effects to each major component of marine and freshwater systems, including the benthos, plankton, and fish communities. The approaches emphasize defining habitat conditions (physical and chemical), toxicant bioavailability, factors influencing toxicity (lab and field), biomarkers, acute and chronic toxicity, study design, collection methods, and EPA management strategies. The book also explains how to integrate the assessments. Sediment Toxicity Assessment will be useful to to all environmental managers, environmental scientists, ecotoxicologists, environmental regulators, aquatic ecologists, environmental contractors and consultants, instructors, students, conservation commissions, and environmental activist organizations.
