The author’s thesis is that this ideal model exists within Pukhtun society when interaction with larger state systems is minimal and in poor economic zones. In this way he posits an opposition between the Tribal Agencies along the border with Afghanistan, where ecological conditions are poor and state influence minimal, and the Settled Areas under state administration where Pukhtun society is forced away from its ideals.

Indigenous Economics lays out an alternative path showing that conscious attention to relationships among humans and the natural world creates flourishing social-ecological economies. Economist Ronald L. Trosper draws on examples from North and South America, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and Australia to argue that Indigenous worldviews centering care and good relationships provide critical and sustainable economic models in a world under increasing pressure from biodiversity loss and climate change. He explains the structure of relational Indigenous economic theory, providing principles based on his own and others’ work with tribal nations and Indigenous communities. Trosper explains how sustainability is created at every level when relational Indigenous economic theory is applied—micro, meso, and macro. Good relationships support personal and community autonomy, replacing the individualism/collectivism dichotomy with relational leadership and entrepreneurship. Basing economies on relationships requires changing governance from the top-down approaches of nation-states and international corporations; instead, each community creates its own territorial relationships, creating plurinational relational states. This population is divided into various social groups i.e. Open, OBC, SC, ST and Minor. The tribals are believed to be the original residents of India. They were driven to forests, hills and other inhospitable regions. In their remote existence, these communities established their own different culture, traditions, languages and administrative structure. While some of them are settled cultivators, several others continual to rest on on shifting cultivation, hunting, food gathering, etc. After independence, such areas were retitled as Scheduled Areas and were comprised in Schedule V and Schedule VI. The essential characteristics for recognition as a Scheduled Tribe are primitive traits, geographical isolation, distinctive culture, shyness of contact with outsiders and economic backwardness. The tribal communities characterize diverse ethnic, religious and linguistic groups. The common features found among all the tribal communities are their solid cultural traditions, kinship, remoteness of their habitats, lack of infrastructure facilities and low level of technical improvement. The tribals continue among the most backward and poorest sections of our populations. This chapter will provide details about an origin, definition & meaning of tribal, demographic profile, development status of tribals in India and various development schemes for tribal in India and Maharashtra.
