Book excerpt: This technical report provides detailed information that supports the White Pine in the Lake Abitibi and Lake Temagami Ecoregions of Ontario public report that is part of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' State of Resources Reporting series. It presents a brief review of the ecology of white pine, with special reference to the Lake Abitibi (3E) and Lake Temagami (4E) ecoregions of northeastern Ontario. As well, it provides a detailed presentation and discussion of provincial data on the current status and management of this resource. An overview of the climate, physiography, geology, soils, ecology, and ecological values associated with white pine forests in this region is followed by a review of the historical social and economic importance of white pine to both the province and the region. The manner in which European settlement and the historical development of Ontario shaped the extent, composition, structure, condition, and management of the white pine resource in the region is discussed. The policies and management practices, as well as challenges to white pine management in these ecoregions are summarized. The report concludes with a discussion of modelling efforts to compare the effects of current selected management scenarios on the future extent of white pine forests and associated wood supply.--Document.

Book excerpt: This book aims to examine the context and practice of national parks regarding a countries obligations to safeguard biodiversity through the protection and management of forest-protected areas. The book examines the wider impacts of national parks within the scope of an integrated environmental hub at the global and regional level and eventually delves into the country case. Three areas are covered: theoretical underpinnings and concepts related to national parks, exploring their various modalities and integrated concerns for the environment; an empirical review in lieu of effective management of protected areas as defined by the World Conservation Union IUCN, addressing the efficient use of human and material resources, including national/agency-protected area regulations and legislation, policies, international conventions and designations, management plans, and/or agreements associated with those areas; and evaluation of challenges underlying a countrys intention to gauge the potential of a national park and pinpoint adequate attention on exploiting new strategies for national park management.

Research areas included red and white pine autecology, early red and white pine establishment and survival, post-disturbance natural successional patterns, and the effect of past and current management practices on early red and white pine survival and establishment. Professional foresters, working in Ontario, were consulted to determine current forest management practices.

Book excerpt: Outlines the development and use of a compatible growth and yield model for red pine and white pine stands under a uniform shelterwood silvicultural system in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. The model incorporates stand age, residual (post-harvest) basal area, site index, composition index (proportion of pine basal area), and projected age as predictor variables for estimating residual gross merchantable pine volume and for projecting basal area and gross merchantable pine volume growth over a given time period. Model results are presented for periods up to 25 years following uniform shelterwood harvesting and for stand ages of 40 to 130 years. The appendix contains yield curves and yield tables.

The guide reflects relevant literature and research, and the knowledge and experience of forestry staff in the management of the working group in Ontario and elsewhere. The guide covers the range and commercial importance of white pine and red spruce, siting, and wildlife and environmental considerations. Management prescriptions include such silvicultural systems as shelterwood and clear cut systems, harvesting considerations, forest renewal, stand maintenance, conversion and management intensity. Data is also given on the age-class distribution, historical harvest, average roundwood receipts, and biological rotation ages.

Book excerpt: In 1991, the development of a spatial forest data base over most of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region was commissioned to provide the thematic basis for studies conducted for the forest fragmentation and biodiversity project under the forest landscape ecology program. The data base included a range of forest and vegetation cover classes, with the red pine and white pine stands restricted to those over 50 years of age. A method combining remote sensing and geographic information system technology was used for the project. This report describes the northern and southern sectors of the Eastern Ontario segment.
