Those of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were visited at various times from 1906 to 1909 under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey. Samples submitted and the general uniformity of the source of supply to insure against variation of the material. An extra precaution arising from this lack of definite knowledge still prevails in the common practice of never depending on one source of supply for any one ingredient. Often the products of three or more producers are blended so that if any one shall vary without warning the variation arising from its use will not be sufficient to ruin the ware. AS the use of domestic materials has increased, the manufacturer has generally depended on the results of tests of samples submitted. The crude materials differ so greatly from the materials purchased, and the treatment necessary to prepare crude material for use in volves such an intimate acquaintance with its peculiarities that the users had further cause to neglect to acquaint themselves with the details of its mining and preparation. The investigations presented in this bulletin have been undertaken by the bureau with a view to a better understanding of the conditions which confront the producer of commercial feldspar and also with the object of determining wherein the various deposits of feldspar differ. This information will enable the manufacturer to choose the source of supply which is best suited to his needs, and in case a change is necessary to choose more intelligently the location from which to draw for his future supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clays of the State of Washington: Their Geology, Mineralogy, and Technology Work on the clays of Washington was begun in the sum mer of 1901 while working on the Washington Geological Survey, small part of the field season that year being de voted to this work. Some of the most important clay deposits and clay-working plants were visited and samples of the clays procured and sent to the State College for study. On account of other work, nothing further, however, was done until the sum mer of 1903, when, on account of the Washington Geological Survey having been discontinued, the State College took up the work and has furnished the means for completing it. Field work has been carried on during a part of each of the summers of 1903, 1904s, 1905, and 1906; the different localities where the clays are being utilized having been visited, samples of the clays procured, and the deposits studied. Samples have been obtained also from many deposits which up to the present time have not been utilized. For various reasons, however, it has not been possible to visit some localities where clays that are suited to the manufacture of certain kinds of clay products may occur. In some cases samples have been procured from these localities by giving the party interested in the deposit directions in regard to sampling and having samples taken by him and sent to the College. Such assumptions do not appear to be necessary or warranted in the light of late laboratory investigations. As a matter of fact dilute hydro chloric acid extracts very little more potash than does water alone. It is now well known that many glasses are more readily acted on by water than they are by acid solutions. The complex silicates, of which the feldspars are a type, are mainly insoluble, even in strong mineral acids, and the explanation of their natural decomposition as due to the action of carbonic, humus, and other weak acids is not satisfactory.
