Book excerpt: This technical report provides detailed information that supports the White Pine in the Lake Abitibi and Lake Temagami Ecoregions of Ontario public report that is part of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' State of Resources Reporting series. It presents a brief review of the ecology of white pine, with special reference to the Lake Abitibi (3E) and Lake Temagami (4E) ecoregions of northeastern Ontario. As well, it provides a detailed presentation and discussion of provincial data on the current status and management of this resource. An overview of the climate, physiography, geology, soils, ecology, and ecological values associated with white pine forests in this region is followed by a review of the historical social and economic importance of white pine to both the province and the region. The manner in which European settlement and the historical development of Ontario shaped the extent, composition, structure, condition, and management of the white pine resource in the region is discussed. The policies and management practices, as well as challenges to white pine management in these ecoregions are summarized. The report concludes with a discussion of modelling efforts to compare the effects of current selected management scenarios on the future extent of white pine forests and associated wood supply.--Document.
Book Synopsis Protected Areas, National Parks and Sustainable Future by : Ahmad Bakar

Book excerpt: This book aims to examine the context and practice of national parks regarding a countries obligations to safeguard biodiversity through the protection and management of forest-protected areas. The book examines the wider impacts of national parks within the scope of an integrated environmental hub at the global and regional level and eventually delves into the country case. Three areas are covered: theoretical underpinnings and concepts related to national parks, exploring their various modalities and integrated concerns for the environment; an empirical review in lieu of effective management of protected areas as defined by the World Conservation Union IUCN, addressing the efficient use of human and material resources, including national/agency-protected area regulations and legislation, policies, international conventions and designations, management plans, and/or agreements associated with those areas; and evaluation of challenges underlying a countrys intention to gauge the potential of a national park and pinpoint adequate attention on exploiting new strategies for national park management.

Puttock and published by Sault Ste Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlines the development and use of a compatible growth and yield model for red pine and white pine stands under a uniform shelterwood silvicultural system in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. The model incorporates stand age, residual (post-harvest) basal area, site index, composition index (proportion of pine basal area), and projected age as predictor variables for estimating residual gross merchantable pine volume and for projecting basal area and gross merchantable pine volume growth over a given time period. Model results are presented for periods up to 25 years following uniform shelterwood harvesting and for stand ages of 40 to 130 years. The appendix contains yield curves and yield tables.
