Book excerpt: This study examines the current and potential role of economics in soil productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. After examining the status of soil productivity and the contribution of conventional economic analyses, it considers more innovative approaches that enable economics to play a greater role in the planning and evaluation of soil productivity, enhancing measures at farm, national and global level. In the past economics has tended to focus on one factor at a time but many factors affect soil productivity. Decisions, policies and their impact call for a more integrative, participatory analytical approaches capable of weighing various aspects simultaneously. This study highlights how economics can respond to this challenge through the a[application of fresh concepts (e.g. natural capital) and specific techniques (e.g. multi-criteria analysis, green accounting).

This book examines wide variety of ways in which environmental deterioration, in particular soil erosion, can be viewed and the implicit political judgements that often inform them. Using the context of developing countries, where the effects tend to be more acute due to underdevelopment and climatic factors, this work aims to examine this source of uncertainty and make explicit the underlying assumptions in the debate about soil erosion. It also rejects the notion that soil erosion is a politically neutral issue and argues that conservation requires fundamental social change. This title will be of interest to students of environmental and developmental studies.

Agronomic activities on eroding surfaces can give rise to landscapes much different from the original. Research activities in erosion quantification, the findings and how their applications have contributed to soil erosion management are highlighted. A key factor is the community efforts which have been relegated to a top-down approach occasioned by land use, land tenure and technological changes. The system is often a preventive management approach which achieves ecological and economic benefits. This chapter also discusses the indigenous methods of soil conservation and proposes their inclusions for sustainable management. To manage soil erosion in the region, emphasis must be placed on preventive management rather than crisis-management. Such approach will ensure that fewer resources are expended and land is appropriately conserved. To this end, soil can play its many environmental roles adequately.

Depletion and waste of these resources (whether fund, flow or compositetype) have been frequently condemned by laymen, scientific and technical specialists. Econonics as a discipline has only recently influencedthe debate. This thesis contributes to the conservation debate by investigating the extent of soil erosion in Brazil and the legal, research and policy steps that have been taken to combat the problem. It also analyses the adoption of soil erosion control measures and the effects of these measures on the organization, production and income of farms. It uses empirical data collected by the writer during the period February 1980 to March 1981. The abundance of land relative to other factors of production determined a particular path of agricultural development in Brazil, bringing new land into crop production and a constant movement of people towards the new frontier. In this process a rational soil resource disinvestment strategy was followed by the frontiersmen. This was the first step in a constructive process, maximizing individual returns, producing goods and services for consumption and maintaining the national capital in new and more efficient forms. In those regions where erosion control is now desirable due to the closing of the agricultural frontier, the degradation of the physical characteristics of the soil, the costs of externalities, atc. farmers operators may be unwilling to invest in erosion control measures ...
