Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have always had land in which the agricultural productivity is limited because there is not enough moisture. Systems of farming and burning often degrade dryland further until it is desert. Today, however, the problem is becoming much more serious. Over 20 per cent of the world's population lives in dryland areas, and unless action is taken drylands will increase dramatically. This book focuses on the people who live and .farm in the drylands, their use of land resources and the economic returns from their decisions. In a clear and thorough economic appraisal, the authors show how it is still possible to arrest the problem. Originally published in 1989

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drylands are a sizeable part of the world's potentially arable land. They vary from the hyper-arid regions of the classic deserts of Africa and Asia to the more common semi-arid and sub-humid areas that support extensive agricultural systems dependent on rainfall or irrigation. Following their successful and innovative work The Economics of Dryland Management the editors have assembled twenty case studies from nine countries in the continents of Africa, Asia, North America and Australia. They help to explore more fully the costs of land degradation and illustrate the economics of reclamation, rehabilitation and prevention. The cases in this book present a rich, varied and readable survey of a wide range of drylands and their resources. Originally published in 19990

Book excerpt: Although the problems of theory, measurement, and the correct specification of farmer objective functions, discussed in this chapter, all call into question the adequacy of studies of small farmer efficiency based on a profit maximizing behavioral model, nevertheless efficiency may be a worthwhille area of study and profit maximization an acceptable assumptiom. Several empirical studies of resource allocation by small farmers that found their behavior to be consistente with effciency and profit maximization were cited abive in the first section of this chapter. Hence, the empirical evidence tends to indicate that efficieency analysis often produces a model which conformes fairly well to actual farmer behavior. Thus, despite empirical and theoretical compliations which some feel make efficiency analysis of small farmer behavior of dubious merit, it may argued that it is still usefull for policy purposes to investigate issues of resource wastage among small farmers, Efforts to understand whether and why some small farmers produce more than others given the same levls of observed imputs, seen to be particulary important in low income countries where there is substantial concern to maximizede productivity of the available scarce resources. Since the skills of the farm managers may have a substantial influence on their ability to attain efficiency, and since investments in schooling or ...

The book first discusses the theory of resource demand. Topics include decision milieu in agriculture; aggregate demand for an input; and notes on the statistical estimation of the demand function for an input. The text also examines the role of labor in agriculture, including agricultural wages, migration from agriculture, and regional labor supply. The monograph underscores the use of machineries in the agricultural sector. Analysis of post-war demand for power and machinery; early developments in agricultural mechanization; trends in the use of other machinery; and supply conditions for agricultural machinery are discussed. The text also looks at the use of fertilizers and pesticides in the agricultural sector, as well the need to invest in farm buildings. The book examines the demand for resources and supply of agricultural products. Future pattern of resource use and technological change; interactions between demands for different resources; and resource demand and a derived supply elasticity are discussed. The text is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the economic analysis of the agricultural industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, policy makers have been paying more attention to the problems of small farmers in developing countries with the idea of increasing their pro-duction and standard of living. The policy makers' objec-tives are twofold: I 1 I to help those whose welfare is materially below the rest of society, and 121 to help a coun-try increase its agricultural production. With adequate agricultural policies, these two objectives are mutually reinforcing. For example, increased food production gives farm households additional food for consumption and surpluses for sale. Farmers can then use the money from these sales to buy items they do not produce, and the buyers of farm products benefit from the increased sup-plies.
