Book excerpt: Waste and By-Products in Cement-Based Materials: Innovative Sustainable Materials for a Circular Economy covers various recycled materials, by-products and wastes that are suitable for the manufacture of materials within the spectrum of so-called cement-based materials (CBM). Sections cover wastes for replacement of aggregates in CBM, focus on the application of wastes for the replacement of clinker and mineral additions in the manufacture of binders, discuss the optimization process surrounding the manufacture of recycled concrete and mortars, multi-recycling, advanced radiological studies, optimization of self-compacting concrete, rheology properties, corrosion prevention, and more. Final sections includes a review of real-scale applications that have been made in recent years of cement-based materials in roads, railway superstructures, buildings and civil works, among others, as well as a proposal of new regulations to promote the use of waste in the manufacture of CBM. - Favors the institution of the circular economy in the construction industry by eliminating the barriers that currently prevent industrial waste from being valorized by its inclusion in CBM design - Features an in-depth exploration of the strengths and weaknesses of new raw materials and their application to CBMs - Features real-scale applications that have been made in recent years of cement-based materials in roads, railway superstructures, buildings and civil works, among others - Presents current, state-of-the-art, and future-prospects for the use of industrial waste in CBMs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 3rd Edition of the Reinforced Plastics Handbook the authors have continued the approach of the late John Murphy, author of the first and second editions. The book provides a compendium of information on every aspect of materials, processes, designs and construction.Fiber-reinforced plastics are a class of materials in which the basic properties of plastics are given mechanical reinforcement by the addition of fibrous materials. The wide choice of plastics resin matrices and the correspondingly wide choice of reinforcing materials mean that the permutations are virtually unlimited. But the optimum properties of resin and reinforcement cannot be obtained unless there is an effective bond between the two, and this is the continuing objective of reinforced plastics production, design and processing. - New 3rd edition of this comprehensive practical manual - This is a 'bible' for all those involved in the reinforced plastics industry, whether manufacturers, specifiers, designers or end-users - Has been completely revised and updated to reflect all the latest developments in the industry

Download or read book Technology Innovation for the Circular Economy written by Nabil Nasr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY The book comprises 56 peer-reviewed chapters comprehensively covering in-depth areas of circular economy design, planning, business models, and enabling technologies. Some of the greatest opportunities for innovation in the circular economy are in remanufacturing, refurbishment, reuse, and recycling. Critical to its growth, however, are developments in product design approaches and the manufacturing business model that are often met with challenges in the current, largely linear economies of today’s global manufacturing chains. The conference hosted by the REMADE Institute in Rochester, NY, brought together U.S. and international researchers, industry engineers, technologists, and policymakers, to discuss the myriad intertwining issues relating to the circular economy. This book consists of 56 chapters in 10 distinct parts covering broad areas of research and applications in the circular economy area. The first four parts explore the system level work related to circular economy approaches, models and advancements including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to guide implementation, as well as design for circularity approaches. Mechanical and chemical recycling technologies follow, highlighting some of the most advanced research in those areas. Next, innovation in remanufacturing is addressed with descriptions of some of the most advanced work in this field. This is followed by tire remanufacturing and recycling, highlighting innovative technologies in addressing the volume of end-of-use tires. Pathways to net-zero emissions in manufacturing of materials concludes the book, with a focus on industrial decarbonization. Audience This book has a wide audience in academic institutes, business professionals and engineers in a variety of manufacturing industries. It will also appeal to economists and policymakers working on the circular economy, clean tech investors, industrial decision-makers, and environmental professionals.

Book Synopsis Unique Polymeric Fiber and Fiber Delivery Systems for the Economic Preparation of High-fiber Content Concrete with Superior Physical Properties by : Billy D. Neeley
Download or read book Unique Polymeric Fiber and Fiber Delivery Systems for the Economic Preparation of High-fiber Content Concrete with Superior Physical Properties written by Billy D. Neeley and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results from an investigation of a new polymer fiber and unique delivery system for charging fibers into concrete mixtures. The straight Polyolefin fibers are available in two sizes: (1) 0.63 mm in diameter and 50 mm long, and (2) 0.38 mm in diameter and 25 mm long. Each of the two sizes of fibers is packaged in bundles approximately 50 mm in diameter. Each. bundle is encased with paper tape bound with a water-soluble glue. The fibers are charged into the concrete mixture in mass. Approximately 3 to 10 min of mixing time is necessary to uniformly distribute the fibers throughout the concrete mixture, depending upon the fiber content, consistency of the concrete mixture, and the type of mixer being used. Fresh and hardened properties were evaluated in mixtures containing up to 15 kg/cu m. The results indicate that concrete mixtures with the Polyolefin fibers can be produced having adequate workability and finishability if proportioned properly. Addition of the Polyolefin fibers does not significantly influence the compressive nor first-crack flexural strength, freezing-and-thawing resistance, drying shrinkage, nor the chloride permeability of concrete mixtures. However, the presence of the Polyolefin fibers does influence the post-crack behavior of concrete mixtures. Impact resistance and flexural toughness are improved as the fiber loading increases. A 6,100-m whitetopping demonstration project was constructed on a heavily traveled interstate in Mississippi. The whitetopping was 100 mm thick. Details of the specifications, construction, and early-time performance are given.

Book Synopsis Integrated Product Development with Fiber-Reinforced Polymers by : David May
Download or read book Integrated Product Development with Fiber-Reinforced Polymers written by David May and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basics of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP). The author presents the material-specific advantages of FRP and the typical areas of their application. The problems created by conventional, non-integrating product development are listed and the author states how these problems are potentially overcome by integrated product development (IPD). In addition, it is explained why IPD is of particular importance for FRP. An approach to IPD for FRP-parts is presented. It is explained step by step how a catalogue of requirements is defined as well as how this basis is used to develop a concept, a design, and a final construction. Simple but effective methods for the selection of fiber materials, semi-finished products and manufacturing processes are highlighted in this book. A concluding chapter describes an approach to techno-economic evaluation. Throughout the book, practical application examples show the reader how to put the gained knowledge into practice.
