Book Synopsis Economía política desde Estambul a Potosí by : Fernando Ramos Palencia
Download or read book Economía política desde Estambul a Potosí written by Fernando Ramos Palencia and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Mobile Capital and Latin American Development by : James E. Mahon
Download or read book Mobile Capital and Latin American Development written by James E. Mahon and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particularly timely in light of the recent Mexican peso crisis, Mobile Capital and Latin American Development examines the causes, consequences, and implications of the Latin American capital flight of the 1980s. It addresses the increasingly mobile and privatized nature of international capital and its power to shape economic policy in those countries. Through a comparison of the policy experiences of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela, James E. Mahon finds that those countries that suffered the most capital flight had previously faced fewer structural trade problems and had not reoriented their exchange policies to diversify exports and deal with exchange-market instability. Since the countries that stumbled worst into capital flight before the debt crisis were later among the most aggressive neoliberal reformers, Mahon discusses the ways in which overseas capital served as a kind of pressure for free-market reform. Finally, the idea that internationally mobile capital now can operate as a kind of senate--an arm of the wealthy few, guarding the established order against the arbitrary, dangerous tendencies of the executive and popular chamber--is examined with relation to theories of dependency and the institutionalization of democracy.

Book Synopsis Women in Medieval Society by : Susan Mosher Stuard
Download or read book Women in Medieval Society written by Susan Mosher Stuard and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early medieval women exercised public roles, rights, and responsibilities. Women contributed through their labor to the welfare of the community. Women played an important part in public affairs. They practiced birth control through abortion and infanticide. Women committed crimes and were indicted. They owned property and administered estates. The drive toward economic growth and expansion abroad rested on the capacity of women to staff and manage economic endeavors at home. In the later Middle Ages, the social position of women altered significantly, and the reasons why the role of women in society tended to become more restrictive are examined in these essays.
Book Synopsis The International Political Economy of Transformation in Argentina, Brazil and Chile Since 1960 by : E. Pang
Download or read book The International Political Economy of Transformation in Argentina, Brazil and Chile Since 1960 written by E. Pang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-09-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how the three most important countries in South America have responded to the challenges of globalization since the mid-1960s, the first OPEC price hike, the Third World debt crisis leading to the 'lost-decade' for the continent, and finally bold, but often ill-planned, neo-liberal reforms of the 1990s. Latin America will experience another cycle of structural changes in the coming decades, as the reforms of the 1980s and 1990s failed to produce the desired effects; social justice, fair income distribution, sustainable growth, and consolidation of democracy.
Book Synopsis Networks in the Early History of Capitalism by : Stefania Montemezzo
Download or read book Networks in the Early History of Capitalism written by Stefania Montemezzo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a detailed examination of Venetian commerce in the Middle Ages, this book explores the business practices and structures that enabled merchants to compete in a challenging international market. Contributing to the literature on the early history of capitalism, this book demonstrates how Venetian merchants combined innovation with traditional methods to maintain their edge in a competitive world, providing valuable lessons on resilience and strategic planning in commerce. Small- and mid-sized commercial companies operating across borders and geographies in the early Renaissance period faced numerous challenges, including identifying profitable sectors and businesses, developing effective business strategies, dealing with peers and subordinates, managing the flow of information, and assessing risks and potential rewards. The chapters explore a range of topics in this context, including the roles of family-based firms, the strategic deployment of agents, and the impact of state policies on private enterprise. Readers are introduced to the ways Venetian merchants managed capital, adapted to market demands, and overcame obstacles like wars and resource shortages. This book will be of significant interest to historians and social scientists researching economic history, the history of trade, the history of capitalism, medieval and Renaissance history, and historical network analysis.
