Book excerpt: This volume contains two closely related studies: Echoes of the Shema and Our Father’s Footprints. The term Shema is derived from the initial word to hear in the Old Testament: “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deut. 6:4). Hence, God is deserving of ardent adoration and unqualified commitment. Morris A. Inch discusses God as Spirit, Light, and Love and also touches on divine holiness, grace, and compassion. The second study picks up with Jesus’ allusion to God as our Father (Matt. 6:9). While this reference is primarily related to his authority, Jesus pointedly ties in his benevolent character. In this regard, he exclaims: “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matt. 7:11). This quotation invites us to reflect on such associated themes as God’s faithfulness, generosity, resolve, forgiveness, and creativity. Echoes of the Shema and Our Father’s Footprints will be a useful text for those interested in exploring the inviting realm of biblical theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of “going to heaven” is more a matter of tradition than sound biblical interpretation. Often referenced to support the notion of a heavenly afterlife, John 14 is a staple of Christian funerals. The promise of “many rooms” in the “Father’s house” is typically interpreted as Jesus’ assurance that he will return to usher believers into “heaven.” However, John 14 has much more to say about how we live than what happens when we die. A closer look at John 14 in the broader context of the Gospel reveals that “the Father’s house” is not a designation for heaven, but a reference to God’s household of faith. In his going away and coming again, Jesus doesn’t transport his followers to “heaven,” but rather prepares the way into the presence of God by going to the cross. As Christ walks in cruciform obedience, he models a new way of walking with God, a new halakah based on intimate, relational faith. By following the halakah of Jesus, through the power of the Spirit-Paraclete, believers are equipped to carry out God’s will upon the earth and spread his redemptive mission throughout creation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ebook download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by reexamining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We'll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands. Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today? In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we'll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we'll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi's teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving and revealing exploration of ultra-Orthodox Judaism and one man's loss of faith Shulem Deen was raised to believe that questions are dangerous. As a member of the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the US, he knows little about the outside world—only that it is to be shunned. His marriage at eighteen is arranged and several children soon follow. Deen's first transgression—turning on the radio—is small, but his curiosity leads him to the library, and later the Internet. Soon he begins a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs, until, several years later, his faith unravels entirely. Now a heretic, he fears being discovered and ostracized from the only world he knows. His relationship with his family at stake, he is forced into a life of deception, and begins a long struggle to hold on to those he loves most: his five children. In All Who Go Do Not Return, Deen bravely traces his harrowing loss of faith, while offering an illuminating look at a highly secretive world.
