Book excerpt: There has long been an achievement gap between African American youth and their European counterparts. This phenomenon has constantly been studied and continues to be a concern in not only the education arena, but also the social work field. The current study was conducted using The Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The Ecological Systems Theory was used in order to guide the current study in order to determine which factors are correlated with the high academic achievement of African American youth. The overall purpose of the study was to analyze ecological correlates that contribute to academic achievement among African American adolescents. The reasoning behind the study is to fill gaps that may exist that will aid in solving the issues of low academic achievement of African American youth and add knowledge that will enable social workers and educators to do what is necessary to help our youth and future productive society members. The sample in the current study consisted of 1619 African American youths, ages 13-17. There were more females (846; 52.3%) than males (773; 47.7%) included in the sample. Linear regression was used, along with and Independent t-test and ANOVA in order to analyzed the results of the data. Questions from the original study were analyzed for the results of the present study. Out of all of the correlates, school connectedness accounted for more of the variance in academic achievement, followed by discipline. Approximately 55% of the total variance was accounted for by the correlates analyzed in the current study. This study presents implications for policy, practice and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), path analytic procedures were performed to test an ecological model of the effects of family, individual and school characteristics on the academic achievement of African American students. A distinctive feature of this study is the inclusion of school computer use in the model. The study results show that several of the family influence variables directly or indirectly affected 12th grade academic achievement. Furthermore, most of the individual influence variables were directly related to 12th grade achievement. Two surprising findings from this study were the insignificant effects of family income and school computer use on 12th grade achievement. Overall, the findings support the notion that family, individual, and school characteristics are important predictors of academic success among African American students.

Book excerpt: Research indicates that ecological contexts, such as the family and school, surrounding youth are significant influences on their educational outcomes. This study examined the relationship of family, community and school environments and the academic achievement of African American and Hispanic students. In addition, this study sought to examine the interaction between family socioeconomic status and other familial factors in predicting students' self-reported grades and standardized test scores. In a sample of 1,633 eighth graders drawn from the base-year of the public-use National Educational Longitudinal Survey of 1988 (NELS:88), familial and school factors were found to significantly influence students' grades and standardized test scores. Furthermore, family socioeconomic status moderated other family factors, such as parent-child interactions, family resources, and parental involvement, to predict students' grades and test scores. These findings suggest that the immediate environments surrounding students are important to their academic performance. The findings of this study have implications for educators, policymakers, and parents as well as researchers who study academic achievement.
