Book excerpt: An exploration of echo not as simple repetition but as an agent of creative possibilities. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Amit Pinchevski proposes that echo is not simple repetition and the reproduction of sameness but an agent of change and a source of creation and creativity. Pinchevski views echo as a medium, connecting and mediating across and between disparate domains. He reminds us that the mythological Echo, sentenced by Juno to repeat the last words of others, found a way to make repetition expressive. So too does echo introduce variation into sameness, mediating between self and other, inside and outside, known and unknown, near and far. Echo has the potential to bring back something unexpected, either more or less than what was sent. Pinchevski distinguishes echo from the closely related but sometimes conflated reflection, reverberation, and resonance; considers echolalia as an active, reactive, and creative vocalic force, the launching pad of speech; and explores echo as a rhetorical device, steering between appropriation and response while always maintaining relation. He examines the trope of echo chamber and both destructive and constructive echoing; describes various echo techniques and how echo can serve practical purposes from echolocation in bats and submarines to architecture and sound recording; explores echo as a link to the past, both literally and metaphorically; and considers echo as medium using Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad.

Book excerpt: Ten years ago the Iran-Contra affair swept the headlines as the nation watched an indignant Lt. Col. Oliver North testify before a congressional committee. Although polls showed that most Americans were critical of North's actions and ambivalent toward the man himself, media coverage left the opposite impression, with its broadcasts of "Ollie-for-president" rallies and stories of congressional aides overwhelmed by a torrent of pro-North mail. In this book, public opinion is more than the sum of a pollster's tally; instead, Amy Fried defines it as a political tool, integral to the political process, where vested interests compete to legitimize their interpretation of the public voice. Fried explores the construction, interpretation, and uses of public opinion, raising important questions about the media and the role of special interest groups in determining policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media has fundamentally transformed political life, driving a surge in far-right extremism. In recent years, radical anti-democratic ideologies have entered into the political mainstream, fueled by energy from extreme online environments. But why do far-right extremist movements seem to thrive so well on social media platforms? What takes place within the fringe online spaces that seem to function as incubators for violent extremists? To answer these questions, this book goes inside the “murder capital of the racist Internet”, examining 20 years of conversations on Stormfront.org. Using a combination of computational text analysis and close reading, we seek a deeper understanding of the emotional and social effects of being part of an extremist community. We lay the foundation of a new way of understanding online extremism, building on the tradition of Émile Durkheim and Randall Collins. We find that online radicalization is not merely an effect of repeated one-sided arguments, as suggested by metaphors such as “echo chambers”. Instead, social media politics can be better understood through Durkheim’s concept of rituals: moments of shared attention and emotion that create emotional energy and a sense of intersubjectivity, weaving from participants a political tribe – united, energized, and poised to act.

Book excerpt: Dive into the pages of 'Echoes of Authenticity: Rediscovering Your True Self,' where I share a compelling narrative that transcends the boundaries of self-help literature. In this transformative journey, authenticity takes center stage as I navigate the complexities of life, inviting readers to embark on their own odyssey of self-discovery. The narrative unfolds with my restless echo, a universal sentiment many can relate to—a yearning for deeper meaning and connection. When I stumble upon a revolutionary approach to life, skepticism and curiosity intertwine, laying the foundation for a journey that transcends conventional self-help paradigms. As the story progresses, readers are invited into a Whispers Workshop, an immersive experience designed to help participants connect with their inner voices. Key concepts come to life, providing practical insights for articulating suppressed desires and embracing vulnerability as a gateway to authenticity. Reflecting on pivotal moments at the crossroads of my life, I unveil the stories of a reclusive artist and a corporate rebel, each offering profound lessons on embracing authenticity. The narrative beautifully weaves together these diverse perspectives, creating a rich tapestry of human experiences. Chapter by chapter, I confront and articulate suppressed desires without apologies, unraveling the liberating power of self-acceptance. The exploration of vulnerability emerges as a central theme, inviting readers to embrace the dance between courage and fear, unlocking the transformative potential inherent in moments of raw honesty. The book introduces a cast of characters who, inspired by my journey, embark on their own quests for authenticity. From an unapologetic pursuit of aspirations to the nurturing of authentic connections, each chapter serves as a guide for those seeking to break free from societal expectations and listen to the whispers of their authentic selves. In the closing chapters, I reflect on the enduring impact of authenticity, encouraging readers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery. "Echoes of Authenticity" is not just a book; it's an invitation to celebrate imperfections, embrace vulnerability, and participate in the beautifully messy dance of authenticity—a dance that resonates far beyond the pages, leaving lasting echoes in the hearts of its readers.
