Book Synopsis The Late, Great Lakes by : William Ashworth
Download or read book The Late, Great Lakes written by William Ashworth and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late, Great Lakes is a powerful indictment of man's carelessness, ignorance, and apathy toward the Great Lakes. With the longest continuous coastline in the United States, they hold one-fifth of the world's freshwater supply. Author William Ashworth presents a compelling history of the Great Lakes, from their formation in the Ice Age, to their "discovery" by Samuel de Champlian in 1615, and, finally, to their impending death in our time. Ashworth systematically deals with the wild life that once flourished in the region-beaver, salmon, whitefish, and trout-and describes the threatening elements which have displaced them-the predatory sea lamprey, the alewives, toxic waste, and volatile solids.

Download or read book Honor the Earth written by Phil Bellfy and published by Ziibi Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes Basin is under severe ecological threat from fracking, bursting pipelines, sulfide mining, abandonment of government environmental regulation, invasive species, warming and lowering of the lakes, etc. This book presents essays on Traditional Knowledge, Indigenous Responsibility, and how Indigenous people, governments, and NGOs are responding to the environmental degradation which threatens the Great Lakes. This volume grew out of a conference that was held on the campus of Michigan State University on Earth Day, 2007. All of the essays have been updated and revised for this book. Among the presenters were Ward Churchill (author and activist), Joyce Tekahnawiiaks King (Director, Akwesasne Justice Department), Frank Ettawageshik, (Executive Director of the United Tribes of Michigan), Aaron Payment (Chair of the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians), and Dean Sayers (Chief of the Batchewana First Nation). Winona LaDuke (author, activist, twice Green Party VP candidate) also contributed to this volume. Adapted from the Introduction by Dr. Phil Bellfy: "The elements of the relationship that the Great Lakes' ancient peoples had with their environment, developed over the millennia, was based on respect for the natural landscape, pure and simple. The "original people" of this area not only maintained their lives, they thrived within the natural boundaries established by their relationship with the natural world. In today's vocabulary, it may be something as simple as an understanding that if human beings take care of the environment, the environment will take care of them. The entire relationship can be summarized as "harmony and balance, based on respect."

Book Synopsis Great Lakes, Great Legacy? by : Theo Colborn
Download or read book Great Lakes, Great Legacy? written by Theo Colborn and published by Washington, D.C. : Conservation Foundation ; Ottawa : Institute for Research on Public Policy. This book was released on 1990 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that simply augmenting actions already taken to remedy environmental degradation in the Great Lakes region, such as control of polluters, and piecemeal restrictions of physical development, is not a sufficient response. Rather, it shows that a far-reaching commitment to reduce the environmental assault on the Great Lakes from all sources is necessary. It also underscores the need for a dramatic break from the crisis management approach to environmental degradation that persists in the region, and to develop a commitment to anticipate and prevent future legacies of environmental destruction.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Ecosystem Management for the Great Lakes by : Lynton K. Caldwell
Download or read book Perspectives on Ecosystem Management for the Great Lakes written by Lynton K. Caldwell and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-07-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 Canada and the United States concluded an agreement for the protection and enhancement of water quality in the Great Lakes based on the ecosystem approach to management. Since ratification of this agreement, little progress has been made in practical application of this concept to basin-wide management for the Great Lakes. At the same time public concern for the quality of the Great Lakes and their future has risen dramatically. As a result, the need has arisen for a practical, authoritative explanation of the ecosystem concept. This volume, written by highly qualified authorities, addresses these important ecological, political, and economic issues in a systematic and informative manner. In this study, the ecosystem concept and its objectives are defined. The institutional structure that has evolved for governance of the Great Lakes, the need for a more effective governance structure, and prospects for rehabilitation of the Great Lakes Waters are crucial issues considered. The management question is the single most important policy question with respect to the Great Lakes and this is the only study available that brings together all pertinent information and provides steps for new and constructive management of the Great Lakes.
Book Synopsis The Dismal State of the Great Lakes by : James P. Ludwig, Ph. D
Download or read book The Dismal State of the Great Lakes written by James P. Ludwig, Ph. D and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ludwig tells powerful stories about places, people and environmental issues. He narrates with unfl inching honesty his experiences investigating and tracking down the culprits in continuing environmental contamination. He rises to meet the beauty and grace of the Great Lakes with lively tales of decades out on their waters as a researcher. This book is an indispensable part of the Great Lakes literary canon." Dave Dempsey, author of "On the Brink: The Great Lakes in the 21st Century" and "The Blanchard Connection". "Ludwig has written a monumental compendium about the largest source of fresh water in the world, a life support system whose function he reveals has been under siege. It refl ects what happened as peer reviewed science, public health, and common sense were set aside and corporate-creep infected the chambers where policy decisions are made. It also parallels the same problem where humanity is now under siege from a growing list of epidemics of endocrine-related disorders the problem fi rst reported by Ludwig and his cronies back in the early 80s." Theo Colborn, Ph.D President, The Endocrine Disruption Exchange
