This book was released on 1995 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Living on the edge" implies insecurity. On the surface, the people of the Great Northern Peninsula must be marginal Canadians for they live in an isolated area where incomes are low and unemployment high. So why do people stay? How do they cope with life on the margins of an advanced industrial society? The editors and the contributing anthropologists and sociologists try to answer these questions by looking at key attitudes and aspects of the social structure. In addition to analysis of the area's economic base in the fishery, this book deals with the informal economy, the division of labour in households, women's local political action, youth unemployment, and the complex and enduring strategies through which residents not only survive in this harsh environment, but create a relatively satisfying lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While trade had slowed during the Second World War and the overruling Britain had suffered from the Sterling Crisis, the end of the war in 1945 and the full- convertibility of sterling arranged in 1947 meant an expansion of Newfoundland's fish market. [...] The history of women's work in Newfoundland and Labrador highlights how important women were to the sustenance of the family, and how these skills became devalued throughout the 20th Century. [...] While Murray (1979) found women were "more than 50%" of the labour force in Elliston in the 1950s, the Canadian Census of 1951 stated only 16% of women in Newfoundland and Labrador participated in the labour market (Statistics Canada, 1965: Table 1). [...] The Gender Wage Gap Women's traditional role as homemaker and their gradual introduction into the workforce is a common story across North America and the history of women's labour market participation in Newfoundland and Labrador has parallels with the history of women across the country. [...] Mulligan and Rubinstein (2008) found that the change in the composition of the female workforce, due to increased human capital investment, labour force attachment and women's self-selection into the labour force, from the late 1970s to the late 1990s, is responsible for women's relative wage growth.
Book Synopsis Place and Persistence in the Lives of Newfoundland Women by : Marilyn Porter
Download or read book Place and Persistence in the Lives of Newfoundland Women written by Marilyn Porter and published by Aldershot, England : Avebury. This book was released on 1993 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newfoundland is a little known island which lies in the cold Labrador current off the Atlantic coast of Canada. While its proximity to the valuable Grand Banks fisheries made it one of the earliest parts of North America to be settled by Europeans, Newfoundlanders, this text argues, have endured centuries of poverty and exploitation. It contends that the brief burst of prosperity that followed their entry into the Canadian federation has now foundered in the present economic recession and the collapse of the fishery, and that life in Newfoundland has returned to what it has always been - a struggle for survival in a harsh environment.

Respondents were asked to rate the quality of their lives compared to Canadian women and then to other women in the province, to list their top three concerns as women, and to rank a number of concerns from the perspective of community members, paid workers, and women. An additional goal of the survey was to ascertain women's opinions on issues traditionally viewed as women's issues.
