Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Determinism: Or the Economic Interpretation of History The Economic Interpretation of History proceeds by quite different methods; its purpose is simply to get at the truth and the whole truth, and the effect which it produces on the mind is exactly the oppo site from that wrought by the theological method. It is a study of the development of society, and by society is meant all the people, with their facilities for getting a living, their institutions and ideas. It has very little to do with either special events or particular individuals. An individual has no im portance at all, excepting in his relation to all the people, and then the people are the important thing; he is merely an incident. And the mainspring of growth and action is found in the nature of the people themselves, and not in any outside power. But above all, it traces the ways in which the races of men get their living, for all other developments depend upon changes and improvements in the ways of producing the food and the clothing of the race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of English Thought: A Study in the Economic Interpretation of History The following pages attempt to present a theory of history through concrete illustrations. No endeavour is made, however, to relate in detail the events of any period. A knowledge of historical facts being assumed, certain salient features of each epoch will be thrown into relief, so that the main trend of events may be distinguished from the confusing maze into which the presentation of details often leads. English history has been chosen to illustrate this theory, because the conditions and circumstances isolating England for many centuries have made English thought more normal and more uniform than that of her continental neighbours. The advantages of England's insular position are too well known to need restatement; only the effects of this isolation require emphasis. It would be difficult to find another nation whose thought was so little influenced by foreign civilization as that of England from the Reformation to the middle of the present century. During all this time England had a vigorous, or at least an active, foreign policy, which, while it kept her in touch with external events, was the interest chiefly of those in court circles, or, at most, of the small aristocratic class that controlled the State and directed its policy. Although it would take volumes to narrate the story of the struggles, successes, and failures of England's foreign policy during this period, yet these events have no present interest because they affected but little the life and the thought of the people. The great mass of the people, unrepresented in Parliament, took slight interest in the topics it discussed, or the policies it pursued. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Interpretation of History: A Refutation of the Marxian Economic, Interpretation of History The World War has removed Socialism from the realm of academic discussion, and advanced it to first place as the momentous problem Of the day. What promise does Socialism hold out to humanity? Has it come to destroy or to build? Does it mean progress and peace or does it mean chaos and civil war? Is it a menace to civilization or is it an inevitable stage in the development of civilization? The following pages are devoted to a discussion of these fundamental questions. When I was drawing up the list of lectures which I purposed to give in the present term, I very much hesitated before I concluded to put down that which forms my subject to-day. The range of the subject is very great, the facts are very copious and very intricate, the subject from the historical point of view is as yet so utterly unknown, and the evidence is so remote and so near, that I might well despair of giving you a clear and connected outline of the elements from which to make economical inductions and historical interpretations. But, on the other hand, the topic is of such great and general importance, the issues which it raises are of such pro found Significance, the interests of which it treats are so varied and so vital, and the future which it seeks to penetrate by the evidence of the past is so immediate, so full of menace and withal so obscure, that if I am able to throw any light on the situation, I Should be lacking in that courage which one who has special knowledge ought to show, if he thinks he can elucidate a grave250 historical effects OF high and low prices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Interpretation of History, Vol. 1: Lectures Delivered in Worcester College Hall, Oxford, 1887-8 Tee lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the hall of the author's College (worcester, Oxford) in his capacity as lecturer in Political Economy to that Society. They were open to all members of the university, and were very numerously attended. I mention this, because, being printed as they were read, the fact may explain or excuse the various local allusions which they con tain, and the occasional repetitions of statement which will be found in them. The business of a lecturer is to teach as best he can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming Crash: An Economic Interpretation of Present Day History An Economic Interpretation of Present-day History. When history comes to record the diplomacy leading up to and attending the prosecution and conclusion of the great war, there will stand forth the figure of a man, at once magnificent and futile, heroic and tragic, an idealist executive chief of the greatest capitalist State the world has seen - President Woodrow Wilson. No dramatist of antiquity, no playwright of the Elizabethan Age ever conceived so terrible a plot, so awe-inspiring a setting, so complete a ruin as this in which Wilson is the chief actor. There is something about this American professor and his political career sublime in the extreme and yet so pitiful. He is a man beating against the fate of the world, a man striving to hold back the furies of revolution. Society goes hurtling to the universal catastrophe which the writer of "Capital" foretold. Capitalist civilisation is reaching its culmination impelled by the fearful momentum of its evermore frenzied career. The Catastrophe Delayed. Ten years ago it seemed to most of us that we should, without any serious disturbance, evolve from Capitalism to Socialism by legislative action of a most eminently constitutional character. A little while before, and certain theorists of continental Socialism had come to the reasoned conclusion that Marx had been mistaken in his forecast of capitalist concentration and centralisation. There was much in the circumstances of the time that pointed to this revisionist judgment. The theory of increasing misery sometimes misquoted in all sincerity as increasing poverty - appeared to be an error. "The eighties" had passed without the collapse of the system. The unrest and strife of that decade ended without attaining to the seriousness of a crisis. Imperialism opened up State-aided markets for a commercial system that hitherto had eschewed paternalism and governmental patronage. Capitalism entered into a new phase and the middle classes experienced a renewed prosperity, if not a new freedom.
