Book Synopsis Echoes from the Prairie by : Sylvia Eliina Hutonen Mackey
Download or read book Echoes from the Prairie written by Sylvia Eliina Hutonen Mackey and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I loved the tumbleweeds that rolled free in the wind for miles, the wild geese, the red-winged blackbirds, the meadowlarks & their song, the flowers that dotted the earth & my faithful horse Queenie. I loved to hear the howling of the coyotes. Their lonely cries told me to be grateful for the security of our little house with my family around me. I loved the free nature of life without bonds or price. If only it could be so." In a book destined to touch many hearts, Sylvia Mackey tells a warm & poignant story of growing up in the Dakotas in the challenging 1920s. With Willa Cather-like simplicity, she paints an extraordinary picture of rural America during the last years of its pioneer farming era & portrays the figures in her book larger than life-honest, simple, courageous people whose long shadows help us measure our own stature today. Her words provide renewal of the inspiration we all take from the simple life we have turned our backs on, yet yearn for deep in our hearts. Sylvia Mackey shares her joys & laughter, the good times & the bad in a book written for all of us who wish to know "the way it was" & to seek in the strengths of the past an affirmation of the future. ECHOES FROM THE PRAIRIE is a book worth cherishing. Don't miss this one.

Book excerpt: Jack Chatwin has visions, which leave tangible evidence - sounds and smells, which linger afterwards. What he sees are two primitive figures, with painted faces - Greyface and Greenface, a brother and sister. He calls them bullrunners. John Garth is a city dowser, searching for the mythical pre-Roman city of Glanum. He hopes to find an entryway to the elusive city beneath Exburgh, Jack's home town. And he thinks Jack's bullrunners may be connected to Glanum . . . Years later, Jack, now grown up, agrees to take part in experiments to investigate his bullrunners - until Greyface, the male, breaks free of Jack and takes corporeal form. The bullrunner kidnaps Jack's young daughter so Jack will force Greenface to follow her brother-husband, even against her own wishes. Though Greyface returns the daughter, he keeps a shadow of her, which takes on a life of its own. If Jack refuses to co-operate, the shadow will drain his daughter's vitality and personality - and her very future. The story of Jack's search for Greenface is interwoven with the connections between the bullrunners and the mystical city of Glanum in this resonant tale of ancient mythic wonder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of the Great Catastrophe: Re-sounding Anatolian Greekness in Diaspora explores the legacy of the Great Catastrophe—the death and expulsion from Turkey of 1.5 million Greek Christians following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922—through the music and dance practices of Greek refugees and their descendants over the last one hundred years. The book draws extensively on original ethnographic research conducted in Greece (on the island of Lesvos in particular) and in the Greater Boston area, as well as on the author’s lifetime immersion in the North American Greek diaspora. Through analysis of handwritten music manuscripts, homemade audio recordings, and contemporary live performances, the book traces the routes of repertoire and style over generations and back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, investigating the ways that the particular musical traditions of the Anatolian Greek community have contributed to their understanding of their place in the global Greek diaspora and the wider post-Ottoman world. Alternating between fine-grained musicological analysis and engaging narrative prose, it fills a lacuna in scholarship on the transnational Greek experience.
