This book was released on 2022 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flea beetle, Longitarsus jacobaeae (Swiss biotype), exhibited a classical biological control pattern on its host plant tansy ragwort (Senecio jacobaea L.) in Naramata, B.C. by rapidly increasing in number after its release and causing the decline of the plant. L. jacobaeae's presence was identified by approximately 1.6-mm2 feeding holes in the ragwort's leaves. L. jacobaeae fed preferentially on rosettes (p=0.0333) as opposed to bolted plants (p=0.4621). It caused a visibly significant decrease in the number of rosettes and bolted plants combined at the trial sites in 3-4 years (p=0.0221). From the point of release, L. jacobaeae dispersed 100 m over the study site in 4 years.

Book excerpt: Following a wildfire in 1994, the Tally Lake Ranger District in Northwestern Montana experienced a population explosion of Senecio jacobaea or tansy ragwort. This was only the second, and by far the largest infestation of this invasive weed in the state of Montana. Information derived from the Invaders Database was used to project the potential regional spread of tansy ragwort without management action. Historical records dating back to 1901 were used to project the likely future expansion of tansy ragwort within the five northwestern states. At a more local scale, with information from the Invaders Database and other sources, Dr. Rice was able to provide the Project Interdisciplinary Team with a tansy ragwort risk rating for disturbed and forested site conditions...The habitat type risk ratings, based on the Invaders Database, are being used to help set priorities for 1998 inventory efforts.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tansy ragwort (Senecio iacobea) is a widely distributed weed in the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.) where it causes severe damage to the livestock industry. Sheep are highly resistant to toxic effects of ragwort, therefore, induction of ragwort preference in sheep was sought as a means to control this poisonous plant. The effect of two early exposure periods to tansy ragwort on future grazing preferences of five sheep genotypes was evaluated. Lambs were exposed at six months of age (ragwort fed fresh), and then at 15 months of age (ragwort fed as pellets). Four treatment groups were created; lambs exposed during both periods (T1), lambs exposed only during the first period (T2), lambs exposed only during the second period (T3), and lambs not exposed in either period (T4). Ragwort preferences were evaluated at 17 (Exp.l) and 19 (Exp. 2) months of age through direct grazing observation, and through plant observation before and after grazing. Experimental animals grazed in paddocks naturally infested with the weed. Results showed no treatment effects on preferences for tansy ragwort. In Exp.l consumption of the weed was so limited that comparisons were not possible between sheep genotypes nor between treatment groups. In Exp. 2 an interaction (p
