This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oilseed rape is a major arable crop in both Europe and North America. It is attacked by unique complexes of insect pests still largely controlled through the application of chemical insecticides. Crop management systems for the future must combine sustainability with environmental acceptability to satisfy both social and economic demands. This book, in its 17 chapters each led by a world expert, reviews research progress towards developing integrated pest management systems for the crop that enhance conservation biocontrol. This approach is particularly timely because of the development in Europe of insecticide resistance in the pollen beetle, a major pest of the crop. The past decade has seen considerable progress in our knowledge of the parasitoids and predators that contribute to biocontrol, of their distribution patterns, and their behavioural ecology, both within and without the crop. There is potential for natural enemy conservation through modification of within-field crop husbandry practices, as well as, on the landscape scale, through habitat manipulation to encourage vegetational diversity. This book will prove invaluable as a text for researchers, university teachers, graduate scientists, extension workers and growers involved in integrated pest management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Management of Arthropod Pests of Tomato provides insight into the proper and appropriate application of pesticides and the integration of alternative pest management methods. The basis of good crop management decisions is a better understanding of the crop ecosystem, including the pests, their natural enemies, and the crop itself. This book provides a global overview of the biology and management of key arthropod pests of tomatoes, including arthropod-vectored diseases. It includes information that places tomatoes in terms of global food production and food security, with each pest chapter including the predators and parasitoids that have specifically been found to have the greatest impact on reducing that particular pest. In-depth coverage of the development of resistance in tomato plants and the biotic and abiotic elicitors of resistance and detailed information about the sustainable management of tomato pests is also presented. Provides basic biological and management information for arthropod pests of tomato from a global perspective, encompassing all production types (field, protected, organic) Includes chapters on integrated management of tomato pests and specific aspects of tomato pest management, including within protected structures and in organic production Presents management systems that have been tested in the real-world by the authors of each chapter Fully illustrated throughout with line drawings and color plates that illustrate key pest and beneficial arthropods associated with tomato production around the world

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathogenic fungi are widely distributed and can infect many organisms, particularly humans, but also other vertebrates and insects. Due to a growing number of fungal infections, there is an increasing need to understand the interaction of pathogenic fungi with their hosts. This second completely updated and revised edition of Volume VI of The Mycota consists of state of the art reviews written by experts in the field, covering three major areas of this rapidly developing field. In the first part the current understanding of pathogenic fungi and the physiological reactions relevant for the pathogen - host interaction are elucidated. The second part describes novel technologies for the identification of proteins, virulence factors and mechanisms central to the host - pathogen interaction. The third part deals with the characterization of the host response towards pathogenic fungi and addresses timely clinical aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oilseed rape, a major crop in many parts of the world, is attackedby a wide range of insect pests, many of which are of considerableeconomic importance. With the increasing demand to reduceagrochemical inputs on arable crops, the Commission of the EuropeanCommunities supported a three-year programme in which scientificparticipants reviewed the natural enemies of oilseed rape insectpests. The various outputs from this important work form the basisof this comprehensive new book. Biocontrol of Oilseed Rape Pests commences with a reviewof the oilseed rape crop, followed by chapters on pests, pestmanagement strategies and parasitoids of specific pests or groupsof pests. Detailed information is also included on sampling, trapping and rearing pests, their parasitoids and predators; theidentification of hymenopterous parasitoids; pathogens of oilseedrape pests, predators, predator taxonomy and identification, andthe impact of on-farm landscape structures and systems onpredators. This book is an essential purchase for all those involved withoilseed rape and for anyone with an interest in agriculturalbiocontrol strategies. It is also essential reading and aninvaluable source of reference for agricultural scientists, entomologists, crop protection specialists, advisers andconsultants. All agrochemical companies should have multiple copiesof this book on their shelves, as should all libraries inuniversities and research establishments where biological andagricultural sciences are studied and taught. Dr David V. Alford, based in Cambridge, UK, has manyyears of experience working as a government entomologist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to document and illustrate the major developments in the use of nematodes for biological control of insects and slugs. It has three major sections covering entomopathogenic nematodes, entomophilic nematodes, and slug-parasitic nematodes. Each of these sections dicusses biology, commercial production, formulation and quality control, application technology, strategy and safety. Separate chapters are devoted to the application of nematodes in different cropping systems, and the efficacy of nematodes against specific pests. Potential of predatory nematodes to control plant-parasitic nematodes and mycophagous nematodes to control fungal pathogens is also reviewed. This book was first published as a hardback in 2005. Now new in paperback.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supplement comes not only to correct the inaccuracies and mistakes in the authors monograph of 1997, but also to update the nomenclature, taxonomy and distribution of the Alticinae, or flea beetles, in the Palaearctic subregion. As a result, 83 names of flea beetles are eliminated, mostly as synonyms, while 113 species are added. So the total number of species or subspecies has increased from 1,358 to 1,388. The following three genera are added to the regional list: Aeschrocnemis, Cyrsylus and Heyrovskya. Blagoi Gruev, born 1936, is a lecturer of general biogeography at the University of Plovdiv, the author of the first textbook on this subject in Bulgaria, who also provided an original biogeographical division of the country. He has described 64 new taxa of Chrysomelidae from various parts of the Palaearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical realms. Manfred Doberl, born 1933, has devoted 40 years of his life to teaching and entomology. He has also described numerous new Palaearctic and Oriental flea beetles, published in more than 30 papers.
