Book excerpt: This book offers a fascinating exploration of the evolution of the Portuguese economy over the course of eight centuries, from the foundation of the kingdom in 1143, when political boundaries began to take shape in the midst of the Christian Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula, and the formation of an empire, to the integration of the nation into the European Communities and the Economic and Monetary Union. Through six chapters, the authors provide a vibrant history of Portugal's past with a focus ranging from the medieval economy and the age of globalization, to war and recovery, the Atlantic economy, the rise of liberalism and patterns of convergence. The book provides a unique long-term perspective of change in a southern European country and its empire, which responds to the fundamental broader questions about when, how and why economies expand, stagnate or contract.

Book excerpt: Historians have long considered the ways in which the expansion of English trade beyond Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries contributed to the growth of English overseas trade as a whole, and to the coming of the Industrial Revolution. Their concentration on trade between England and her own colonies has led them, however, to neglect the importance of trade with the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in the Americas. Dr Fisher’s examination of Anglo-Portuguese trade between 1700 and 1770, and of the commercial links between the English North American colonies and Portugal, thus gives a wider perspective to our knowledge of the English ‘Commercial Revolution’. This study, based on a wide range of primary sources in England and Portugal, analyses the impressive growth of English trade with Portugal to 1760 and its subsequent decline in the 1760s, particular attention being given to the role of the Brazilian market and Brazilian gold-mining in these movements. The business practice of the merchants engaged in the principal constituent branches of the trade—textiles, foodstuffs, wines, and gold—is made clear and compared, while the characteristic instability of international commerce is borne out in the examination of the seasonal and yearly fluctuations which took place. On a more general level, the concluding chapter explores the relationship between the Portugal trade and the development of the English economy during this period. This book was first published in 1971.

Book excerpt: This book examines the history of what became one of Portugal’s largest banks, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos. The bank was founded in 1876 by the state to run public deposits, and evolved into a savings bank, catering for both public and private deposits. Its history goes beyond the history of banking, as it ties in with the role of the state in the banking sector and financial markets. The book weaves in and out of different political and international contexts, following the many changes of the Portuguese political regime and of its interactions with the national and international economy. The most important lesson from the study is that publicly owned institutions can compete successfully with the private sector when they simultaneously cater for the interests of policy makers as well as those of the public, in this case, the depositors. The history of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos therefore shows how the state of a peripheral economy is capable of successfully managing a large financial institution when the right set of incentives is in place. This work will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of financial and economic history at both the advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will also provide interesting insights for practitioners in the financial sector.

Book excerpt: This book follows the renovation of European economic history towards a more unified interpretation of sources of growth and stagnation. To better understand the diversity of patterns of growth, we need to look beyond the study of the industrialization of the core economies, and explore the centuries before it occurred. Portuguese agriculture was hardly ever at the European productivity and technological forefront and the distance from it varied substantially across the second Millennium. Yet if we look at the periods of the Christian Reconquista, the recovery from the Black Death, the response to the globalization of the Renaissance, to the eighteenth century economic enlightenment, or to nineteenth century industrialization, we may conclude that agriculture in this country of the European periphery was often adaptive and dynamic. The fact that economic backwardness was not overcome by the end of the period is no longer the most relevant aspect of that story. Contributors are: Luciano Amaral, Amélia Branco, Dulce Freire, António Henriques, Pedro Lains, Susana Münch Miranda, Margarida Sobral Neto, Jaime Reis, Ana Maria Rodrigues, José Vicente Serrão and Ester G. Silva.

Excerpt: The economic history of Portugal covers the development of the economy throughout the course of Portuguese history. It has its roots prior to nationality, when Roman occupation developed a thriving economy in Hispania, in the provinces of Lusitania and Gallaecia, as producers and exporters to the Roman Empire. This continued under the Visigoths and then Al-Andalus Moorish rule, until the Kingdom of Portugal was established in 1139. With the end of Portuguese reconquista and integration in the European Middle Age economy, the Portuguese were at the forefront of maritime exploration of the age of discovery, expanding to become the first global empire. Portugal then became the world's main economic power during the Renaissance, introducing most of Africa and the East to European society, and establishing a multi-continental trading system extending from Japan to Brazil. In 1822, Portugal lost its main colony, Brazil. Portuguese territorial claims in Africa were challenged during the Scramble for Africa. Political chaos and economic problems endured from the last years of the monarchy to the first Republic of 1910-1926, which led to the installing of a national dictatorship in 1926. While Finance Minister Antonio de Oliveira Salazar managed to discipline the Portuguese economy, it evolved into a single party corporative regime in 1933-the Estado Novo. The...

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1,1 (A), BVL Campus gGmbH (Transport Economics-Logistics), course: Business, language: English, abstract: [...] The revolution in 1974 was the beginning of dramatic political, economical and social changes in the country. In 1986, when Portugal became a member of the European Community (now European Union), the economy began to grow even faster than it had been the case in the years before. “Portugal ́s GDP per capita, which had been only 53 percent of the EU average in 1985, has now risen to more than 70% of the EU average by 1997.”1 As I was living in Portugal ́s capital Lisbon from 1984 until 1989, I personally experienced these great changes. I can remember that, e.g., chocolate was not known in Portugal until 1986. I also remember narrow roads which were in an extremely bad condition. Tramways and busses made me feel like in the 19th century. Furthermore, there were a lot of huts, particularly in the northern and in the eastern Lisbon periphery which I passed every morning on my way to school. These huts, in which mostly people from the former Portuguese colonies were living, disappeared between 1986 and 1990. Also the infrastructure was getting better and better. Many new roads and motorways were built, the tramway- and underground-system was modernised, big shopping- malls were built and you could suddenly buy almost everything (Haribo-Gummibärchen were sold in Portugal in 1986 for the first time and I guess I was the only one who bought them...) Beside these positive changes I also recognised, that people have changed their behaviour since the 1980 ́s. When I arrived to Portugal with my family in 1984 the Portuguese seemed to be friendlier than any people I had met before and time did not seem to be important to them at all. People were just living somehow, many of them were happy, some were not but nobody really complained about the fact that Portugal was the poorest country in the western part of the European continent. Of course, the Portuguese are still very friendly, but in my opinion the difference between the busy and hectic Central Europeans and the Portuguese has become smaller. It is also quiet obvious that today the Portuguese do everything they can to improve the economic situation and the standard of living. Portugal wants to catch up. It already has caught up enormously in the past 15 years and I am sure that this positive development will continue in the future. 1Department of State,UnitedStatesofAmerica, Portugal 2000: Country Commercial Guide, http://www.state.gov/www/about_state/business/com_guides/2000/europe/portugal00_02.html, 27/06/02

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Portugal was one of the first European states with stable borders, the process of the making of a Portuguese fiscal state still remains to be studied in detail. This volume brings together studies on the development of the Portuguese fiscal state within a comparative perspective in relation to other kingdoms across Europe, such as Castile and Aragon, England, Tuscany, the Papal States, Holland and France, in order to bring Portugal into the broader and comparative international debate about the development of the fiscal state. As a very distinctive case, Portugal remains understudied and underrepresented in the broader literature on the development of fiscal states. There are relatively few studies on the building of a fiscal state in Portugal that are accessible to an international audience. This book will make a fundamental contribution to this field, which is still full of untapped potential. It will combine the latest theory and comparative context with a detailed reconstruction of Portuguese state finance, taking a longer chronological frame that follows its development from the medieval through to the early modern period. It will also make the latest research from Portuguese scholars available to a wider, international audience, and will be of particular interest to researchers and students of financial and economic history.

Download or read book A Concise History of Portugal written by David Birmingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, illustrated history of Portugal offers an introduction to the people and culture of the country, its empire, and to its search for economic modernisation, political stability and international partnership. The book studies the effects of the vast wealth mined from Portuguese Brazil, the growth of the wine trade, and the evolution of international ties. The Portuguese Revolution of 1820 to 1851 created a liberal monarchy, but in 1910 the king was overthrown and, by 1926, had been replaced by a dictatorship. In 1975 Portugal withdrew from its African colonies and turned north to become a democratic member of the European Community in 1986. Researched during the years which followed the fall of Portugal's dictators in 1974, this book has become the standard single-volume work. The second edition brings the story up to date and discusses the state of historical writing on Portugal at the turn of the millennium.
