Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology of the United States The following work on the Economic Geology of the United States covers essentially the ground which is gone over in the elementary course in this subject in Cornell University, but it is hoped that it will prove useful as a text-book in other colleges. The mode of arrangement is markedly different from that found in other books on the same subject, in that the non metallic minerals are discussed first and the metallic minerals last. This, to the author, seems the most desirable method of treatment, for the reason that the non-metallics are not only the most important, the value of their production having exceeded the metallics by over one hundred and fifty million dollars in 1908, but also because it leads from a discussion of the simpler to the more complex forms of mineral deposits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology: With Special Reference to the United States The continued advance in our knowledge of Economic Geology has necessitated considerable revision for the new edition. In addition, the author has, at the request of a number of teachers, included a description of the more important Canadian mineral deposits, as well as brief references to some of the well-known ones of other countries. While these additions to the text and illustrations have increased the size of the book somewhat, the number of pages is not to be taken as a gauge of the actual increase in size, for the reason that over one hundred full-page illustrations, formerly bound as inserts, are paged in with the text in the present edition. The latest available statistics have been included, and unless otherwise stated are taken from the United States Geological Survey, and Canadian Department of Mines reports. In a few cases, investigations to which reference might have been made in the text have appeared too late to include them, but it has still been possible to insert them in the reference list, and this has been done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Geology United States: With Briefer Mention of Foreign Mineral Products Whenever possible, the localities chosen for description are those with which the author is personally familiar; but, in a field so broad, and covering so many diverse industries, it is scarcely possible for one person to possess information concern ing all, or even a large proportion, of the typical occurrences, or even of all the industries. The work' is, therefore, in many parts a compilation, and free use has been made of all available sources. This has sometimes amounted to an abstract of descrip tions or conclusions, but rarely to actual quotations, since a more condensed statement than is usually found in such sources is needed here. The statistics are almost entirely compiled from the standard sources, and, where more detailed information is desired upon these subjects, reference may be made to these original sources. Scientific problems are discussed only so far as they are of commercial importance or so far as the discussion may contribute to a general understanding of the deposits. The feldspar localities of Maine were visited by the writer in the summer of 1906, the work being authorized by the United States Geo logical Survey in cooperation with the Maine State Survey Commission. Those of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were visited at various times from 1906 to 1909 under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey. Beginning in the spring of 1917 and continuing throughout the period of the war the United States Geological Survey made special field explorations, surveys, and laboratory studies of deposits of ores of metals used in the manufacture of ferroalloys, pig iron, and steel, including manganese, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Economic Geology Deposits that have been precipitated from aqueous solutions in and along fractures in rocks receive but scant attention in'the other branches Of geologic science as now developed, and the study Of such deposits is especially appropriate in the economic branch. Certain definitions, most of which refer to veins or to vein formation, are given below. The list is not exhaustive; the student is advised to refer to the index for other definitions that are introduced at appropriate places in the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Economic Geology, 1903 This bulletin is the second Of a series, the first being Bulletin no. 218, Contributions to Economic Geology for 1902. These bulletins are prepared primarily with a View to securing prompt publication of the economic results of investigations by the United States Geological Survey. They are designed to meet the wants Of the busy man, and are SO condensed that he will be able to Obtain results and conclusions with a minimum expenditure of time and energy. They also afford a better idea of the work which the Survey as an organization is carry ing on for the direct advancement of mining interests throughout the country than can readily be Obtained from the more voluminous reports. The bulletin for 1902 was SO favorably received by those interested in the development Of the mineral industries Of the United States that it is proposed to publish early in each calendar year a Similar bulletin containing the results Of the last year's field work in economic geology. In the preparation Of the present volume promptness Of publication has been made secondary only to the economic utility of the material presented. The papers included are such only as have a direct economic bearing, all questions Of purely scientific interest being excluded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epitome of the Economic Geology of New Mexico In presenting this Epitome of the Economic Geology of New Mexico, it is to be hoped that what is herein offered may be conducive to a more intelligent understanding and appreciation of the dormant mineralogical resources of a commonwealth of which, comparatively speaking, but little is known. Historically, New Mexico is the oldest and most widely known of any section in the United States; commercially, its importance is yet but meagerly comprehended. Although New Mexico is the cradle of the mining industry in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Slope regions, peculiar political conditions have materially retarded its development. The fact, however should not be overlooked that the initial impulse received in the development of the Great West was due to the discovery of gold in Santa Fe County at the base of the Ortiz Mountains, in the year 1828. This discovery was made twenty years before the great gold excitement at Coloma in California and thirty years before the find on Cherry Creek in Colorado. The discovery of placer gold in New Mexico marks the beginning of modern American methods that have so effectually revolutionized every phase in the art of mining and in the science of metallurgy. The evolution of the old wooden bowl, known as the "batea," used in these early diggings, is symbolized in the modern gold pan. Crude designs of the first "rockers" and sluice boxes for washing the auriferous gravels in trans-Mississippi fields, virtually had their inception in this primary gold camp, in Santa Fe County. Among the first stamp mills constructed in the United States may be mentioned the one at Dolores for milling the ores from the celebrated Ortiz mine in Santa Fe County; one at the gold camp of Pinos Altos in Grant County; and one at the Aztec mine at the head of Ute Creek on Baldy Mountain, in Colfax County. The first experiments in ore concentration in the West were conducted by J. Amberg, a German metallurgist at Pinos Altos, in the early sixties of the past century. It should also be noted that the first gold lode or vein discovered and worked west of the Mississippi was made in the year 1833, on the famous Sierra del Oro, constituting what is now known as the Ortiz mine. In the Los Cerrillos district, a few miles west of the Ortiz Mountains, exist what appear to be prehistoric workings on a metalliferous vein of lead and silver, known as Mina del Tierra. This antique working is of unusual interest with incline and nearly vertical shafts connecting and totalling, perhaps, over two hundred feet of work, including drifts and slopes. Again they are so barren of metallic minerals as to permit separation through the hand sorting of the ore. The gangue is then transported to the dump, while the material containing the valuable metal is carried to the mill for treatment. It was prepared for students in colleges and technical schools who already have a knowledge of the elements of general geology and ' mineralogy. It embraces the geology of mineral fuels, structural materials, and other nonmetals and of the metals. The treatment is necessarily brief and might well be followed by specialized courses on coal and petroleum, and a more advanced course on the metals. Mainly Within the last century has this knowledge been organized into the science of geology, and only Within the last few decades have the com plex and increasing demands of modern civilization required the applications of geology to practical uses, resulting in the develop ment of the science generally known as economic geology. This science is not Sharply marked off from the science Of geology proper; almost any phase of geology may at some time or some place take on its economic aspect.
