Book excerpt: China’s emergence as the world’s second largest economy has been driven by more than four decades of explosive growth. To support this expansion, China has required massive expansion in its steel production capacity, which is highly correlated to its demand for iron ore imports. The scale and pace of China’s iron ore demand shock has pushed the global iron ore market into a historical adjustment. Using economic frameworks, this book brings to bare new data and field observations throughout Asia and Africa to investigate how the rapid growth in China’s iron ore demand has affected the organisation and structure of the global iron ore market. The research provides several important contributions to the extant literature including analysis of whether the Big Three Asian market iron ore exporters coordinated to sustain the profits arising from the price boom; estimating the financial impact of the Chinese state’s intervention in iron price negotiations; and addressing the concerns arising from the Chinese state’s provision of cheap financial support for its companies’ iron ore procurement. Offering unique insights into China’s economic rise and the structure of the iron ore market, this book will be relevant to students and scholars of resource economics, and the Australian and Chinese economies.

High levels of investment in China have been a key driver in the strong world demand for minerals and metals over the past decade. The urbanization and industrialization of China has been an important factor behind the increase in domestic demand and high investment growth, while its export sector is also an important source of growth and plays a critical role as a catalyst. Activity in infrastructure, construction, real estate, and automobile manufacturing all contribute to the strong demand for minerals. Over the next five years, the Chinese demand is expected to remain strong, supported by investment and gradually rising consumption rates. However, in the second part of this decade economic growth in China could slow down. For Latin American countries, export receipts should remain strong over the next five years and beyond, given the continued strong demand from China.

After presenting a technical overview describing the technological possesses in use during that period by the steel, the iron ore and the ferrous scrap industries, we describe and analyse, on economic grounds, the market structure and the market forces that shaped the iron and steel industry from the beginning of the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. After analysing the market structure of the iron ore and the steel industry, we argue that bilateral monopoly is an adequate framework to deal with the iron and steel market during that period, and that the steel industry has stronger market power to influence iron ore prices to its advantage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale and pace of China's iron ore demand shock is unprecedented. This study sets out to answer the question of how the rapid growth in China's iron ore demand has impacted on the organisation and structure of the global iron ore market. In this context, it makes a corollary contribution to the analysis of bulk commodity market adjustment and the impact of short-run strategic interventions on long-term market outcomes. To answer the question of how China's growth has impacted the iron ore market, an economic framework is introduced to understand the theoretical structure of a bulk commodity market (like the iron ore market) and how it might be expected to adjust to a positive demand shock under competitive assumptions over the short- and long-run. The market adjustment framework is then applied to understand the historical development of the Asian iron ore market and the structure of the market in the lead up to China's demand shock. The competitiveness of the iron ore supply response to China's demand shock is analysed along with the impact of strategic short-run interventions by the Chinese state. The study examines the impact of Chinese state support for iron ore procurement and the short- and long-run effects of this support on the competitiveness of market outcomes; the examination of Chinese state support for vertical integration into African ore procurement is complemented by field observations of the redevelopment of Liberia's iron ore industry. The study suggests that although the iron ore market adjusted to China's demand shock in a competitive way over the long run, strategic interventions have also shaped outcomes in the market. The analysis concludes that short-run strategic interventions in the iron ore market have not been costless due to the long-run contestability of the market despite the bilateral advantages Australia has with the Asian market, such as geographic closeness. Over the long run, the study shows that supply-side interventions have led to the development of a competitive fringe to the Asian market and recent demand side interventions have led to the collapse of the benchmark pricing mechanism, which subsequently cost Asian importers from Australia considerable bilateral quasi-rents.

Book excerpt: This book provides a broad investigation of various issues in East Asia’s steel industry since the 1980s, including international specialization and trade relations, the sustainable use of resources, technological innovations, and environmental mitigation, alongside a consideration of the rapid growth in Chinese steel industry. Using macro and firm-level data, and case studies based on field research to discuss issues concerning the steel industry in East Asia. In search of an easy understanding, we try to simplify complicated economic models and statistical analyses, and concentrate on policy implications based as much as possible on the results of empirical analyses. We believe that this book will be of interest to policymakers, economists, practitioners and advocates of sustainability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, the objective of this book is to provide a detailed examination of steel production, consumption and trade in East Asia. Specifically, it addresses steel trade and investment environment in East Asia and forecasts steel price movement in the future. In addition, a major focus in this book is the investigation of the metals industry in China, Asia's emerging steel giant. Finally, one chapter of the book also documents the resource sector in Western Australia, one of the world's major sources of iron ore. Rapid economic growth over the past decade has significantly changed the gravity of Asia in the world economy. This trend has particularly been strengthened by the awakening giant, China, whose economy has been growing continuously at a two-digital rate since the late 1970's. Asian countries together have now consumed as much as steel as the developed economies. As a result, Asia as a region has become the key to the expansion of the global steel industry in the future.
