This book was released on 1995 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines events in the economic history of Brazil over a 25-year period spanning its strong growth phase in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the high inflation which followed, and the external debt crisis of the 1980s. This study examines Brazil's economic history from 1964, when a military regime was instituted, to 1992, when Brazil's first popularly elected president in 25 years was forced from office on charges of corruption. The period witnessed unprecedented growth followed by high levels of inflation and soaring external debt. Reviewing the economic challenges of the 1970s, the author blames poor policymaking in response to two oil price shocks for the onset of high inflation. In addition, a series of failed stabilization efforts after the external debt crisis in 1982 slowed economic growth as investment plummeted. The author concludes with a discussion of the valuable lessons learned from the period. The most important lesson may be that an open economy can postpone essential but unpleasant adjustments to correct serious economic problems, but at a larger cost to society in the long-term. This postponement in Brazil has lead to decreased latitude for policymakers in the 1990s.

They have further reduced debt and managed to keep inflation rates under control while committing to fiscal responsibilities. Nevertheless, back in history, from the 1960s to 1990s the country was struggling with continuously high inflation rates until Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the minister of finance and later president of Brazil, introduced the “Plano Real” 1st of March 1994. The assignment describes the financial history of Brazil between the 1960s and 2000 in brief by giving some numbers about inflation rates and highlighting po-tential reasons for the long period and high rates. In the third chapter the economical relation between money supply and inflation is explained by the quantity theory of money and an alternative to express inflation, the quantity equation, is given. The last part of the essay explains the classical dichotomy in economics in gen-eral and analyses the economical data of Brazil for the 1990s in this regards. The assignment is concluded by the ITM checklist.

Book Synopsis The Brazilian Economy in 1994-1999 by : Andre Averbug
Download or read book The Brazilian Economy in 1994-1999 written by Andre Averbug and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the three main events that shook the Brazilian economy in 1994-1999, a period that represented a turning point in the country's economic history. These events were the implementation of the Real Plan in 1994, the devaluation crisis in 1999, and the subsequent adoption of inflation targets. The principal contributions of this period were the drastic reduction of high inflation rates - the biggest problem in Brazil since the 1970s - and the reorientation towards economic growth, which were also supported by a privatisation programme, the openness of the economy to foreign capital, a trade liberalisation process, and the ongoing fiscal adjustments. Nevertheless, the period also left its scars, such as high budget and current account deficits, accompanied by a policy of elevated interest rates and, until 1999, a highly appreciated exchange rate. The paper concludes with a cautiously optimistic evaluation of the country's economic future based on the accomplishments of the 1990s and the possibility of a long-term commitment to low inflation targets.

Book Synopsis A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America, 1960–2017 by : Timothy J. Kehoe
Download or read book A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America, 1960–2017 written by Timothy J. Kehoe and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major, new, and comprehensive look at six decades of macroeconomic policies across the region What went wrong with the economic development of Latin America over the past half-century? Along with periods of poor economic performance, the region’s countries have been plagued by a wide variety of economic crises. This major new work brings together dozens of leading economists to explore the economic performance of the ten largest countries in South America and of Mexico. Together they advance the fundamental hypothesis that, despite different manifestations, these crises all have been the result of poorly designed or poorly implemented fiscal and monetary policies. Each country is treated in its own section of the book, with a lead chapter presenting a comprehensive database of the country’s fiscal, monetary, and economic data from 1960 to 2017. The chapters are drawn from one-day academic conferences—hosted in all but one case, in the focus country—with participants including noted economists and former leading policy makers. Cowritten with Nobel Prize winner Thomas J. Sargent, the editors’ introduction provides a conceptual framework for analyzing fiscal and monetary policy in countries around the world, particularly those less developed. A final chapter draws conclusions and suggests directions for further research. A vital resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of economics and for economic researchers and policy makers, A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America, 1960–2017 goes further than any book in stressing both the singularities and the similarities of the economic histories of Latin America’s largest countries. Book Synopsis Economic Debates Under Authoritarian Regimes by : Alexandre F. S. Andrada
Download or read book Economic Debates Under Authoritarian Regimes written by Alexandre F. S. Andrada and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper investigates the political and economic contexts of the controversy about the causes of the significant increase of income concentration in Brazil during the 1960s. That was the most important economic debate that took place under the military dictatorship that ran the country from 1964 to 1985. The perceived sharp increase in income inequality posed a challenge to the economic legitimation of the military regime, which had by the early 1970s achieved high rates of economic growth accompanied by falling inflation. We discuss the reasons behind the relatively open economic debate during a period of political repression, as well as its international dimension as reflected in the role played by institutions such as the World Bank.
