Book excerpt: The high feed grain prices of the last few years and the resulting high prices for heavy feeder cattle relative to lightweight feeder calves may provide economic incentives to market cattle from rangelands as yearlings. A majority of the economic studies investigating the profitability of retained ownership of beef calves to sell as yearlings have used a budgeting technique to compare a straight cow-yearling operation retaining all calves, to a straight cow-calf operation selling all calves. In this study linear programming was used to develop an optimum combination of various livestock marketing alternatives for maximizing net ranch income. Two typical Utah ranch sizes (150 and 300 head of brood cows) were modeled and optimum range livestock marketing schemes were developed using linear programming analysis. Based on average Utah cattle prices for 1970-1975 the optimum range livestock management alternatives for both ranch sizes in terms of maximizing net ranch income was to reduce the cow herd 25 percent and use the released feed resources to retain all steer calves for sale as yearlings. Retention of heifer calves was not profitable and they were sold a t weaning. Net ranch income for the optimum strategy was only slightly higher than the income of the base cow-calf operation for the small ranch. The large ranch showed a larger gain in net ranch income from retention of yearlings. The capital requirement of the optimum strategies was three to five percent less than for the base cow-calf operations. A reduction in the size of the breeding herd to accommodate retained yearlings would result in a reduction in the number of feeder livestock marketed. Potential decreases in U. S. beef production from 1 to 4 percent were estimated if 25-100 percent of the ranchers in the 11 western states adopted the optimum management alternative. These reductions would result in an increase in the price of beef in the U. S. of 1 to 6 percent.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of two chapters using agent-based modeling for a crop-livestock production system incorporating human labor. The first chapter examines the principles used to develop a fundamental simulation pertaining to grazing cereal rye (Secale cereal L.) with calves. Within the software guidelines, the base model has the ability to capture diverse system interactions between livestock/plants and land management with human labor efficiency. AnyLogic incorporates agent-based modeling while combining with discrete event modeling and system dynamics. The purpose of the model was to find the economic returns of grazing cover crops relative to the area of Mead, Nebraska. In our simulation model, we used data from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Climate Center. The model was developed to create more in depth case studies to help further the understanding of crop and livestock interactions through simulation. AnyLogic is a complex tool that has the capabilities of discovering the interactions between crops, livestock, land, and humans. In the second chapter, we examined the economic returns of grazing cereal rye with calves versus mechanically removing the cover crop. This analysis evaluated production risks due to weather variability and cattle market risk to determine the theoretical best outcome using existing weather and market data. Working with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's agronomy and animal science departments, we modified a cereal rye growth production model first proposed by Feyereisen et al. (2006) to match recent on-farm production trial experience in Mead, Nebraska. Based on simulation results over multiple years, it was determined that mechanically harvesting cereal rye is a better option as a long term fixed strategy than grazing cereal rye. This is largely due to cattle market risk during the spring grazing period. The costs associated with mechanically removing the crop depend on farm size and equipment used. Both chapters utilize a model simulating the grazing of cover crops developed using the AnyLogic software while the analysis on mechanically removing the forage was completed with the use of a University of Nebraska-Lincoln cover crop budget. Through bridging the gap between production and economic information, this study sought to develop a financial comparison between the two cover crop strategies for eastern Nebraska farmers.

Book excerpt: A study was made to determine the relative profitability and competitive position of cattle fattening, lamb fattening, and milk production in the state of Utah for 1968. Production costs of cattle fattening ranged from $22.10 to $32.28 per hundred pounds of gain. Net return amounted to $19.65 per head. Lamb fattening costs ranged from $24.25 to $29.76 per hundred pounds of gain. Net return from lamb feeding operations averaged $2.06 per head. Cost of producing milk amounted to $4.90 per hundredweight while net return amounted to $.61 per hundredweight. Measure of profitability used 1n comparison included $100 worth of feed fed, return per hour of labor, and return per $100 invested in fixed assets. Lamb fattening was the most profitable of the selected enterprises. Return per $100 worth of feed fed amounted to $35.46, $25.35, and $21.68 for lamb fattening, cattle fattening, and milk production respectively. Based on return per hour, lamb fattening, cattle fattening, and milk production contributed $10.08, $8.50, and $2.49 per hour respectively. Labor requirement was much higher for milk production than the other enterprises. Return per $100 invested showed lambs again to be the most profitable showing a return of $79.54. Cattle fattening was second with a return of $24.00 return per $100 invested in fixed assets. All three selected enterprises could pay as high as $28.00 per ton for alfalfa and $2.60 per hundredweight for barley without causing a negative return.
