Book excerpt: In this paper, a new sampling plan is introduced based on the run length of conforming items and Taguchi loss function. Run length of conforming items is used for decision making about the quality of a lot. The proposed sampling plan is based on the Markov modeling. A continuous Taguchi loss function is used to obtain loss of deviations between the value of quality characteristics and its target. An optimization model is developed for obtaining the optimal control tolerances and the corresponding critical acceptance and rejection thresholds based on the geometric distribution, which minimizes the loss function for both producers and consumers. For practical purpose, a numerical example is presented to illustrate how the proposed procedure can be applied to design acceptance sampling plans. In addition, the results of a comparison study denoted the merits of proposed model. At the end, a general model regarding the risk of consumer and producer is developed. A sensitivity analysis is carried out on the different values of the required parameters in order to validate the results of optimization model.

Book excerpt: This short monograph provides a synthesis of new research on sampling designs that are dependent on sample moments or the order statistics of auxiliary variables. The range of survey sampling methods and their applications has gradually increased over time, and these applications have led to new theoretical solutions that provide better sampling designs or estimators. Recently, several important properties of sampling designs have been discovered, and many new methods have been published. Offering an overview of these developments, this book describes sampling designs dependent on the sample generalized variance of auxiliary variables, examines properties of sampling designs proportional to functions of sample order statistics of the auxiliary variable, and takes into account continuous sampling designs. The text will be useful for students and statisticians whose work involves survey sampling, and it will inspire those looking for new sampling designs dependent on auxiliary variables.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a cost model for a group sampling scheme is proposed for inspection of the lifetime of a product when the lifetime of the product follows a Weibull distribution. The optimal parameters of the group sampling plan are determined by minimizing the total cost and satisfying both the producer's risk and the consumer's risk simultaneously for the specified values of termination time, number of testers, and median ratio as the quality parameter. The application of the proposed plan is given in metrology for the inspection of chip products. We have conducted a comparative study, and it shows that the use of the proposed plan for testing the chips minimized the cost more than the existing acceptance sampling plan. Tables are provided, along with the total cost required for the life test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the first two volumes, published in 1981 and 1984 and met with a lively response, the present volume is collecting contributions stressed on methodology or successfull industrial applications. The papers are classified under two main headings; sampling inspection and process quality control. Among the papers dealing with sampling inspection, Liebesman analyzes the forthcoming ISO Standard for attribute skip-lot sampling, and v. Collani derives an alpha-optimal version of the Military Standard 105 D. Schneider and Wilrich have a strong case against cost optimal Bayesian sampling plans. Ohta and Furukawa deal with a new approach for calculating the operating characteristic of sequential sampling plans by attributes. Prematurely terminated sequential life tests for Military Standard 781 C are introduced by Derman, Lieberman and Schechner. Baillie extends the univariate methods for sampling inspection by variables to the multivariate case. A sampling inspection system for incoming batches based on relational databases is discussed by Lenz. The second group of papers deals with process quality control and continuous inspection. Ladany comes with a practical example of the engagement of a mini robot in process quality control . Shahani and Senna give some basic results for a two test scheme for the detection of failure of a production process, and Bergman suggests a control chart which is an improvement of an acceptance control chart. Montgomery, Gardiner and Pizzano discuss some practical aspects of the use of CUSUM charts and geometric moving average control charts, Wadsworth and Wasserman present a modified CUSUM procedure as a continuous sampling scheme, and Rendtel uses a generalized CUSUM-scheme to control the percent defective of a continuous production process. Heuristic economical designs for and R control charts are proposed by Saniga. Arnold designs and compares control charts based on the minimax principle. Woodall shows that the usually ignored statistical performance of economically optimal control charts can often be greatly improved. Murugesan and Hassan investigate the design of interrelated manufacturing and quality systems for multistage nonserial production.

Book excerpt: The sampling plan using the classical statistics under the exponential distribution can be applied only when there are certainty and clearness and in observations and parameters. But, in practice, it is not necessary that under some circumstances all the observations/parameters are determined. So, we cannot analyze them using the classical statistics which provides results in the determined values.

Book excerpt: In the 1920's, Walter Shewhart visualized that the marriage of statistical methods and manufacturing processes would produce reliable and consistent quality products. Shewhart (1931) conceived the idea of statistical process control (SPC) and developed the well-known and appropriately named Shewhart control chart. However, from the 1930s to the 1990s, literature on SPC schemes have been "captured" by the Shewhart paradigm of normality, independence and homogeneous variance. When in fact, the problems facing today's industries are more inconsistent than those faced by Shewhart in the 1930s. As a result of the advances in machine and sensor technology, process data can often be collected on-line. In this situation, the process observations that result from data collection activities will frequently not be serially independent, but autocorrelated. Autocorrelation has a significant impact on a control chart: the process may not exhibit a state of statistical control when in fact, it is in control. As the prevalence of this type of data is expected to increase in industry (Hahn 1989), so does the need to control and monitor it. Equivalently, literature has reflected this trend, and research in the area of SPC with autocorrelated data continues so that effective methods of handling correlated data are available. This type of data regularly occurs in the chemical and process industries, and is pervasive in computer-integrated manufacturing environments, clinical laboratory settings and in the majority of SPC applications across various manufacturing and service industries (Alwan 1991).
