Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Underdevelopment by : S. B. D. de Silva
Download or read book The Political Economy of Underdevelopment written by S. B. D. de Silva and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this reissue deals with the theory of underdevelopment, as Dr. de Silva attempts a synthesis between the internal and external aspects of underdevelopment and, in the Marxist tradition, focuses on the impact of the external on the internal as the dominant reality. Viewing underdevelopment as a problem in the non-transformation to capitalism, this analysis is in terms of the character of the dominant capital and of the dominant classes. Underdevelopment thus encompasses the ‘traditional’ peasant economy and also the export sector where the ‘modernizing’ influence of colonialism was felt. The book finally considers how the contemporary internationalization of capital affected the economies of the Third World.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Underdevelopment in the Global South by : Justin van der Merwe
Download or read book The Political Economy of Underdevelopment in the Global South written by Justin van der Merwe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new theory explaining underdevelopment in the global South and tests whether financial inputs, the government-business-media (GBM) complex and spatiotemporal influences drive human development. Despite the entrance of emerging powers and new forms of aid, trade and investment, international political-economic practices still support well-established systems of capital accumulation, to the detriment of the global South. Global asymmetrical accumulation is maintained by ‘affective’ (consent-forming hegemonic practices) and ‘infrastructural’ (uneven economic exchanges) labours and by power networks. The message for developing countries is that ‘robust’ GBMs can facilitate human development and development is constrained by spatiotemporal limitations. This work theorizes that aid and foreign direct investment should be viewed with caution and that in the global South these investments should not automatically be assumed to be drivers of development.

This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: A, , course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: The basic problem of the Indian economy is the problem of economic development, i.e., providing the minimum means of subsistence to its fast increasing population. Those who have been susceptible to the view that the problem may always evade a solution may take solace from the fact that another neighboring country, viz., China, has done it and has accomplished the task tolerably well. It has shown that the underdeveloped world is not doomed for ever to live in destination. Economic development is an accomplished fact; the need is to create the environment in which development becomes a self-generating process. In this research paper, we will ascertain the features of under-development, trace the forces that cause underdevelopment and identify the factors that promote development.
Book Synopsis The Origins of Economic Inequality Between Nations by : Carlos Ramirez-Faria
Download or read book The Origins of Economic Inequality Between Nations written by Carlos Ramirez-Faria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991 this text provides an incisive analysis of theories concerning the origins of economic inequality between nations. Central to the author’s investigation is the concept of underdevelopment, and a focus on successive Western ‘systems of conceptualisation’ of the relationship between the west and the rest of the world. The first part of the book concerns the Marx/Engels theory of the Asiatic mode of production, and the anti-Imperialist reaction against Eurocentrisim initiated by the theoretical synthesis of J. A. Hobson. This is followed by an examination of the post-World War II era, particularly the evolution of development studies and the differing versions of dependency theory. The author concludes with an analysis of the most recent reactions against economic imperialism and dependency theory, and concludes with an assessment of their implications for the further economic development of today’s Third World.
