Book excerpt: Although common wisdom and much scholarship assume that "big government" gained its foothold in the United States under the auspices of the New Deal during the Great Depression, in fact it was the Second World War that accomplished this feat. Indeed, as the federal government mobilized for war it grew tenfold, quickly dwarfing the New Deal's welfare programs. Warfare State shows how the federal government vastly expanded its influence over American society during World War II. Equally important, it looks at how and why Americans adapted to this expansion of authority. Through mass participation in military service, war work, rationing, price control, income taxation, and the war bond program, ordinary Americans learned to live with the warfare state. They accepted these new obligations because the government encouraged all citizens to think of themselves as personally connected to the battle front, linking their every action to the fate of the combat soldier. As they worked for the American Soldier, Americans habituated themselves to the authority of the government. Citizens made their own counter-claims on the state-particularly in the case of industrial workers, women, African Americans, and most of all, the soldiers. Their demands for fuller citizenship offer important insights into the relationship between citizen morale, the uses of patriotism, and the legitimacy of the state in wartime. World War II forged a new bond between citizens, nation, and government. Warfare State tells the story of this dramatic transformation in American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Sparrow at Home and Abroad: With Some Concluding Remarks Upon Its Usefulness, and Copious References to the Literature of the Subject In offering this little volume to the public, the author feels confident that it will meet with a cordial reception from those who have neither the leisure nor the patience to make such investigations as a work like the present requires. In view of the many heated discussions which the sparrow has produced in this country, tending to show its general usefulness, or wholesale destructiveness, a careful and critical survey of its life-history, detailing the minutest particulars thereof, cannot fail to awaken attention and to command respect. A desire to know the subject in all its bearings, must certainly be of paramount importance. Agriculturists and fruit-growers, mainly of all others, will certainly reap the first fruits of such knowledge. The facts, which the writer has gleaned from various fields of observation, but largely from his own, at infinite pains and expense, subserve, in the highest degree, the interests of humanity, and should not be carelessly set aside or lightly considered. With the disappearance of our highly insectivorous native species before the rapid and insolent advances of their hardy foreign brother, and the consequent multiplication of insect foes, must come the destruction of vegetation and the entailment of untold misery upon man and beast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Food of the Robins and Bluebirds of the United States Few native American birds are more universally cherished than those well-known harbingers of spring, the robins and bluebirds. On esthetic grounds alone they receive full protection, partly from the romance that clusters about them in story and legend and partly because of their graceful shape and movement, bright color and pleasing song, and close association with man and his works. Quick to realize their safety the birds nest and rear their young about human abodes, and at times becomes very abundant, their numbers frequently reaching such proportions that apprehension is felt that they may become dangerous to agriculture and horticulture. A study of their economic status therefore. Is of the utmost importance, especially when it is considered that a bird's reputation is very often affected one way or the other merely by hearsay evidence. Investigation discloses that in addition to their pleasing qualities robins and bluebirds perform a very useful function in reducing the hordes of insect life constantly preying upon the crops of the farmer. In this work a large part of their food consists of insects and they feed their young upon them almost exclusively. It is recognized that birds are one of the necessary checks provided by nature upon the increase of the vast number of insects produced each year; that without them there would be a greater destruction of vegetation; and that certain crops of the farmer now regularly matured would, if raised at all, be raised only with increased di roulty and added labor. Prominent among the insect eaters are the thrushes, the group which includes the robins and bluebirds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
