Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorful history of US research universities, and a market-based theory of their global success. American education has its share of problems, but it excels in at least one area: university-based research. That’s why American universities have produced more Nobel Prize winners than those of the next twenty-nine countries combined. Economist Miguel Urquiola argues that the principal source of this triumph is a free-market approach to higher education. Until the late nineteenth century, research at American universities was largely an afterthought, suffering for the same reason that it now prospers: the free market permits institutional self-rule. Most universities exploited that flexibility to provide what well-heeled families and church benefactors wanted. They taught denominationally appropriate materials and produced the next generation of regional elites, no matter the students’—or their instructors’—competence. These schools were nothing like the German universities that led the world in research and advanced training. The American system only began to shift when certain universities, free to change their business model, realized there was demand in the industrial economy for students who were taught by experts and sorted by talent rather than breeding. Cornell and Johns Hopkins led the way, followed by Harvard, Columbia, and a few dozen others that remain centers of research. By the 1920s the United States was well on its way to producing the best university research. Free markets are not the solution for all educational problems. Urquiola explains why they are less successful at the primary and secondary level, areas in which the United States often lags. But the entrepreneurial spirit has certainly been the key to American leadership in the research sector that is so crucial to economic success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come on a journey of unique perspective; of revolutionary ideas based on an acceptance of our talents, our attributes, and our skills as a nation and people. The time has come for America to adorn its robes of wisdom and emotional healing technology; to make the great leap in consciousness begun on Atlantis. If America wants a world without terror, a world of peace, all we have to do is make the thought, embrace it in love, and it will all happen. It is time for the world's last remaining material superpower to awaken its mental body and thrust the Earth truly into a new age. One devoid of wasting resources on war, one that cultivates the inner knowing we are all interconnected, we are all one people, we all need to help one another, that we all suffer on some level, and through authentic alliances we need never stand alone. When John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence it signalled a major shift in the global evolution of human society, as the new United States of America brought forth a conscious spirit founded in the energy of freedom, liberty, compassion and true power. As an organizing principle this pioneering ancestral spirit paved the way for the American culture of positive thinking and optimism. Now is the time for America to apply this same power and technology to lead the world in pioneering the transformation of our mental states to ones which heal, ones of love and harmony, ones which truly profit us. Theun Mares talks of a time in the Toltec traditions when a person is challenged to embark upon their authentic path. They call this the Knock of the Spirit. When a society is challenged collectively to transform its consciousness, they call this the Cry of the Eagle. America - your Eagle is calling.

Book excerpt: "Explores how industry has manipulated our most deep-seated survival instincts."—David Perlmutter, MD, Author, #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain and Brain Maker The New York Times–bestselling author of Fat Chance reveals the corporate scheme to sell pleasure, driving the international epidemic of addiction, depression, and chronic disease. While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for his New York Times bestseller Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery—our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the “reward” neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the “contentment” neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don’t need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression. Ideally, both are in optimal supply. Yet dopamine evolved to overwhelm serotonin—because our ancestors were more likely to survive if they were constantly motivated—with the result that constant desire can chemically destroy our ability to feel happiness, while sending us down the slippery slope to addiction. In the last forty years, government legislation and subsidies have promoted ever-available temptation (sugar, drugs, social media, porn) combined with constant stress (work, home, money, Internet), with the end result of an unprecedented epidemic of addiction, anxiety, depression, and chronic disease. And with the advent of neuromarketing, corporate America has successfully imprisoned us in an endless loop of desire and consumption from which there is no obvious escape. With his customary wit and incisiveness, Lustig not only reveals the science that drives these states of mind, he points his finger directly at the corporations that helped create this mess, and the government actors who facilitated it, and he offers solutions we can all use in the pursuit of happiness, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. Always fearless and provocative, Lustig marshals a call to action, with seminal implications for our health, our well-being, and our culture.
