Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eclipses, Past and Future: With General Hints for Observing the Heavens It was originally my intention to bring out two works; one, a description of eclipses, past and future; the other, a cycle of celestial objects coming within the range of a 4-inch telescope, such an instrument being common with amateurs, and a very useful size, large enough to shew what is worth examining, and not too large to prevent portability. On after thoughts, my plan was to abridge both works, and publish them under the title of "Eclipses, Past and Future; with General Hints for Observing the Heavens." With the solar eclipse of 1870 a considerable interest was kindled as to such phenomena, not a little correspondence passed on the subject in the scientific journals, and there were several inquiries about the next solar eclipse that would be total in this country. This led to certain communications to the "Times" by Mr. Hind in 1871 and 1872. In the first part of the following little work, notices of the eclipses are collected from the earliest days to the present time. A selection may be made from them by those who wish to compute from the tables of Leverrier and Hansen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Stargazers who may have missed the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century this past summer have just been given another chance to observe this "once in a lifetime" occurrence. Inside Glorious Eclipses they will find startling images and rich personal accounts that fully capture this event and other recent eclipses. The book will also insure that readers will not miss another eclipse in the next 60 years! Specially designed in a beautiful, large format, the volume portrays eclipses of all kinds--lunar, solar, and those occurring elsewhere in the Solar System and beyond. Brunier and Luminet have gathered together all aspects of eclipses, and carefully selected a host of lavish images. The authors detail the history of eclipses, the celestial mechanics involved, their observation, and scientific interest. Personal accounts of recent eclipses are also included as well as all relevant information about forthcoming eclipses up to 2060. Complete with NASA maps and data, Glorious Eclipses is the ultimate source for all those interested in these remarkable (and rare) celestial events. Serge Brunier is chief editor of the journal Ciel et Espace, a photo-journalist, and the author of many nonfiction books aimed at both specialists and the general public. Jean-Pierre Luminet is an astrophysicist at the Paris-Meudon Observatory and director of research at the Centre pour la Recherche Scientifique. He is the author of many popular astronomy books, including Black Holes (Cambridge University Press, 1992).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eclipses, Past and Future: With General Hints for Observing the Heavens It Iias been ascertained, that if the latitude of the moon be less than 1 23' at the time of new moon, there will be an eclipse of the sun; and, if less than 51' 57 at the time of full moon, there will be an eclipse of the moon. There cannot be less than two eclipses in any year, or more than seven; and we are unable to mention any year in which this maximum number was attained. We suppose the reader to be acquainted, more or less, with the theory of eclipses. It is not our design to enter here into a description of the periodical equations and secular equations of the moon's motions, simply to give a brief description of eclipses on record in ancient and medieeval times, as such may prove of use to some for purposes of reference. Book excerpt: Eclipses have long been seen as important celestial phenomena, whether as omens affecting the future of kingdoms, or as useful astronomical events to help in deriving essential parameters for theories of the motion of the moon and sun. This is the first book to collect together all presently known records of timed eclipse observations and predictions from antiquity to the time of the invention of the telescope. In addition to cataloguing and assessing the accuracy of the various records, which come from regions as diverse as Ancient Mesopotamia, China, and Europe, the sources in which they are found are described in detail. Related questions such as what type of clocks were used to time the observations, how the eclipse predictions were made, and how these prediction schemes were derived from the available observations are also considered. The results of this investigation have important consequences for how we understand the relationship between observation and theory in early science and the role of astronomy in early cultures, and will be of interest to historians of science, astronomers, and ancient and medieval historians.

Book excerpt: The Atlas of Solar Eclipses - 2020 to 2045 is an adventure guide for eclipse chasers traveling the world in search of nature's most stupendous sight, a total eclipse of the Sun. The atlas covers every type of solar eclipse around the world - total, annular, and partial - with overview, regional, and detail maps. Emphasis is given to total solar eclipses in heavily populated areas, such as the 2024 April 8 eclipse across North America, the 2027 August 2 eclipse over Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and the 2045 August 12 eclipse crossing North and South America. The maps are designed to give the reader important information for choosing optimal locations for viewing total and annular solar eclipses, along with explanations of the types of solar eclipses and the phenomena an eclipse viewer will see. Accompanying text gives details of circumstances such as the time of day, sky altitude of eclipse, special situations, viewing advice, and points of interest along the path of each eclipse. The atlas is richly illustrated and developed in an easy-to-understand style and includes summary world maps of every solar eclipse from 1901 to 2100.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 5,000-year period from -1999 to +3000 (2000 BCE to 3000 CE), Earth will experience 11,898 eclipses of the Sun. The eclipses are distributed as follows: 4200 partial eclipses, 3956 annular eclipses, 3173 total eclipses, and 569 hybrid eclipses. The "Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses: -1999 to +3000" contains an individual global map for each eclipse delineating the geographic regions of visibility for both the partial and central (total, annular, or hybrid) phases. Modern political borders are plotted to assist in the determination of eclipse visibility. The uncertainty in Earth's rotational period expressed in delta T and its impact on the geographic visibility of eclipses in the past and future is discussed. The statistics of the solar eclipse distribution over 5,000 years are discussed in detail. This includes eclipse types by month and by century, eclipse frequency in the calendar year, extremes in eclipse magnitude for all eclipse types, maximum durations of total, annular, and hybrid eclipses, and eclipse duos (two eclipses within 30 days of each other). Finally, the periodicity of solar eclipses is investigated with particular attention to the Saros cycle. Tables list the start and end dates, number, and type of eclipses of every Saros series in progress during the 5,000-year period covered by the Five Millennium Canon.

Book excerpt: This book is intended for geophysicists, astronomers (especially those with an interest in history), historians and orientalists. The culmination of many years of research, it discusses, in depth, ancient and medieval eclipse observations and their importance in studying Earth's past rotation. This was the first major book on this subject to appear in the last twenty years. The author has specialised in the interpretation of early astronomical records and their application to problems in modern astronomy for many years. The book contains an in-depth discussion of numerous eclipse records from Babylon, China, Europe and the Arab lands. Translations of almost every record studied are given. It is shown that although tides play a dominant long-term role in producing variations in Earth's rate of rotation - causing a gradual increase in the length of the day - there are significant, and variable non-tidal changes in opposition to the main trend.

Book excerpt: What do Emily Dickinson, slave revolts, Babylonian Kings, and Monticello all have in common? A solar eclipse. Whether it was deciding on the location of a grand home (or castle), inspiring poetry, timing battles and revolts, or planning expeditions, eclipses have inspired fear and fascination. Solar eclipses allowed Ptolemy to determine the length of the Mediterranean and helped Einstein establish his General Theory of Relativity. Preliterate societies recorded eclipses on turtle shells found in "The Wastes of Yin" and on the Mayan "Dresden Codex." Eclipses were later instrumental in the creation of longitude and allowed Hubble to understand the expansion of the Universe (and disprove another theory of Einstein's in the process). John Dvorak, the acclaimed author of Earthquake Storms and The Last Volcano, examines this amazing phenomena and reveals the humanism behind the science. With insightful detail and vividly accessible prose, he provides explanations as to how and why eclipses occur—as well as insight into the eclipse of 2017, which was visible across North America.
